Subject: Why is Lord Hood confused over small battle group attacking Earth?

In Halo: First Strike the Master Chief along with a few other SPARTANS takes out the Unyielding Heirophant, destroying most of the battle group that was on a course for Earth.

That's why only 15 show up with Regret when he gets there.

But why is Lord Hood so confused in the opening scene when they arrive in such small numbers? Wouldn't Master Chief have mentioned the greatest UNSC space victory EVER to Lord Hood?

Is there an explanation?

Because he thought the Covenant wouldn't be stupid enough to attack humanity's biggest stronghold with only 15 ships.

The Chief forgot to mention it.

The Covenant didn't know that Earth even had any humans on it.

And yeah, obviously a plot discrepancy here.

No, it's not a disrepancy!

Cortana told Hood that the Spartans had destroyed the Covenant fleet of 500 ships and only a dozen survived. Hood was sure that they wouldn't continue to attack Earth; it would be suicide.

However, they attacked Earth anyway. That was because something was wrong: the Covenant didn't even know Earth had any humans, they had come there for the Ark.

R.I.P. Halo 2

Did you even listen to what he says after that? He says something like "the fleet that destroyed Reach was 50 times this size."

Um, where is the plot hole? The Covenant didn't know there were humans there, that's why the fleet is small.

Check out the Postgame Carnage Report! The uncensored, NSFW Halo fan podcast!

The covies had shoddy intel with respect to Earth. That and Regret attacked prematurely, instead of building up a sufficient armada to demolish UNSC orbital defenses.

If you play through the Delta Halo, and Regret levels Cortana will shed some light on this. (specifically her dialogue when you are in the underwater elevators.

You're missing the point.

Why was Lord Hood surprised when the Covenant armada was so small?

He says something along the lines of "Only 15 ships? It was supposed to be 50 times that size."

So obviously Master Chief must've forgotten to mention it. - THERES THE PROBLEM

"Bungie controls everything. You have no rights. Play nice."

For the last time its TURRETS not TORRENTS. A TORRENT is either a peer to peer file sharing protocol or a violently fast stream of water. A TURRET is a self-contained weapons platform housing guns and capable of rotation. And TURRENT isn't even a word.

He actually notes that the fleet that destroyed Reach was 50 teams that size. Hood thought that the Covenant had discovered the human home world (and knew what it was). The Covenant actually thought it was just another planet. Hood expected that if the Covenant knew that Earth was the human homeworld, they would have met up with another fleet and brought more than 15 ships. Instead of gathering more ships after their original fleet was destroyed, they headed straight for earth instead of getting reinforcements. This is what surprised Hood.

Cortana also has something to say on why the Covenant came as they did.

"I've been analyzing the Covenant tactical chatter. They're surprised, confused... I don't think they expected us to be here. Not... you and me...all of us... humanity, on Earth. Odd, I know, but it does help explain why they came here with such a small fleet.

Plus the fact that Bungie doesnt technically use the books as cannon for the games

Bungie is the best.

Simple as that.

right, the books are based on the games, not the other way around.

May 11 will be known as Halo 2 Day for me from now on.

Well Ive been in the Navy since June 25, 2009 and its a fun job right now.

The book doesnt always go with the games so there will be some differences. Also the Covenant probably thought that since they destroyed so many more planets they probably thought we were almost done for until they saw Earth they were like "oh s*$@"

  • 02.27.2009 1:39 PM PDT

No, no, no!

He says something along the lines of "The fleet that destroyed Reach was 50 times this size. They lost hundreds of ships there. We blew up their 500 ship fleet they had gathered because they were preparing for even more resistance here. Why the heck would they continue to attack us if they knew it would be suicide?"

But they didn't know there would be any resistance; the Covenant didn't know that there were humans on Earth. That's what was wrong.

Oh man, I hated it so much here when there was such a big controversy on whether Bungie was right on 'holding out' on the stories of the games because the books had so much to offer.

When it comes to Bungie and storylines, theyre like ninjas masking their identity. You dont know where they're from. Everyone thinks ninjas only come from Japan but thats a cruel generalization but nontheless useful tactic in masking identity. No, Bungie is a ninja. Do not try to unmask them or you will have your hand cut off and not even see it comming.
