Subject: [Novel] Halo 3: Insurrection (COMPLETE EPILOGUE) ~ 13th September

Seems very well-written.

The story seems acceptable on its own. However, the fact that this is a Fan Fiction actually seems to do more harm than anything else. It interferes with the writing, as you must either follow the canon, limiting your writing, or you must do something that essentially is a punch in the face of the universe your fiction is based upon. Use of existing characters also interferes with it.

Your writing style holds up quite well, even following the Halo Universe (Although some things, such as the motive for war seem relatively weak and the Elites seem to follow the beliefs of the Covenant a bit to strongly). If you fixed a few problems and possibly focused more on original characters, you could write an impressive story.

-Hoping you don't mind a bit of constructive criticism.

Constructive criticism is good and all, but... you do know what fan fiction is, right? Your advice tells a different story, that you might be confused as to exactly what you are reading.

Take a look.

Fanfiction includes the characters people love from popular games, novels, movies, etc. Characters are more than half the experience itself. Imagine the popular movie "Twilight". Now, take out all the characters. Now it's just some scenic looks at North western landscape and small semi-rural towns and high schools. Not too gripping, eh?

Characters are half the reason we love this stuff. They aren't just an integral part of the story, they ARE the story. So of course fanfiction is going to based around them. If it were mostly original characters, well then it'd be closer to regular old science fiction with a Halo theme, eh?

Think about it.

As for you there Wolverfrog, just stumbled across this, not quite finished reading it yet. Good stuff though. Follows the style adequately, and the characters seem well captured.

@StoleMyName

I always appreciate constructive criticism; any feedback is good feedback. Unless it's bad feedback, of course.

Regarding what you said, the reason I wrote this and write my other fan fictions is to improve my writing, and they have helped me do this immensely. The difference in quality between the first chapter and last chapter of this story is, and I'm sure many will agree when I say this, huge. That's one of the reasons why the motive for the war is a little weak too. I don't feel that I'm ready to properly start writing a full original novel yet; I only turned 15 a few months ago and have only been writing outside of school for less than two years. So I still have a long way to go.

This is basically my "I'm going to put every awesome character and faction from Halo into one fan fiction over-the-top epic" story, and it's been very fun to write. I hope that I have captured each of the characters well to some degree, although I know fully well that some are better than others.

I have various other fan fictions centred around original characters. Of course I will always cameo popular characters from the series, because as Jobe rightly said, they're part of what make fan fiction what it is.

Anyway, thanks very much for reading it and leaving feedback, and to everyone else who has read Halo 3: Insurrection. I've read and enjoyed every single one of your comments.

For those interested, the PDF file will be created as soon as I have the free time. It would be nice to have a cover for it, but unfortunately I'm no artist. If anyone else wishes to that would be fantastic, but I'm not expecting people to go out of their way to create one.

Thanks!

Well it is better than 99.9 Percent of stuff you see on Fanfiction.net (and other sites).

Still great story overall, the start was decent, middle was better but the later parts were excellent.

@JobeTheConqueror

I see your point.

Still, I like the idea of seeing something set in an existing universe/setting/whatever-you'd-call-it, and based around a group of original characters.

The entire Covenant War is a large part of the Halo Universe, with many battles left unknown, Spartans left unseen, and places left unexplored. It seems like a story about original characters set in this Halo Universe could work quite well, especially with a good writer.

Am I supposed to write something funny here?

Awesome story Wolwer.

Two questions:
1. Is there going to be sequel?
2. What happened to Gray team and Maria? (Or do they even exist in your universe?)

1. No, and that probably won't change.
2. I never read the Cole Protocol, so didn't put Grey Team in. They're still MIA, presumed KIA. And Maria is that Spartan from the Graphic Novel, right? I'm not even sure if she's canon in all honesty.

And so here at the end of my life, I do once again betray a former master. The path ahead is fraught with peril. But I will do all I can to keep it stable - keep you safe. I'm not so foolish to think this will absolve me of my sins. One life hardly balances billions.

Wow, really, really good job Wolver!

Edit: I read yours, mind taking a look at mine?

Wow, I just realized that I didn't comment. I seemed to catch this just as it got finished up. I honestly thought it was amazing. I found myself smiling at how some of the characters fit their predetermined attitudes as well as they did (Johnson in particular). I wish I would've started writing outside of school as early as you did. I'm only starting now, after I've started college.

I know it will be a struggle to keep the ideas in here from transferring over to my own fanfic, as I find my writing style to change depending on what I've read recently. I know after reading the Halo novels, I could distinctly see my writing change and become closer to the style in them.

Anyway, the story was very awesome, and I will be sad if 343 makes a sequel to the Halo trilogy, and follows a different path than this.

I hope I will be able to get this many followers on my fic eventually (I'm on chapter 7 and only have possibly 3 readers that I know of). Good luck with any future writings and such.

Wolvers, I can truly say that this may be the best piece of writing I have read in easily the last five years. It's a true work of art. To fit such a detailed and broad story inside such a small space takes talent, and you did it almost perfectly. There were a couple mistakes, but those were so minor in terms of the whole scope of the story. Reading this put me in the action; every time Eden escaped death, I would nearly cry. I felt the pang in my heart.

Your writing unlocked the emotion within me, and kept me on my seat (literally) until the end. This needs to get more views, and, if possible, should be sent to 343 so when they inevitably make a Halo sequel, they use this. Because it's freakin' amazing.

Great job, man.

Good to see you here, and yes, I agree. We need 5 more AssualtCommands to make PDFs for everyone.
