my friend and i cant figure out why, but for some reason he cannot connect to me when i host a game, but i can connect to him

he is using dialup, i have dsl, with a router.
i forwarded ports 2302 and 2303 in both udp and tcp, and i have 2302 and 2303 forwarded in zonealarm pro, in exactly the same way as my friend. but, for some reason, he cannot connect to me, but i can connect to him. i have my router's firewall off.

also, whenever my friend tries to join my game, zonealarm doesnt log it, meaning that the connection was never made.

i know that it is possible to host a game behind a router, so i would like any help i can get

EDIT:

we were trying to join over direct ip, if that makes a difference. he did get a ping response from my router, so he can connect to it, but for some reason it wont connect to my game

You need to dot he same in your software. Under network connections, right click the connection -> properties -> advanced -> settings -> advanced -> exceptions

And forward ports there with your software, otherwise the firewall windows has will not let a signal through.

as far as a routing device, i find it easier to disable firewall, seeing as how i don't exactly open random emails and downloads when i'm LAN-ed.
not like the firewall does much to a resolute hacker. Or keep stupid people from pr0nning a virus onto their comp.
i play too many online games at too many lans to ƒ*** with the options...

i have my zonealarm set to disable the windows firewall, but i will experiment with that.

EDIT:

the windows firewall is off completely. it shouldnt do anything

ok, so i tried tweaking the options in my forwarded ports in my router... messed with zonealarm, made sure windows firewall was off... made sure router's firewall was off... no success....

anyone got any ideas?

P.S. is this considered a double post if they are hours apart?

i dont mean to bump in a dumb way or anything, its just i am stumped, and i KNOW some people out there can host servers from behind a router.

and i did try something else. i had a different friend using dsl try to connect, he said he could see my game in the lobby, but whenever he tried to connect, it would retry like idk how many times and then say couldnt connect. so... i have no idea....

i will post my router's port forwarding config here so people can tell me if i did something wrong

Port 1
Protocol: TCP
Global Port(s): 2300-2305
Base Host Port: 2300

Port 2
Protocol: UDP
Global Port(s): 2300-2305
Base Host Port: 2300

i wasnt sure if it was tcp or udp, so i did both... shouldnt make a difference.
i am pretty sure it is udp

in zonealarm i made rules for halo to allow traffic:
source:any, destination: 2302 tcp&udp
source:any, destination: 2303 tcp&udp
source: 2302 tcp&udp, destination: any
source: 2303 tcp&udp, destination: any

once again i did tcp&udp because i am not positive which it is

so i am almost positive i did the port forwarding right. I think if anything is wrong, it is the base host port setting...not sure what it is.

i have the router's firewall off, once again

anyone have any ideas?? its starting to bug me that i cant host games

EDIT: the ports forwarded in my router are set to forward to my computer's ip

SECOND EDIT: got it to work. was error on my part with zonealarm. can even host game with firewall on
