I was checking out the multiplayer maps a few days ago, and in the middle of an Oddball match, I decided to see if there were any markings on the skull. I looked straight up and threw it, and noticed something on the back of the skull. I can't tell what it is, since it's only on the screen for a few frames, but if someone else could capture a still of it, we might be able to determine what it is.

It's called "bone". If you look carefully, you can see that it's all over the skull. Almost as if the skull is made of bone.

I'm serious. It was a blue/green marking on the back of the skull. If you take the time to examine it, you'll realize that there is no way to actually view the skull from that angle with it in a stationary position. The only way that I know of to see the marking is to look directly up and pull the right trigger while it is in your hands. It will toss the skull up into the air a bit, and should give you a good view of the marking on the back for a brief moment.

The Skull itself is from Halo's early development: when you go rescue Captain Keyes in the level Keyes and discover that he has been consumed by the Flood, the Master Chief was to burn through the Proto-Gravemind biomass and pull out Keyes' skull to get his neural implants. This was cut due to the Flamethrower being removed. The design of the skull was apparently kept for the Oddball skull, as a Command Neural Interface resembling that of Captain Keyes, can be seen on the base of the skull.
