I bought this game about 3 hours ago and have not been able to play it because I have been having major problems. First, as soon as I would launch the game, it would minimize and say "Gathering Exception Data", but I THINK that I have fixed that, but not 100% sure. Anyways, when I try to launch the game now, I get a message titled "Error" and it reads "Cannot allocate required memory. Some other application has loaded where Halo needs to be located." The demo worked fine, but it seems like the retail version may never work. I am so pissed off right now, because I just spent money on this game today and was extremely excited about playing this full version. But, if I can't get it to work, I guess Im gonna have to get Half-Life 2 :( Someone here must know how to fix this problem, so please speak up. I want to play this so bad and this sux. Thanks for any help.

First off, don't give up on it just yet!

Have you completely uninstalled it and tried installing again? This seems to resolve A LOT of problems, so if you haven't given it a go yet, try it. Secondly, what are your system specs, because I'm curious about the memory thing...

I have tried everything, and its DEFINITELY not my systems memory, because it says that another program is causing it, and I have plenty of memory. I have reinstalled about 15 times <------ Im being serious. The reason that I wanna play Halo PC so badly is because I absolutely love Halo: CE for Xbox, but it had no online capabilities. Plus, I just spent $25 for the damn thing today. And Halo 2 is an unbalanced let-down in my eyes, and im craving for some Halo PC. I guess until I figure out the problem (if i ever do) im just gonna have to continue to play Blood Gulch on the Halo PC Demo :(

Ctrl+Alt+Delete and exit all the other crap running if you are using windows 98. If you are using XP go to blackviper.com. It will help you get rid of all the crap windows runs but you don't need. Tell us your specs, we can help better if we now them.

Plenty of memory to one person could be 128MB...

Tell us complete specs, your version of windows, what else you have running, firewalls, driver versions for your video card, etc. Serve us up a page of pc jargon bs and we can probably help you more.

Ill get my specs in a sec. But first, let me tell you everything that I did since I opened the Halo PC box earlier today. First, I put the game in, and installed it. Installation went fine. But, when I tried to start Halo PC, it would minimize the HALO screen and say "Gathering Exception Data" and be like that for about 3 min. and then would say "Halo has encountered a proble and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." and would ask me if I wanted to send an error report. I spent about an hour or 2 looking for the solution and found this link on some forum: http://download.microsoft.com/download/3/2/a/32ae960e-9a8b-46 74-bb ea-92ae5e6c701b/halopc106.exe. I downloaded it and it installed automatically. I was so excited that it had gotten fixed, but when I launched the game it would come up like normal, and then say "Cannot allocate required memory. Some other application has loaded where Halo needs to be located." When I tried googling it for some solutions, hardly anything related to this popped up (meaning not many people have had this problem) and that makes me nervous, because you have no idea how bad I want to play this game right now. I have a 3 day weekend and was looking foward to playing this. If anyone here could find a fix or solution or something, I would appreciate it GREATLY, I would be so happy. Seriously, if anyone could help, I would feel so much better (im getting suicidal thoughts cause I can't play this game =-( lol! )

hmmm, first uninstall, then reinstall the game. Then, check what are the memory processes, that are running. Maybe u shoukd just get some more memory. 128 mb is hardly any.

OK, here are my specs:

Dell Dimension 8200
Intel Pentium 4 1800 MHz
256MB (RDRAM)
100GB
NVIDIA GeForce 2 MX/MX 400 (Ill be getting a new card in 2 weeks)
Creative SB Live! Value Sound Card

Anything else that any of you need to know, just tell me and I will gladly post it. (Im using Everest Home Edition to get this info on my comp.)

I don't think its my system because why didnt it say the allocated memory thing until AFTER I install the patch, huh?

i see, quite slow. Update your video drivers by going on nvidia.com, press download drivers, and selct what u wanna download. However, instead of downloading the most recent one, go on the driver archives, and dowanload an older driver that is not older than 2003. (must be 2004). Thats what i did to fix halo once. Nvidia, has neglected old motherboards, and is now losing compatibility.

If thta fails, tell me all your memory processes by holding cntrl, alt and, delete. And run a spyware scan too.

Processor is slow, but that's not the problem. I think you have a bit to little RAM. If you don't want to spend too much, you can buy some RAM on eBay, that's where I have bought a lot of parts to a new server (all good quality).
Argh, the GeForce2 series is way too slow...

The allocated memory thing means there isn't enough memory to support Halo. Some other app or the OS took over the space. You should have at least 512. Do you know how to open your case? If you can, tell us how many sticks of RAM there are along with how many slots...or a straight up picture of the inside will do. I can help you figure something out hardware wise.

Otherwise, I'd say that it's the RAM (btw, good decision to get a new graphics card).

Yeah, that piece of crap card needs to be put to death. Are you sure that its the ram? Why is it that i can play Half-life 2 and the Halo PC demo with no lag at all with full details on 800x600, but I can't even load up the full version of Halo PC? Something just doesn't seem right there. And 256MB is above the minimum requirements, so why should it not work? Plus, why does it say "Cannot allocate required memory. Some other application has loaded where Halo needs to be located" It sounds more like a problem with the files having unneccesary objects in them or something. But all I know is that I am not gonna stop trying until I get this game to work. Oh, and a bit off topic, but should I get a NVIDIA 6600GT or a ATI 9800 Pro? And how much does 512MB of RAM cost exactly.

By all means the 6600GT, it's far better.

I assume you have an AGP slot, right? In which case you need to be sure you get an AGP version of the 6600GT.

512MB can cost as little as $50.

Consider using a RAM cleaner application to free up some space. What you should do anyway:

1. Run CCleaner, a really good program. Use it to clean your history files, then use it to delete any 'ActiveX/Com' or 'DirectX' issues.
2. Run Adaware or Spybot Search and Destroy.
3. Then run a RAM cleaner.

That may help you out, spyware can be naughty. Halo is really demanding, the code sucks for it, while HL2's doesn't. However, I can't explain the situation with the demo working other than maybe a strange RAM data anomaly? I have no clue about why only Halo won't run when the demo does.

I really hope you can get the game running soon! No fun to spend a long weekend troubleshooting...

Well, thanks for feeling my pain, Davis, I really appreciate you trying hard to help me (and all of you others, too). Yeah, I was looking foward to headshotting with that pistol all weekend long, but thats most likely not gonna happen.=( I would normally think that it would be my RAM, but I do have above the minimum amount that the game requires, and what makes me wonder a lot is that maybe it was that link that I clicked on that I think fixed the "Gathering Exception Data". It could have been faulty or something. But the problem is that Im not able to check to see if it even did fix the Exception problem. Ok, this might sound confusing, but here it goes.

When I was getting the exception problem, I would lauch the game, and it wouldn't minimize and have the problem until I was at the screen that says HALO, right before the menu screen. During this time, I was having no box that ended the program and said the memory problem.

After I downloaded the patch, when I lauch the game, it doesn't go past the little box about 3inx3in, because when it gets there, it minimizes and says the memory thing.

So what I am thinking is that it's the patch thing or whatever it was (it was a clicky link in a post above) since the memory thing didn't come up at the time when it did after I downloaded the patch.

The problem may be the whole exception problem, because for all I know, it still might not even be fixed (remember, I can't go far enough into the game to check)

I just wanna know why the memory problem didn't come up until I downloaded the patch. Maybe there is a good fix for the exception problem that I know works

You get what i'm saying? I know its extremely confusing, but try to bear with me. Ask me any questions about this if you don't exactly understand. Can anyone verify what that link is downloading specifically? As you can see I am very dedicated to getting this fixed. Why does this have to happen to ME?!?!? Why!!??!? Look at my situation, I have an Xbox, Xbox Live, Halo 2, and Chaos Theory, but instead of playing that, im on my computer playing the Halo PC demo. lol, Funny stuff. =-P

well all i can say is that is the minimum needed to run the game... and when they say minimum, it means minimum. lika anything lower would be incapable of comprehending it. now 256 mb is above it, but i lost framerates when i had 256...just cause halo's programming sucks (bungie, gearbox, and micro-blam!- really botched it. badly.) anyway, if you want full options in halo, and smooth performance, i would suggest no less than 512 mb.

Dude, 256mb RAM is low.

When you consider that WindowsXP requires a MINIMUM 128mb to run properly (although on the box it will tell you 64mb...), and Halo requires the same (128mb), you can begin to appreciate just how much ram you have spare...

Now, that's not including any other processes running in the background. I hope that you are starting to see a picture here. :(

Yes, I know, but why didn't it say that I had a problem with memory before I downloaded that patch? If I had too low of memory, wouldn't it say from the start? Everytime I reinstall it, it doesn't give me any problems with my memory, just about the "Gathering Exception Data". Again, I don't get the memory error until I download that patch. And explain why I can play Blood Gulch on the demo with 16 people with no lag from RAM. Settings were all the way up on 800x600 resolution. So, Im still not convinced that its the memory, even though I am still planning on getting more later on for other reasons. Does anyone have any other ideas to what is causing the "Cannot allocate required memory. Some application has loaded where Halo wants to be located."? I just want to play this game so bad, and if I ever do get it fixed, I will be able to die a happy man ;-)

well, i used to have 256 RAM and it went fine, and i ran fraps/the dev trainer too at the smae time, and was also managing a download from the internet. It was choppy, but i ran it with no problem!

It may be the driver problem:
Here if it doesn't work download this driver

Also, read this guide:
here

By the way, u have Service Pack 2?

EDit: TRy uninstalling and installing halo. Just clicking Reinstalling doesn't affect the registry keys halo uses. It isn't necessary to remove profiles, but it may be better for u.

Man i feel sry for u, i love halo and i know how it feels.

Exactly, I know that its not my RAM. I even ran MemTest to make sure that my RAM didnt have any errors. I downloaded the older driver you had a link to, but when I tried to start Halo, it said that my drivers may have serious issues with the game, so I reinstalled the newest drivers again. I JUST CANT STAND THIS ANY MORE!!! I AM SPENDING HOURS ON THIS BUT I HAVE GONE NOWHERE!!!!! I am so pissed. Out of all the games that might not work on my PC, Halo PC just had to be one of them. Oh, and by the way, yes, i do have service pack 2. I know that there HAS to be a way to fix this problem. There just has to be. Thanks for your help Ioniz, and if anyone has had this problem or knows how to fix it, please speak up!!!! Any more help will be greatly appreciated.

okay....... check back at my earlier post. View that guide i had in that earlier post.

If that doesn't work, tell me what ur driver version is. And uninstall service pack 2. It really doesn't do too much. However, do not interrupt the unisntalling of service pack 2. If you want it back later, just redownload it. simple! Halo has had major issues with service pack 2.

ALstly if that doesn't help, download this driver:
an older driver but might work.

Get a RAM-clearing program, wipe your system clean of spyware, close out everything you can...

If that doesn't help, I'm almost positive you don't have enough. And amount doesn't nevecessarily mean much. He could have slower RAM than you did, and that can also cause such a problem...or it might not be DC.

Okay, when i was running halo today, i ran into this prob too!!! It was right after, i downloaded service pack 2. It came up, so i uninstalled sp2 plus some other updates beginning with "k89". Aftert emoving many new updates i downloaded, i ran halo!!!!!!!!1 yay!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! *fireworks going off*

Fdx, does halo just minimize or does ur computer restart? Also, download the 1.06 patch from the halo site. I'm so glad, If that doesn't work, run halo in safe mode. I know its awful, but u can still play......

But when you say it did the same thing to you today, did you mean it said the memory thing? Also, where do I go to uninstall The service pack 2. Plus, what other updates did you exactly delete?

I wouldn't recomend connecting to the internet when your using SP1. Microsoft, intentionaly or not, made it very insecure by releasing what vulnerabilities and exploits were fixed with SP2. That makes it easier for hackers to getcha. I don't think its just SP2 thats your problem though. Most people, including me, can run halo on SP2. Make sure you have version 1.06 and you might try running it in compatability mode.
