I voted marathon, however there is a problem with that... at this current time, I don't think it would be the most sought after game, Halo has created a big fuss... Halflife 2 is coming out... theres a load of big name games coming out... what do they all have in common? action, almost ceaseless action... aswell as superb graphics, brilliant cutscenes, etc... all creating a very fluid game. marathon is not what I would call a fluid game... its a bit of a stop and start at times with the computer terminals, and thats not what the target audience wants.
This could be overcome with a Halo style AI, one who talks to you and pops up every now and then for some eyecandy, but that would take away from the effect that marathon had... I have a voice in my head for each of the AI's and someone else making a voice for them would spoil it :P, and when you are being talked to directly, there tends to be need for a NAME, which also spoils many of the features of marathon.
Plus there are limitless tides of Halo fans who are completely oblivious to the slendour that is marathon, and would simply cry "rip-off" if it came out with anything remotely Halo-ish... and bungie would probably loose some of their fanbase who would be appalled at voeruse and re-use of ideas.
So while I think it would be the greatest thing... theres more on their minds than a minority of hardcore gamers, even with the current increase of marathon players, its still not enough to turn the tides so to speak.
But then... take another look around... theres games like Prince of Persia; Sands of Times out... and soon to be the unappropriately named "Prince of Persia 2" (actually the 5th PoP game to date)... the former, took a great step forward on the original game, enhanced the story line, etc... and made a great new game whilst still being loyal to its fanbase (ie me ;-) ) so it is possible to redo games and have a positive reaction... but theres alot of things you need to change, and some of those things might spoil it's maratrhon-ness...
Wow... I do ramble a bit these days...
