UNSC Ship Weaponry

ASGM-10 missiles - High explosive, guided missiles.

HE Anvil II missiles - High explosive, guided missiles.

Moray mines - The Moray mines have chemical-fuel drives that allow them to keep a fixed position or move to track specific targets. Moray mines can be programmed for timed, proximity or remote detonation. They can also be programmed to release or attach from or on any ship.

Archer missiles - High explosive, guided missiles. Archer missiles can be fired in volleys ranging from 180 missiles to 500 missiles.

50mm Auto cannons - Auto cannons used as the point-defense of UNSC ships.

MAC (Magnetic Accelerator Cannon) round - 600 ton super-dense ferric tungsten shell fired at extreme velocities.

MAC round (special) - Light round with a ferrous core and outer layer of tungsten carbide - the round splinters on impact, similar to the ‘shredder’ rounds of the MA5B AR. These rounds were used on the Pillar of Autumn.

Mark V MAC round - 3000 ton projectile accelerated to c-fractional velocities with a five second rate of fire. The Mark V MAC is used for planetary defense.

Shiva warhead - Remote/time/proximity detonated nuclear missile.

UNSC Ships

Frigate:

* One and a half to two meters of titanium-a battleplate
* Twenty-six Archer missile pods - 780 total
* One MAC gun
* Three Shiva warheads

Destroyer:

* Two meters of titanium-a battleplate
* Two MAC Guns
* Twenty-six oversized Archer missile pods - 780+
* Three Shiva warheads
* Six emergency thrusters

Halcyon Class Cruiser - The Pillar of Autumn:

* Honeycombed titanium-a battleplate with hydraulic backup reinforced armor
* Back-up A.I. to handle point-defense
* Forty 50mm auto cannons for point-defense
* Forty Archer missile pods - 1200 total
* One MAC gun (special) capable of firing three successive MAC rounds (special)
* Remote-piloted Longsword loaded with a Shiva nuclear warhead
* Capable of operating at 300% efficiency due to having two extra fusion reactors capable of supercharging the main reactor
* Smallest UNSC cruiser - one third the size of Marathon Class cruiser

There are, of course, many more UNSC ships such as the carrier, supercarrier, cruiser (which is the most powerful UNSC ship), ONI Prowlers, stealth ships, corvettes, etc but next to no information (or very little info) is given about them, that I have found at least.

Why missiles? Missiles can't function in space.

Yes they do, what do you think the Saturn V rocket was, a huge missle shot into space to deliver astronauts to the moon.

Missiles... can't... function... in... *looks totally whacked* You've got to be kidding me? Where the hell did you get that idea? The space shuttle is a giant freakin' guided missile...

Rockets and missiles aren't the same thing. Missiles get there oxygen from the atmosphere. Rockets carry their own oxygen reserve. That's why they can't call it missiles but rather rockets.

So what your proposing is that in the year 2552, humans can't make a space missle because of a lack of oxygen. They would just put an oxygen tank on it.

Anything containing it's own oxygen to make fuel combust can't be a missiles it is automatically denominated as a rocket. Theres big differences between both in terms of efficiency and function is space.

Unless, in the future, missiles don't use fuel anymore and use another form of energy which they can gather from space. Does the books say anything on what fuel those missiles use?

*shrugs*

Conservation of momentum...the missiles gain the velocity of their ship.

Though the Iroquois was able to fire off its Archers while flying backwards...

I think... because Missiles sounds better than saying 'guided rockets'?

Anyway, great job Constantine.

I have to agree missile sounds more intimidating than rocket. :p But, probably missile because they are more powerfull, but then again that would not make as much sense as most of their scientific explanations.

Just cos the moray mines were in the longsword doesn't neccesisarily mean longswords normally carry them. Also not the longsword was equipped with moray mines especially for the mission.

Good point. Amended.
Also not the longsword was equipped with moray mines especially for the mission.
Well, this particular Longsword was the one MC used to escape Halo. As far as I know, there was no planned mission for it. Unless I missed something in 'The Flood' - I haven't read 'The Flood' in quite awhile.

In military terminology the definitions of 'rocket' and 'missile' are different. A 'rocket' is an unguided solid or liquid fueled projectile, whereas a 'missile' is a solid or liquid fueled projectile that is also equipped with a guidance system. As far as I can recall from the novels Archer missiles are indeed equipped with a guidance system and are therefore missiles as far as the military is concerned. (Just take a look at a random sample of modern "missiles", the vast majority of them carry both fuel and oxidizer onboard, only cruise missiles are air breathing)

No way to tell precisely, however I think it's safe to expect dozens of blocky human war machines significantly larger then the Pillar of Autumn.

actually, i wouldn't say dozens of cruisers. at the time of Sigma Octanus (or was it Reach?) Keyes mentioned that there were only 20 cruisers left in the fleet. subtract 3 cruisers (those lost at reach), plus the fact that some of the cruisers are probably not at earth, and there might be a dozen cruisers at earth.
