Not everyone has forgotten this, and it has been brought up before. The problem is that the only proof of another group may exsist is in a few words. In the Fall of Reach when Cheif Petty Officer Mendez says his farewells to the Spartan IIs it was mentioned that he was going off to train another group of Spartans. In reality the Master Cheifs Spartan training last only about 8 years since it began at age 6 and ended at age 14 in the year 2525, which as a total of around 27. In that time period an additional 3 more groups of Spartans could have been created since each group takes 8 years to complete their training. But you must remember that these books are based around the journies of the Master Cheif and not any other group of Spartans other than his. So, maybe in the next book (or even Halo 2 for that matter) we may hear of these other groups of Spartans. Since Reach fell in the year 2552 which was 27 years after the Master Cheifs training was completed the training of Spartans could no longer be conducted their. But, maybe the UNSC and the ONI (Office of Navy Intelligence) Section 3 spooks in Intelligence had a eerie feeling that the Covenant may have found out about this training within that time period, so they may have moved to a planet closer to Earth. This is all possible, but we have not been given enough information to clarify any of this because either Bungie has no plans to include more Spartans in their Halo games or we just will have to wait and see how everything unfolds in Halo 2.
There was another mention about additional Spartans though in First Strike. While Dr. Halsey was looking through a former ONI worker's (Ackerson) secret files she found something very interesting. She found one file called "S-III" or in simple terms Spartan IIIs. She was also suprised to find that all of her Spartans personal medical files had been search through. Could this have meant that Ackerson wanted to get back at Dr. Halsey for creating such a powerful group of soldiers that made him look back, so he was planning to make his own which were stronger, faster, and more efficient that the original Spartan IIs? It is all very interesting to look into, but as I have said before we need more information in order to along all of our speculations to been clarified. So we must just sit tight, look through the information we have, and hope for a deep and intelligent story surrounding these facts in Halo 2 or upcoming Halo novels.
