Man I just love these kinds of discusions! Have any of you heard of the "Brane" theory? It's a theory that our universe is just a brane of another universe ( a brane is a 3-d membrane). Ok, now the theory specualtes that only gravitons can cross the brane. Now that explanes the mystery of dark matter and other gravitational phenomenoms. This could also explain slipspace drives. The drive could some how make the ship cross the brane into the alternate universe, and if you draw a tangent in a circle it is shorter than the area traveled by the outer edge of the circle. It wouldn't be instant travel but, it would take much less time than traveling in Einstienian space. What do you think?
Sounds like you would love Stephen Baxters 'Xeelee Sequence' novels. They're about an ancient, time-travelling race called the Xeelee that create a dimensional rift made up of a billion-light-year length of cosmic string that created a ring that spanned hundreds of millions of light-years - its gravity well drew entire galaxies into its body. They created this ring as a dimensional portal to escape from Photino Birds (as they were called). The Photino Birds reside inside stars while accelerating the evolution of stars until all of the baryonic star cores in the universe are converted into star-sized objects of dark matter.
If you haven't read it, read them. They're very interesting novels. I'd suggest 'Vacuum Diagrams' it is a collection of short stories that tell the tale of the entire 20 billion years of the Xeelee sequence.
