If your 360 dash says connected and says Gold, then look in the pinned topic to the right. If your dash says disconnected, you've gotta look on your end first.

Log into XBL on your dashboard first, then try it on Halo 2.

Video games are my favourite video games.

Go into system settings on your dashboard, make sure you're able to play Original Xbox games over XBL. Happened to me when I first played Halo 2 on 360.

I'm 23, I have a house, dog, girlfriend, job and I have no interest in any fanboyism so if you're thinking about sending me a childish PM, don't be surprised when I don't call back.

Good point, as well as all of the basic network troubleshooting you should make sure your 360 authorises xbox originals.

In addition to the above referencing your xbox connectivity, it is also important to check your family settings. New systems come pre-registered with information banning accounts from playing original Xbox titles. Therefore, you should check your settings to ensure that everything is enabled, provided a parent isnt attempting to restrict you from any content and that you are of age.

Although, lets face it, few parents restrict their children on live with the xbox parental settings and the majority of kids know how to alter the settings. It is something you may have to double check however.
