Doom also introduced gratuitous violence to video games, causing it to be the sole spot light for anyone with an opinion on said matter. Video from the ORIGINAL Doom is still used today by people protesting against video game violence. That gave it an aura and prestige (even if it was seen as villainous) that nothing else can match with gameplay.
And btw, this has nothing to do with my belief on video game violence. IMHO, if your child is so easily influenced by a game to want to shoot someone, there are more problems in your household than viloent games.
