It is possible, but it's not recommended as the game is severely crippled. However, that is not the say that you can't play the game at all.

Possible yes, but illegal in 99% of the cases. Ive heard of some running H2V without any kind of hacks on XP but those are mere rumours.

I have yet to hear of anyone confirmed legally playing H2V on XP.

Why is it illegal, exactly?

What these hacks do is change the software environment, not the software itself. Doing this is almost, to put it simply, comparable to running a game (you paid for) on an emulator - again, the software is untouched - it's just loaded on to the operating system via another means.

Which is stated in the EULA as not being allowed.

First point in article 6, scope of license of what you may not do is: "work around any technical limitations in the software;"

So basicly using a hack to run it on XP is working around the limitation imposed on the program to limits it use to windows vista.
