Doom wasnt really THAT violent an innovation, Wolfenstien (the original) was way more violent, heck the number of people who complained about it as you shot the dogs...sheesh. Doom just got all the press though, just in the same way GTA gathers a huge amount of press behind it (ok, and rightfully so as its pretty much lacking in any kind of morals). But violence in games is nothing to do with teaching people to be violent, it can be a good stress relief as lets face it, it is just a load of pixels. The big problems come in with games like GTA which have an 18 cert being in the hands of the under 10s, its totally the parents fault in this situation, and with minds like that no wonder it can effect them so badly as it does. Halo though isn't in the position as such as a press target mostly as you're fighting aliens, and the blood ain't red, and your in the military doing it for a reason....and as always with Bungie the story is such that it gives a truely brillient reason for all your actions.
Violence in games isn't always a good thing. Its like everything, if thats all they keep shovelling out you get tired of it very quickly, and you find the only audience you have is the young kiddies that it wasnt marketted against in the first place who flock to these things as its something they shouldnt have. The only reason they do flock as they do to games like GTA is because of all the bad press they get.
