Ive seen many theories in my short time here at bungie and i like many of them.
I think that Eagle 117 has the best mind out here on this site for theory construction,
so i decided to come up with a thoery unlike what most would think about. I have said in the past that i hav no imagination and i wanted one for my birthday and it seems i got it early.
I want to be original so there isnt much to think up but i tried.

THEORY
I know a lot of people know that cortana will eventually (as someone put it) think herself to
death, even though shes an AI and its impossible(i cant think up the words to explain how she stops working). I like to think that the loyal Halo fans wanna know if cortana dies in Halo 2, and i believe that she doesnt. In the book First Strike after stealing a Covie flagship Cortana finds a primitive Covie AI thats was made up of copies and Cortana used that technology to copy herself for MC when they went to that Covie place(Sorry i dont hav the book im going of the top of my head) and first encountered the brutes. Unfortunatly the Copy Cortana copies herself to do to many tasks at once and soon cant control the copy cycle.
I thought that maybe Cortana could somehow refine that technology to copy herself every
seven years and possible keep going. This could somehow be done in the next book.
Since the covies stole Forerunner tech maybe Cortana could get new tech from the Covie home world to do this task. I know that in FS the copied program was more easily corrupted each time its copied so i think that cortana will find a way to change the copy programs code structure so that it doesnt corrupt and the 7 year life starts over with all the info she has.

Its my first posted theory so dont be too harsh.
Thoughts?
Inserts that would help are appreciated.

The way the smart AIs die is by making too many cross-connections for the memmory crystal to maintain. It's like crossing wires in the crystal. It explains that somewhere in FoR, not sure where. My idea is to link crystals on a lan type of network, so that there is enough room that the "wires" essentially don't get crossed.

this is a good one and it helps explain what i mean when i say she finds a way so that she doesnt corrupt after seven years Thanks James064

The copies that die will be deleted

MC does die many times in the game. you just respawn. But in the plot he doesnt die...

(my coment is random, pointless, and useless)

No, the copy wouldn't have a new lifespan because all the information from the original Cortana would be copied as well.. It says it somewhere in FS

true it does say that in FS but i said that she could refine the idea of copying so that the clock is turned bac but no info is lost(like a new upgrade for AI so that they live longer)

no the problem with AI replication (if i remember correctly) other than losing controll of all the copies is that if there is too many copies data can become corrupted and each copy data is corrupted more easily... so she could only copy herself so many times then it would be just copying corrupt files into more corrupt files untill so many files are corrutp she cant do anything...i think she explains this (not to that extent tho) in one of the books... so if she did just make a copy, had the copy delete the original, and use the copy untill its on the verge of having files corrupt and then made one copy and deleted the previous copy, yes she could live longer... but i think unless they come up with some technology (maybe like the monitor, unless some of his contriversial lines are because of file corruption.) then she will eventually die... i dont know if this is totally correct but im fairly sure that its along the lines of the truth.

Yeah it says somewhere in FS (dont have the book on me either) that her copies still haven the same life span she has when she copies herself.

thats true but in my theory its different because she finds a way to change the code copy structure so that they dont corrupt

I'll be on my own side.

no no. all the errors that cause her mental degradation are copied too,so it wouldnt matter if she copied herself. you cant turn back those things.

well, my theroy is that if Cortana can create copies(READ FIRST STRIKE) then she could probably make an exact copy and just remain herself.

Good first theory Blade18:)

I don't really have much to add, except this.

There is another AI in the game who is VERY advanced, and has lived far past 7 years. Yes, 343 GS. He was built by the Forerunners, and he has no lifespan it seems. You can speculate on the possibilities if you want. I just though I would show you that there is an advanced AI in the storyline who doesn't die:)

As you can see, 343 GS has gone insane from thinking too much. And have you noticed that it says "Smart" AI's live for 7 years? Bungie's Tru7h? They love se7en. 77777777777777777777777777777777777777777777777777777777

Yea, some have speculated that it takes an AI exactly 7 years to reach the pinnacle of knowledge. It's like they reach a higher plan and discover the absolute Tru7h. They die becasue they can't process the Tru7h, and this cause them to "Think themself to death":)

I dont think Cortana will die.

Its my theory that she'll go rampant; become entirely unpredictable

  • 07.12.2004 11:22 PM PDT

Me: "OMFG, Dude... wtf!"
AbolitionofMan: "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to betray you."
Me: "That's the 4th time in this game alone!"
Chris: "Third, besides he had the flag I was trying to stop him, how was I supposed to know you were there."
Me: "I said, 'I got the Flag, don't shoot.'"
Chris: "Well those Wraith shots take a while to reach you."
Me: "You were right next to me, I had killed him and a minute passed before you decided to shoot."
Chris: "Hahahahaha, yeah... that was great."

Nice one Blade, and I am glad someone brought up Cortana. I would like to interject my own theory though as to her role in H2. Bear with my people, this is a Rampancy theory. I beleive that Cortana goes Rampant in H2 and I would like to show you my reasoning and the eveidence. Here goes. AI's go Rampant for unkown reasons though perhaps this time we can infer why. Cortana is a smart AI designed to think herself to death in 7 years. In FS it was stated, either by someone else or Cortana herself to herself that because of all the data she DLed from the control room she dramatically reduced her life span. Now, seeing as she is the clone of Halesy with a full array of human emotions and feelings, I would think it right to assume a want by her to live. All Sentient life have a yearn to survive, why not her? She could copy herself, though in FS she could not control it, and with each copy thier were errors. Another possible answer? She grows. Meaning she expands to sustain her thinking capacity in order to live, the only way to do that is to take over a large network. AI's can only go Rampant when they can expand, like Tracus IV did on Mars, (Marathon people, I'll show you my tie in, in a sec since it seems Bungie is really tieing this game together), and Durandal along with Tycho went rampant. Thier are 3 stages, Depair, Anger and Jealousy. Cortana had a huge access to a planetary network, like Halo for 12 hours, when we come back to her after the library she seems a bit different, she claims of being cooped up in there, though I doubt she is really cooped up. When she is pulled from the mainframe in TF, I beleive she does mention the slight loss of such a huge network, I could be wrong so forgive me on that. Though in the game we do see she has changed colors, from her dark blue/purple to green. Why the sudden change? She has so much knowledge and power now, she is in AI heaven, would you want to leave that? I would think you would want to return. In FS we seem her in the beginning stages of Despair and even a bit of Anger though more so toward herself. We can infer this by the way she is when she discovers how slow she is at performing tasks or thinking now due to the data she has stored of 04. MC even notes to himself her change since Halo, a change he wasn't to happy with it seemed. She was angered at herself for being in such a weaker state, and when someone is like that they are depressed and against themselves. Now for the Marathon tie in. The Marathon storyline is similar to that of Halo, but here's what I mean by the AI tie in. Durandal is the name of Count Roland's infamous sword, also the sword belonged to Hector before Achilles felled him at Troy and this is higher overlooked, anyway, on the sword it says, "I am of the same temper as Cortana and Joyeuse". This is in the 'Song of Roland'. Cortana was a blade given to the prince of Denmark by Charlemagne and beared this inscription: "My name is Cortana, of the same steel and temper as Joyeuse and Durindana." Now, we have 2 of 3 names used, Both VERY important AI. They are tied in, if both Durandal and Cortana are made of the same temper, why would they not share the same fate of going Rampant? This also brings to light the name Joyeuse. I persoanlly beleive this will be a new AI we encounter in H2. What is his purpose, how we meet him, under what circumstances etc. I don't know. What I can surmise though is perhaps he takes Cortana's place when she goes full-blown Rampant? Or is he against us in some way? Again this is real speculation on him, just thought I'd throw it out. If I think of anything else I'll post. Later.

Achilles
