There are several things I would try in this instance.
1.) Clear your Hard drive's memory cache. I can't recall the button combination needed to do this, however it will allow you to re-download the updates needed to games on live.
I personally would delete your current Halo 2 saved files,I respectfully disagree, emphatically. Get the 3 or 12 month, delete Map Packs, clear cache (Y at HDD page, then XX, LB, RB, XX), update, redown and try it to see if you can get on. The skull saves are important so don't delete them unless it still doesn't work after trying what I said above. I've got saves from day 1 and I wouldn't want to lose them.
There's just no reason for the server to communicate with saves. Those are for Campaign only and the server would have no reason to examine them. The server reads the cache and grabs your Map Packs.
He already solved the problem; not to mention I merely mentioned the saved files since it is possible they could have been corrupted and I am asuming he wouldnt care about campaign saves. The only things would be character profiles, which are attached to gamertags. I would think that could cause issues...but perhaps not. That was merely my quick thinking on the subject.
Honestly though, the map packs would have been a good thing to delete because Bungie did ultimately have to have us reinstall the last map pack due to an error on them. Furthermore, I have heard of issues being resolved by their deletion and then subsequent reinstatement on the hard drive.
