I still have to disagree when it comes to Halo 2. IMO, Gameplay was stale, has little replayability, and multiplayer was inferior.
Halo 2 had its faults, after the initial pant wetting opening levels of the campaign and a quick blast around the MM maps you did feel that it was a bit of a rush job, especially after the pop-up of some of the textures and the "I have been here before, but not quite" feel of the gameplay...
Now, the problem is that if they had kept Halo 2, looking and feeling exactly like Halo CE then Bungie would have been criticised for not bringing the series along technically....so either way Halo 2 was always heading for a fall....especially after the funktacular Halo CE
Personally, I don't feel that getting a new game engine did anything to help Halo 2 or the series. All it did really was change what made CE great: health for tactical thinking, balanced weapons, character looks, etc.
And really, the gameplay and environment suffers for it. With CE, all the outdoor textures looked slightly different, and the terrain changed visibly. They may have reused parts, but at least they dressed it up accordingly before the game went Gold.
Yeah I do not think that the new engine worked exactly how Bungie would of hoped, texture pop ups and a complete move away from the moody yet vibrant style of Halo CE. I am of the opinion they should of held back the new engine, for a more powerful operating system to utilise, and kept the same feel as the original Xbox was pushed to its limits by Halo2
All in all I feel that Halo 2 was a little rush-rush for my liking.....and will never forgive Bungie for leaving out the unfinished New Mombassa level demo....although Halo CE was rushed it still felt more solid and more complete than any of its follow ups
