it was just something bungie put together for the show. it was never meant to be in the game

AHHH wrong...according to the halo 2 limited edition dvd, it was a part of an ideal level they were going to implement into the game. But, due to the time and the choices they made for the story, the mombasa level couldn't fit with the storyline they were making. It would of been awesome to play tho. Hope ODST brings the feeling back.
Not only that, but there was a lot changed from what I have gauged in seeing the LE DVD, and in reading all the Weekly Updates.

The biggest problem I have with the removal of this level are all the events that take place. The trailer had certain things like Longswords flying overhead, that plasma cannon that actually did something, the new Jackal shields, hell, even the fact that the ODST's actually had a unique property to them, rather than just feeling like marines with a different skin. That patio was a nifty place to shoot from, the ride through the city was pretty cool, but the best part I feel was what they actually portrayed Earth to be like in 2552.

The city had certainly evolved into something substantially awe-inspiring. The stacking levels, the gigantic structures, the architecture, there was just so much to it. I was so looking forward to exploring the level, looking at all the set pieces that had been designed. It's such a shame that it all had to go to waste; I don't know if the statement 'The grass is always greener on the other side' applies to this, but the New Mombasa we ended up with was just not interesting at all.

I don't know if it's just my eyes playing tricks on me or if this does happen to be an interesting easter egg, but if you look into the blinking red signs (I think they're warning signs for the bridge) at the beginning of Metropolis, you can see the old version of the city being reflected.

Not to mention the music; why is it that every unique-sounding segment from every pre-release video for Halo 2 and 3 goes missing in the retail versions? :(

Very nice!!! I give you big props...didn't even think of that.

Wow, that was an epic post.

Anyway, the music used in the trailer did make it into the games.

It is possible to commit no errors and still lose. That is not a weakness. That is life.

Cheeto is the only one among you that doesn't suck.

Personally, all I want from that level is the single shot battle rifle.

Doesn't Halo 2 have one? I thought if you use the scope, it fires single shots?

Bungie is the best.

Simple as that.

I remember the old vids too. I was so excited about Halo2... :)

Yeah me too! I couldn't wait! :P

Negative, it might as well though, BR in H2 was far too accurate lol. 4 shots used to be pretty common, now a lot of people are in luck if they can 6 shot someone.

About this level - I wouldn't be too surprised to see something related to this in ODST. Not exactly like the E3 trailer for Halo 2, but similar, especially since the game is essentially about New Mombasa. There will likely be much more time spent in the city than in Halo 2 so who knows what we'll find.

EDIT: Forgot to mention, no Metropolis = no Scarab gun & soccer ball = no fun!!!

Yes, the music most certainly did, but certain segments from the songs didn't; re-watch the announcement trailer for Halo 2, and when the chief walks out of the elevator, there's a part that plays that's cut out in the retail version. Instead it skips to the following part when the chief jumps out with the bomb.

In the campaign E3 video, when the pelican flies through a bunch of mid-air plasma explosions and then lands, another piece plays that is stripped from the retail version.

Then there's the fanfare in the Halo 3 announcement trailer that can only be heard on the soundtrack.

Yeah, you're right, but I think those two Halo 2 pieces made it to the soundtrack. They probably couldn't find a place for them in the game. The song that plays in the campaign E3 video wouldn't fit with what was happening in the game.

And the Halo 3 announcement song probably wouldn't have fit either because the intoduction part was too long and we we're not still watching the chief emerge form the desert. So they had to shorten it for the cutscene.

I'm not saying they should be in the game, I'm merely stating that my favourite 2-3 segment sections of these pieces always go missing in the retail versions.

E4web

With audience reactions.

As a side note:

Bungie script everything on location; so all that was done at E3. Not the level design, just the programming. It's a shame they didn't carry the mixing reticules over into the final game (can be seen when player uses dual smgs).

I LOVE that vid! The first time I watched it, I somehow ended up making the same reactions as the audience, but more towards their reaction than what was happening on screen.

Yup that's why it was so much harder after E3 because they essentially had nothing to work with after finishing that one simple demo. I too wish they kept the mixed reticles when carrying the same two weapons.

That level was a simple run-through with which Bungie could display the new game without the chance of a ton of variables and an extended run time. Everyone was watching them play through the level, so they created that level like a straight foreward road with certain events that would trigger as the player moved along it.

It wasn't really like a preset video, but it was close. The player (bungie staff member, I think it was Jason) could run through it over and over and have similair results, yet still show the public the new features and impress them with key things, like boarding, dual weilding, and beating down a brute, and being charged by one.

It was a DEMO.

I remember watching that video so many times so that I was ready for that specific level, sadly I never got three diffrent melees, 1 shot BR, and the stun grenade but Halo 2 was still a great game.

Although the level was fun to watch, you still have to remember that they were behind in development at that show (I was also dissapointed with the Battle Rifle).
