SCENARIO BRIEFING:
The Covenant have landed on Earth and have created multiple outposts containing Covenant vehicles and technology. These outposts are used as the rendez-vous spot for any retreating Covenant as they bombard nearby cities.

MISSION BRIEFING:
You, the commanding Spartan of the mission are to lead a small army to attack one of these outposts. Your main priority is to attempt to commandeer any Covenant technology inside the outpost. On completing or failing this mission, the outpost will be destroyed indefinitely by Londsword fighters once you and your troops have cleared the area.

RECONNAISSANCE
A few hours ago we managed to get a few troops up onto a nearby hill of the area. They have given all the necessary information you need on the defenses and land layout of the outpost and its surroundings. We recently lost contact with them, so it is a possibilty the information given is void by now.

Here is a summary of what one of the reconnaissance troops reported:
THE LAND
* The outpost entrance is set in a steep cliff face. It is not coastal, but an inland ridge.
* The land atop the entrance is quite flat and stretches for about 1/2 a mile.
* The land level with the entrance is quite flat for around 1/4 of a mile in all directions from the entrance. Although, afterwards on the right half (when looking at the entrance) the altitude increases, making the enemy blind to that area.
* On the left (when looking at the entrance) there is a dip in the ridge of the cliff and it joins with the ground level with the entrance.
* There is a peppering of trees further out from the outpost entrance on the lefthand side, about 3/4 of a mile from the discintergrating ridge.
* Moving atop of the outpost entrance, moving away to the right, the ridge begins to curve inwards slightly until it is around 60 degrees from the normal.

DEFENSES
* 2 shade turrets on the land above the entrance. One at each side where the entrance ends.
* 2 shade turrets in the same place mentioned above, but level with the entrance.
* 6 Banshees stand at the sides of the outpost entrance, 3 at each side.
* A quickly constructed building has been constructed centrally above the entrance. This will probably serve to some snipers hiding inside.
* An array of around 16 portable energy shields have been set up in a outburst effect from the outpost entrance. They stop after about 30 metres coming out from the entrance.
* There is a cluster of around 8 Ghosts stand at the righthand side of the entrance.
* Around 4 jeep-like vehicles are set up at the mouth of the entrance (The technicians would love to get their hands on an operational specimin).
* 1 Wraith stands to the other side of the cental buildings.
* An approximate count of Elites comes to 35 patrolling through the energy shields. They rank blue and red, but 2 gold Elites have been spotted.
* An approximate count of Jackals comes to 75. They seem to walk randomly around the ouside of the energy shields.
* There is a countless amount of Grunts walking throughout the flat land surrounding the entrance. A rough estimate of around 120.
* There is 3 pairs of Hunters walking near the jeep-like vehicles.

YOUR ARSENAL
* 3 pelicans that can quickly drop any troops (10 at a time) you desire and 1 Warthog.
* 6 Warthogs, 2 APC style, 2 LAAG gun style and 2 Rocket Launcher style.
* 1 Scorpion tank.
* 50 ODSTs carrying Battle Rifles.
* 20 ODSTs carrying Sniper rifles.
* 30 ODST's carrying SMG's.
* 95 ODST's carrying Assault Rifles.
* 5 Demolition ODSTs (Rocket Troopers)
* You (Spartan Soldier)

Each ODST carries a pistol and 1 Fragmentation grenade as standard issue.

I made it up. It took ages to write as I had to keep going back and changing little things that would snag on, or contradict things I said previously.

I thought up the reconnaissance part by trying to improve on the post ODST Mission (the original post that influenced me). That mission relied on intercepting a transmission from an Elite Commander from inside a grounded starship. He basically said what troops were inside and you had to come up with a battle plan with an arsenal of 200 ODSTs and 30 commendeered Banshees (something I thought was too unrealistic). I had to hand it to guy who made the thread, it was good reading and some great replies came out of it too.

The fruits of that mission simply inspired me to make my own mission and allow people to reply a battleplan, but this time the information came from some scout troops ( which seemed more realistic)

If you have the time, please make a battleplan and post it here.

Well you wanted it so here it is.....*sigh*

Ok, I want 4 teams of 3 snipers and 2 assault rifle troops positioned at the edge of the trees to provide suporting fire, but don't fire until I give the command. We can't afford to risk a pelican so it looks like you'll be walkin. Alright now i need 5 teams of 3 battle rifle troops and 3 assult rifle troops to follow up the sniper squads and and once i give the brovo code move in to just beyond the tree line and open fire on any covies that you can see. If you move quick most grunts will get scared and scatter making them secondary targets. Kill any thing that stands and fights first. You don't have to take the most ground so make the saftey of your men top priorety. We just need you to draw attention while me and 2 demo troops, 10 AR troops, 2 snipers and 13 BR troops take all three pelicans and 1 RL and 1 LAAG warthogs to the top of the hills to the right of the entrence. The rest of you move to the far left side and hold there until the alpha code is given then move in and light those poop basturds up. Ok you've all got your orders, now move out.

I would go but i need to know some things.
1) What does APC mean?
2) How far out do the trees go.
Tell me that and i can write a whole lot more.

* A Warthog APC is one of the variations of Warthog where the LAAG gun has been removed and replaced with seating area for about 8-10 Marines to sit in. It has the usual driver and passenger seat at the front.
* The trees begin at the foot of the deteriating ridge on the left and carry on straight for about 1/4 a mile. The thickness of the 'wood' is quite thin though (about 10 metres), its more like a peppering of trees of a 'strip' than a actual wood.

Ok here I go again.

The three pelicans fly inches off the ground as the pilots try to fly as low as posible to avoid detection. They have circled around the far right side about a mile out, and are now flying alond the bottom of the cliff from the right. ETA:20 minutes.
Meanwhile the 4 sniper teams move quickly from tree to tree to get in position. Each sniper finds a nearby tree and dig in for the best shot. The CO informs the cheif that they are ready.
ETA:17 minutes.
About 1/4 of a mile back the 5 teams of battle troops run threw the forest trying to catch up to the sniper teams. They get in position next to the snipers and radio in.
ETA: 15 minutes
As the sniper and battle teams are getting into their positions, the large group of men are just leaving the field base about 1 1/2 miles back from the Covie outpost. They are all stocked up with ammo and are riding the APCs to their postitions at the far left of the entrence. Two ODSTs start talking on the trip."You hear that bs stary the cheif told us about some friggen ring out in the middle of nowhere?""Yeah frigen bull, no way thats crap is true."
ETA:10 minutes
The cheif and his men wait anxiosly as the dropships race towards their target. "Cheif, we're coming up to the bottom of the hills" the pilots voice crackled over the com. "Good. Drop us down there, no use in losing a pelican." The pelican banked steply as it dogded a large rock and came to a stop. Two laud thunks came from the rear as the warthog was relesed and droped to the ground."Alright everybody out" yelled the cheif. All the men jumped out and watched as two of the pelicans flew off.

( It's raining and I'm getting power hits so i'll finish later)

Ok, here goes.

The strike would be fast and hard. That way, the grunts would be scared and cunfused, therefore avoiding a lot of fire. The object would be to throw the enemy into dissaray.

I would have snipers set up behind the trees, and another squad of five in the blind right area. There are a couple of SMG ODST's to cover them, just in case. I would have a couple of rocket soldiers set up in the trees, and the rest out front, being dropped off by the APC Warthogs. Snipers start firing at 0:00. The two rocket warthogs would come in at 0:08, each accompanied by a LAAG warthog. They circle in, the rockets first firing at major targets such as banshees and the one wraith, and generally wreaking havoc. The LAAG's pepper the enemy forces to keep their heads down, and wound and hopefully kills a large number of soldiers. At 0:10, the APC's come in loaded with the rocket soldiers and as many other soldiers that can fit. If neccesary, one pelican will come in with extra reinforcements. The battle riflemen would stay behind the SMG soldiers. The rocket soldiers would fire about two rockets into the enemy sniper perch, and at the Shades, and the ghosts. Since we had the advantage of surprise, the enemy banshees and wraith should already have been destroyed by the rocket warthogs before they could take off. The rest of the soldiers move in, and mop up the survivers. The sniper's main target would have been the elites, and once the majority of those are taken out, the battle rifle men accompanied by the SMG's would mop up the grunts and remaining jackals with strategical grenades and the likes.

Ok. Here it goes:

I want all snipers to take the high ground. A team of 6 will target the hunters. Remember, one shot, one kill and STAY. OUT. OF. SIGHT. The remaining snipers will target the elites. Fire on my mark. I want two teams of 5 battle rifle guys to guard the snipers and mop up the surviving elites...MARK. Once the elites are dead, I want 3 of demolition guys to break up the formation of jackals and grunts while the remaining two target the wraith. a team of six assault rifle men will take the two rocket Hogs, another team of six assault rifle men will take the two chain-gun Hogs. The four will charge in ahead of everyone else while the snipers will provide cover fire. The pelicans, (I believe supplied with 50mm chain guns as mentioned in the Halo books will provide more covor fire and taking out the shades, Banshees and also dropping off 30 assault rifle men behind enemy lines. after dropping the 30 off, the pelicans will cricle around the site picking off any covenant that tries to escape. Through the confusion, 6 of the 30 dropped off will take 3 of the jeep like vehicles and take them back behind our lines to be picked up by the pelicans later. Those 6 will join in the final charge.

Then all hell breaks loose. everyone excluding the snipers will charge at once finding any cover avalible and mow down the covenant. BTW, I (the spartan) will be part of the final charge. Once they come within grenade throwing range, everyone in the charge will thow thir grenade and you could pretty much figure out what happens next. BOOM.

I know that this will result in heavy casualties but its the ony thing that came to my mind.

What about the banshees and ghosts? There are six banshees and 8 ghosts. And those can be a formidable threat, once the elites get in.

The third pelican started to take off then quikly landed, sputterd and died."Damn it! Out-a-gas."said the pilot as he climbed out of the cokpit. "Looks like I'm stuck here with you guys."-pilot "Alright stick with me and you'll live"-Sgt. Johnson as he hands the pilot a pistol, handle first. "Bravo,go." A few seconds later the sharp bangs of battle rifle bursts, and sniper shots. "Lets move."-Cheif to his men. 2 battle rifle men move in around the top of the hill and one is imediatly cut down by a sniper's beam."Damn! Everyone GO!"-cheif to everyone. 2 warthogs came flying across the field and ran over three grunts. Five shadows hummed to life and went after the warthogs. The wraith turned to fire on the snipers but was hit with 2 ifantry rockets then a rocket from a warthog. Blue plasma flames shot out from the bottom on all sides as it erupted with molten blue plasma. The warthogs were being chased around by the four remaining shadows, one was hit with a rocket and exploded, throwing the elites bodys 20 feet in the air. Both covianent and human snipers raining hell, until a well placed rocket took out the platform over the entrence. Rockets desimated the shade turrets into bits. A few marines grabed the one of the last shadows and took off. "Fall back! Fall back!"-the cheif yelled through the com. The snipers were the first to get up and run when the the whir of 4 bahnsee's engines filled the battle field. 2 were blown away by the LAAG warthogs, while the men in the shadow bolted for the field base. The covenant controled shadows quickly went after it. One of the LAAG warthogs followed them all fireing all the way. Bullets ripped threw an anti-grav dome on one side causing it to drag in the dirt eventually fliping the shadow seveal times. Another shadow slowed to a stop right in front of an eighty ton jeep driven by an inexpirenced 23 year old, yeah real smart. The warthog slamed into the driver side of the shadow killing the driver instantly, while the pasenger and gunner were filled with lead from the chain gun.
(more rain and power hits more later)

True, I forgot to do anything about the ghosts, but I did say something about the banshees if you read carefully. I expect the elites to be dead long before the final charge begins, so nothing to worry about. So just in case, the pelicans should have destroyed them. YOu know with the 50mm chain-guns?

I'm gonna write another one tomorrow.

I was kinda looking for a battle strategy rather than a quick "you stay here and fire whilst I run inside" description.

Tell me what your arsenal will actually do, like:
* Who's to go in first
* Who should hold back and give cover fire whilst someone else storms the base
* What part of your arsenal should be where
* What should your units concentrate on most

There's lots of different ways to tackle this mission, the reason I made it was to see the difference between my tactic and other peoples' tactics.

Does anyone want to hear my tactic for this mission?

ok first of all hi SPARTAN_3920....im new...and i WOULD like to hear ur tactic. I read this last night and i don't wanna read it again so some stuff may be off...anyway here goes

Ok, first off i would set snipers in trees along with soldiers with heavy weapons. I would set the Scorpian along with a missile hog on a hill or somthing like that and then have all but five men, and myself get dropped off with the Pelican behind the base (btw that would happen only after the command for fire, when all the heavy weapons and soldeirs take out important targets and keep the covies busy) the MC and the 5 marines would all have active camo, sneak into the base and take wutever they could with that amount of men. they would HOPEFULLY get out and get back to their base

remeber though...a good leader doesn't just lead his men to victory, but leads them home...somthing to remember in all ur strategies

THE SETUP
* APC Warthog filled with 5 SMG troops and 5 Battle Rifle Troops (1 BR driving, 1 SMG in passenger) x2
* Rocket Warthog with AR driver, SMG passenger and Demolition gunner (trained Rocket gunner) x2
* LAAG Warthog with AR driver, SMG passenger and SMG gunner (trained LAAG gunner) x2
* Pelican filled with 10 AR troops x3
* Scorpion Tank driven by a Demolition ODST (trained Scorpion driver) with 4 AR troops on the side seats

If I've done my math correctly there should be the following footsoldiers left:
* 40 Battle Rifle ODST
* 20 Sniper Rifle ODST
* 12 SMG ODST
* 12 Assault Rifle ODST
* 2 Demolition ODST
* No vehicles (but I use Pelicans multiple times)

THE BATTLE PLAN
Firstly, I'd use a Pelican (empty of AR ODST at the time) to drop 10 Sniper ODST off behind the trees. He then flies back to the other 2 pelicans (filled with AR ODST) some distance behind the trees (1 mile). 10 more snipers are on the ground near them and he picks them up. He flies along the ground, right round to the righthand side of the entrance (about 2 miles out to avoid detection) where there is the blind hill.

The Pelican waits there for further instruction. The 10 Snipers at the trees get dug in and wait for further instruction.

The 2 full APC Warthogs now drive to the area behind the snipers and wait for further instruction.

The 2 full LAAG Warthogs and 2 full Rocket Warthogs approach from the right towards the Pelican at the blind hill. They stay there for further instructions.

The Scorpion tank slowly crawls towards the group of vehicles (2 APC and 2 Rocket Warthogs and 1 Pelican) at the blind hill. He is followed by ALL the remainding ground troops (40 Battle Rifle ODST, 20 Sniper Rifle ODST, 12 SMG ODST, 12 Assault Rifle ODST, 2 Demolition ODST) plus 10 more AR troops that will get into the Pelican later on.

I'm now set up.

THE BATTLE
The snipers begin to fire on all the Shade turrets at the enterance, taking out all gunners. Simulateously, the Pelican behind the blind hill takes off and and lands on the ridge to the right. He drops off the 10 Sniper ODST on the edge of the ridge and then decends back to the large group behind the blind hill. The Snipers dig into any cover they can get. When the Pelican lands the 10 AR ODST get in and wait for further instruction.

Now, all 20 Snipers are in great positions against the enemy and continue to fire on them. They take out any enemy they can, but stay focused on stopping any Elites manning the Ghosts, Banshees or 'jeep-like vehicles'. They also fire on the building (supposed sniper post) to take out anyone inside.

All 4 attacking Warthogs (LAAG and Rocket) charge down the hill, firing on the energy shields and the Covenant around that area. The Rocket Warthogs fire a round each at the Sniper post and retreat back to the top of the hill at the right. The LAAG guns dart around crazily, firing at the guarding Covenant in and around the energy shields.

Now the Tank and troops pile over the hill. The tank, 2 Rocket Warthogs and 2 Demolition ODST fire on the Wraith till it is blown up. Once it is gone, the remaining troops make their way towards the entrance, escorted by the Scorpion driving infront and the Rocket Warthogs at the side.

Now the 2 LAAG Warthogs pull back a little to the outer perimeter of energy shields. They continue to fire (for cover). Now the 2 APC Warthogs charge towards the LAAG Warthogs position to assist. They drop off the 8 Battle Rifle and 10 SMG troops and scoot back to the trees (1 Battle Rifle ODST needed as driver for APC Warthog).

The 2 LAAG Warthogs hold position and fire at guarding Covenant whilst the SMG and Battle Rifle troops take cover behind energy shields. Now the 3 Pelicans fly towards the frontline troops and drop off their load (30 AR troops). The frontline troops hold position and take cover, with Snipers firing on any Covenant they can get their sights on.

The escorted troops and vehicles reach the frontline troops and join them. The Scorpion and Rocket Warthogs fire over the energy shields and eventually take out the 3 pairs of Hunters on the battlefield. Now all ODST move forwards to take out all remaining resistance (which I've come to the conclusion that its mainly patrolling troops and no vehicles).

The whole army pushes forwards, eventually getting into the base. There, I radio the Longswords and tell them to bomb the post in 30 minutes. Then, I order troops to collect certain items that remain in the outpost. Becuase of my snipers quickly taking out drivers of Ghosts, Banshees and 'jeep-like vehicles', there should be all (or most) of the vehicles left.

I order troops to begin taking vehicles and drive out to the hill at the top. The APC Warthogs will drive up their too as this is the rendez-vous for the whole army (also the place where the Longswords know are Covenant Vehicles, under Human control).

The troops begin to take the vehicles upto the rendez-vous points, afterwards getting into either Pelican or APC Warthog.

Eventually, I have:
* 5 Banshees (1 of the 6 was blown up)
* 7 Ghosts (the real number in the cluster)
* 2 'jeep-like vehicles' (2 of the 4 were blown up)
* 4 Warthogs (1 Rocket and 1 LAAG were lost in the battle)
* Scorpion Tank

The Scorpion and remaining troops also managed to bring 10 operational energy shields, 3 operational Shade turrets and some Covenant techology found inside the outpost.

All of the Covenant artifacts were collected in a pile at the rendez-vous point at the top of the hill and 32 minutes later, the Longsword fights flew in and fired missiles deep into the outpost, destroying anything left inside that the Covenant could later salvage if left alone.

Large troops vessels now fly over and begin collecting troops and vehicles to take back to a Human outpost (assisted by Pelican and APC Warthog extraction). A few vessels fly in and collect the Covenant artifacts and fly back to headquaters (heavily guarded by the way).

So what do you think?
