Time for throw down:
The E3 '03 video was in fact a real demonstration. If you want further evidence, look around for the bootleg version, you'll notice some differences.
Because it was brief demonstration, and Bungie prefers to tease rather than give everything away, the demonstration was choreographed for the sake of giving the large number of people going through the theater at E3 an experience that was generally the same for everyone. So, there's an extent to which each of the Bungie employees that played the demo did things the same way.
Now, to touch upon some of the things said in the first post in the thread. Use the word "open ended" with care. There's a number of things that could have been done but weren't. If the player wanted, they could have kicked the marine out of the hog (which had a coil gun, by the way, not a shotgun), and found their own path. Stuff like that.
What you have to remind yourself when you see an E3 demonstration, is that unless it's a publicly playable demo, there's a level of choreography that will permeate it. If it's a developer showing their game off, by playing as they watch, they are going to do certain things to show off features. A wounded marine gives the Chief an SMG to compliment the one he's already carrying to show off duel wielding. A Brute jumps onto the hog, and later the Chief steals a Ghost as it's being driven to show vehicle boarding. The Brute is there, in fact, to show that new monsters are in the game, even though they hadn't completed its AI yet. The melee combo used to take down the Brute that boarded the warthog was not meant to demonstrate that the Brutes are pansies, but to demonstrate that there are melee combos. The demo was more about showing these new features than giving people insight on a particular level from the game.
Oh, and to end THAT argument, the New Mombasa demo was taken from a much larger level in the game.
Lastly, if anyone EVER misses the Covenant mortar firing a blast into the nearby building, and then being blown up by the airstrike, take the bag off their head and have them watch it again. They simply weren't paying any attention to the demo. Had they been, they'd even know that the wounded marine is the one that calls the airstrike.
