When I say serious performance issues, I mean the game is basically un-playable and suffers from the following symptoms:

1) Network stuttering . I'll be playing fine when I first join a game, I'll be walking along, minding my own business...then my screen will freeze for about 3-4 seconds, I get that little grey computer icon flashing in the bottom right hand corner, and I die. And this happens repeatedly once every 20 seconds.

2) Framerate issues . Whether I play on full-res or on the absolute lowest settings--it doesn't seem to make a difference. When I first join a server, I'll get 100-200 FPS. Then...for some reason....everything slows down. My frame rate dips to 20....then to 15. Sometimes it'll go back to 30 if I look at the sky, but will dip into 10-15 when I look down at the grass.

I think I have a pretty good computer and other graphics-intensive games run fine.

My Computer
Intel Quad Core (Q8200) @ 2.33Ghz
6.0 GB of RAM
Nvidia GeForce 9800 GT
64-bit Vista Home Premium; Service Pack 1.

Can you help me please? I have no idea what is causing these problems.

Yes, I am a hypocrite, and I'm sorry. I really do mean well, but I'm not running on all cylinders.

Everytime someone buys a copy of Halo 2 Vista, a puppy dies.

Turn off decals in video options.

To be clear to all reviewers: I'm talking about Halo: Combat Evolved.

I'm thinking about switching back to XP since I have the XP disc from my old computer. But this guy at Fry's told me that I should be careful if I decide to re-format my hard drive and install XP, because he said that Vista is somehow hard-wired into my BIOS, and that I would be screwed since my computer didn't come with a Vista disk.

Is there any truth to this?

And I tried running the game on the lowest resolution with ALL graphic and sound settings set to the lowest or off setting. I still get the same kind of lag.

Do what n357 said, turn of decals.

As for internet lag, halo has a horrible netcode. Google for something called "Vista anti-lag", vista refreshes networks to get new ones, so this will lag games even MORE.

No. What he probably meant to say was that your drive contains a hidden partition or file/folder that contains an image of Vista/your PC with factory defaults. Doing a full format will wipe this clean and you won't be able to install Vista again without a full disc. The serial key is probably on the back of your PC though, so it's not a big deal I'd imagine. Could back it up though if you find it.

Kindly refrain from Frog-Blasting my Ventcore.

I have heard that having a really good processor will slow older games down, but I don't know for sure if it's true.

Halo CE forever!

Yeah, people with new hardware like quadcore processors, DX10 graphics cards and 64-bit operating systems get the most troubles with Halo CE :(

That's the number of bans in this thread. Next time you want to derail something, go stand in front of a train.

From what i know, it doesn't work well with 64 Bit operating systems.

In the clan i am in, we got an ally post asking about this, it turns out he has got Vista 64 Bit, trying it in compatability mode will not do anything, as it will do it still in 64 Bit.

I have a q9450, 8800 gtx, 8 gb of ram, and 64 bit vista business edition and halo runs flawlessly at hundreds of FPS constantly. 64bit vista isnt the issue.
