I started this thread for us people who are new to the Marathon series. You have tips? Hints? Walkthroughs? I say post 'em here! Right now I'm stuck on the level Defend This! If worst comes worst, then you can check out the marathon spoiler page, but c'mon, don't do that until you're absolutely stuck.

Marathon's the toughest game of them all- it was hard because the weapons weren't strong enough or found early enough- so know that you are just being bothered by the hardest one of the Marathon series.

You're gonna be having a ball with this game if you thought that was hard. Puzzles and running around levels, let's not forget the endless barrage of the Pfhor, and if you live to see it you're certainly going to love trying to become the Vidmaster in Marathon Infinity. I can still recall the countless times I screwed up the last room on Marathon Durandal... hey, PiD was hard, too (last I played it it was... which was over ten years ago).

I think infinity was done by doubleaught (or something) rather then bungie, though it was published and such by bungie - I assume they don't hold the full rights to infinity so they can't ok a release of it on the net.

Though you can spend $15 (i think) and buy the mac action sack, and own all three marathon games, as well as getting PID and minotaur (not that many people can play them) and all this in an awsome cloth sack (which doubles as a colostomy bag if you read the packaging)

I think you get an oni pad as well, I can't remember :(

Besides Pathways into Darkness, Marathon is the most insanely hard yet incredibly fun game I have ever played. If you are really having trouble with it, I suggest lowering the difficulty level of the game until you develop strategies for defeating each of the enemies you face in multiple scenarios, and until you feel comfortable with all of the gameplay mechanics, such as strafing to avoid fire, grenade hoping, beserking enemies, using you map, etc. Afterwards, you can start raising the difficulty level in increments until you are finally playing like a pro!

Hmm, maybe I should write up a short tutorial demonstrating some of the more basic strategies used to improve you Marathon game…

I wonder if anyone ISN'T having a hard time with Marathon; I know I am. Of course, I am't going to play for a while seeing as I am on vacation for the next three weeks. But maybe I will be refreshed and stuff enough to do something when I come back...

It shows its a good game when its hard :P

besides, the worst is yet to come... you end up playing levels without ANY computer terminals... you'll be begging for even the slightest bit of random ramble from durandal ;-)

But you'll be loving every bit!

Yeah, it seems like the most I get out of Durandal where I am in the game is, "You like killing don't you? You are really good at killing. Kill some more, and then collect ammo."

Well, if you analyze the story like the people on Marathon's story page do, you'd understand what Durandal goes on about... serventile to the machines... Infinity is about Rampancy...

Sure, Infinity's Vidmaster challenge is tough, but since they are only 3 levels, it can't compare to the Marathon difficulty.

Yes, actually it very easily can.

Smeeisqualityfoo, the scenario design was done by Double Aught, which consists of two members I don't know of and Greg Kirkpatrick, who is credited as the co-writer of Marathon. So the game still retains it's trueness to the original two in that aspect, the story just gets a whole lot funkier and more complicated (somehow). Infinity uses the Durandal engine, and the engine is under GNU... so I don't know if that means subsequent games under it are free as well or not. Bungie did release M2 as freeware as a fan-service, and the own Infinity as well anyway, so I'd say that it *probably* is free too, but I really don't know. I have all three, and if it is free to distribute I'd be glad to help someone who is on a PC since the PC has no hope of playing PiD anyway. Otherwise, if you own a Mac then I'd say to buy the Action Sac since you'd be getting an official copy of the whole trilogy plus PiD, which is worth the price of admission alone. Not sure about those other two games; never played 'em.

At one point if you were watching the Bungie webcams I think Frankie was looking at some of the videos that were posted in this thread.

I knew it was something like that =)

The engine (source code) was released under GPL, but the data files were still owned by their respective copyright holders.

Yeah, that's been mentioned in other threads on this board - I haven't seen any official word so I prefer to be cautious on that sort of thing. It would be great though if the data files for M2 and Moo were made available for download for PC and Mac, as suitable for AlephOne.

I have all three, and if it is free to distribute I'd be glad to help someone who is on a PC since the PC has no hope of playing PiD anyway. Minotaur only works on very old macs using an appletalk network - I haven't tried it on OSX but I would be supprised if it worked. Abuse is good fun, worth playing if toy have the chance. Not sure if PID works on OSX - might give it a go sometime soon.

It's worth buying the Sack if you only have a PC anyway, as you can use some utilities to get the M2 and Moo data files off the disc and play them using aleph one.
