I know this is proboly coming a little late in the game (no pun intended), but would it be cool if... And I say that on behalf of my wife. I myself am you atypical gamer: 30 years old, in a career and when asked if I have any kids, I reply with "My wife says we have one... me.". I have been playing games nearly all my life and whe I met my wife, I have known no other joy than gaming with her.
She falls into that that rare breed of gamer we call that "Hardcore" gamer. Now, of course she likes thinkgs like Tetris (kapow) and Mario (whistling drop, thud), but she also enjoys taking me to school in Unreal Tournament and of course, Halo. Recently, we just got into the remake of Diablo: Dungeons and Dragons: Heroes. (Albeit, a much better Diablo, props to them). but while we were selecting characters for it, she tended towards the female characters, the Rogue and the Wizard. What she really wanted was to be the fighter, but the fighter was, well, male. And for some reason, I was taken back about ayear when I intorduced her to Halo. The first question from her, after color selection was, "Can I change my skin to a female?!" she asked with excited glee. Then it dawned on me.
Woman are quickly becoming more and more entrenched in the gaming community and their potential for revenue is staggering, as they make up most of the shopping populace. And, let's face it, guys, we have to ask them to make any real purchases, especially when it comes to video games. I began asking her questions on whats makes her play a particular game, or choose to. She responded with these two answers:
1) Gameplay
2) Looks
2 very generic answers that any gamer would say. I investigated further. I focused on the looks department. Eventually, she came right out and said, "Yes, if I could select a female skin, I would be more willing to try a game.". What an astounding revelation! And all because she had the option of selecting a female skin. It would be neat, especially for XBox live, knowing you just got pwned by a c4ik. I also believe it would make games, like Halo, a little more accessible to casual gamers who see it as a male dominated game.
And trust me when I say that it makes buying much easier when we can both enjoy them.
