Subject: Halo 3: A Diary of Survival (Deep inside CASTLE Base)

Entry: October 25th 2552

I was afraid at first, but then who wouldn't be? Dad had always told us that they would never come. Not to Earth. But he was wrong.
He said we would be safe from them, but they still found us, hiding under the streets and houses, living like rats. And they killed us like rats.

Initially when they found us we thought we could stop them. A few of the smaller ones came at first, hobbling around on their short squat legs. They looked clumsy, uncoordinated, and almost comedic. It was like a twisted circus act, complete with a full line up of freaks.
But we quickly discovered that we were wrong.
Dad was among the first to fall. He managed to kill three of the smaller ones, but then a taller, more competent alien came.
I can still see the image in my head of when dad was shot - bright blue streaks of fire piercing the air. He fell, and never got up again.
Then we ran. We all ran.

I managed to find a small sewer pipe just big enough to fit inside. I crawled up as quickly and as quietly as I could. Then I stopped, and listened to the screams. They seemed to echo along the pipe, torturing me for leaving, for running. But eventually, even the screams ended.

For days I lay there in complete silence. Riddled with cramp, and daring not even to sleep or scratch as I played host to a flood of cockroaches.
On the fourth day the sewer became unbearable. So I took a chance and headed for the surface...

...what I saw broke me.

I finally emerged from my pipe enclosed hell - tear soaked, stained with blood and sweat, with a small collection of insects for company.
I half expected to die when I crawled out. I thought they would be waiting for me, waiting for my head to poke out from the pipe before frying me with plasma.
But instead there was silence.

The previous scenery of houses and towering office blocks had been swept aside and replaced with a dark and desolate landscape of carnage and devastation.
Smoke bellowed from the surface in thick black columns that stretched into the bleak featureless sky, casting large shadows over the once glorious New Mombassa skyline.
At the base of each black tower was a glaring inferno that seemed to give the smoke a life of its own.
There was no sign of the Covenant soldiers that had destroyed everything in sight; only the results of their arrival gave any indication to their presence.

In the distance I could make out the faint silhouette of the soccer stadium. The spider-web bowl was now just hulk of debris. Small fires licked away at the walls along with the occasional spark of a broken power conduit.
But despite the sight before me, I knew we were lucky.
My older brother had enlisted in the Marine Corps. His visits home were filled with stories of the battles he had survived. Each planet these aliens attacked had been scorched beyond recognition. So in that respect, we were lucky. I had not been reduced to glass. Not yet anyway.
But Home was gone. Mombassa was now a shell. So I walked, in the hope that I would see a friendly face.

I didn't stop until I reached the Tsavo highway.

As I walked along the broken streets I thought back to simpler times; times when my brother and I would go camping.
We would sit around a glowing camp fire, telling stories to each other before gazing up at the stars in the night sky.
But things hadn't always been that easy.
When he was eight years old, and before I was born, he was diagnosed with a degenerative brain and spinal disease, one which no doctor could cure. They were quick to condemn him to a life of restriction, and gave him just months to live. But against all the odds he pulled through, defying every medical fact and opinion to lead a full and healthy life.
This was just the start of his luck.

Years passed with no reoccurrence of his condition, but when he hit adolescence he started to develop in ways that most teenagers didn't.
The rare condition that had almost killed him years before was now helping his body to grow and adapt. He became stronger and faster.
When he reached the age of 18 he joined the Marine Corps and left our home: Eridanus-2, for the fortress world of Reach.
A year later we moved as well, but to Earth. Only a month after we left Eridanus-2, the Covenant destroyed the colony.
If my brother had decided to stay at home instead of leaving for the Marine Corps, we would all have died. Years after that attack my brother was posted to Earth. 3 days later Reach was destroyed.
It seemed he had developed a knack for evading death.

The Covenant seemed to have started all over again. Last night there was a lot of activity in the sky, but most of it was towards the other end of New Mombassa. Lot's of bright lights in the sky.

The last few days have been somewhat unusual; the eerie quiet of the city has given the whole area an air of peace, which almost sounds absurd considering what's happened. The hustle and bustle of the city and the constant movement of shipping containers and cargo vessels meant that Mombassa was always filled with noise. But all that has since been replaced a deathly quiet.

I began to think back to only a few months ago when my brother left Earth for another short term detachment. He couldn't say exactly where he was being posted but it was defiantly on the edge of UNSC space. He just used to refer to his new destination as the 'crown jewels'.
Despite my brothers' initial enthusiasm for his new found posting; he was a little concerned by the commanding officer that pulled rank to get him there. He was pulled from the ranks of the 33rd Marine Division, where he was getting on with things. But despite his protests and those of his old CO, he was obliged to move.

I haven't heard from him since he moved. I hope he's alright.
Should only be a few more days until I reach the Tsavo highway. Then I can see if anyone is left in Voi.

I can only hope now.

It'd be better If you weren't Blacklisted and I could read It...

Oh hey. Now I can read It. Brilliant. It's good to see a Halo story from the perspective of a civilian ^^

This story and the epilogue go hand in hand with each other. They are linked in ways that you may not have thought of, or imagined.

The Earth seems lost to me, and already alien. No longer the magnificent capital that it once was; New Mombassa is just a shell now, a decrepit and battered shell. The thousands of dead that once littered the streets have all but added to the decay in the intense heat. Viscous winds whip the ruined streets, adding yet more problems.

The last few days and nights have seen the sky filled with dozens of Covenant cruisers, all of them scarring the surface with energy beams. I've even seen several UNSC Pelicans, but despite trying my best to attract their attention they simply carried on their way.
The only bit of good news is that I found a rifle yesterday and a handful of grenades. Hopefully I won't need them.

I was woken from my broken sleep last night as well. The remaining sections of the orbital lift finally gave in to gravity, and fell. The noise was unbelievable.
There was also a falling star just before dawn. At first there was one bright light descending towards New Mombassa, but then a piece of it broke away and fell separately to the ground, far to the west. I was immediately tempted to find out what it was, but no doubt it just another UNSC ship on the receiving end of a Covenant attack.
My prayers go out to any survivors.

By the power of truth, I, while living, have conquered the universe.

You're very clever, Max and I think I may have it figured out who this protagonist's brother is.

In all honesty it won't really matter if you find out who the brother is, but it may spoil a small part of the Epilogue.
The next part of the Epilogue will reveal a great deal, both abot the Forerunners and John.

You should put all this in a word document really and save it in two diferent places, it's really good. It's the thing I'd have loved to see in a Halo advertising campaign like an interactive diary
