I tend to disagree. Quit begging for updates guys, and pull yourselves together - they're not coming. Gearbox has already done us all a huge favor by not only releasing Halo CE, but also HEK. When people got tired of the problems Counterstrike had, did they whine and greif to Valve? Hell no they didn't - they took the engine and modded the bejesus out of it. TFC, NS, ESF, DOD - sweet Jesus, they all rocked. I could go SSJ2 on a HL mod and whip out a kaioken kamehaha - r0x the h0us3!! But seriously, if we don't like it, we should consider that Gearbox was kind enough to place the fate of Halo for PC in our hands. We have HEK, We have CE with fixed netcode and better server console commands thanks to Gearbox. Be thankful.

Until you make a map, delagginator, or something like it - (I'm hoping to write a Java program that parses logfiles in CE and compiles player statistics), then don't complain - take the opportunity to learn a new skill - modding - and contribute and invest yourself into the community and the game you love.

This is OUR game now. Make of it what you will.

You are whining - the game works fine. The game is worth far more than you paid for it and the available mods & modding tools- CE, HEK, etc. are free.

I don't see how modding doesn't make any difference. CE has a pretty decent following for a mod and HL benefited greatly from the mods that were made for it. A lot of people here enjoy CE, and if more people gave it half a chance, I think it could be better.

So you can do two things, guys:

#1 Piss & Moan and pray for a miracle that will never come
#2 Fix it yourself

Learn a new skill - mod. You guys just want this stuff done FOR you. Ask not what your gaming community can do for you, but what you can do for your gaming community.

--On the plains of hesitation bleach the bones of countless millions who, at the dawn of victory, sat down to wait - and waiting, died.

I'm calling this: There will not be another official patch or update released for Halo PC. Prove me wrong Bungie - it'll be the first one I've called and been wrong on.

I second that. Anyone that thinks they can get a worthwhile patch, if one at all, is either messed up or way too hopeful and idealistic.

You can say to a company about software that they need to continually patch and support it, even 4 years later. At that point they stop and move on, they look to the future, they don't wallow in the past. If they did it would take longer to get new games.

I seriously see no problems with Halo right now.

ill back that up to the last...

aM Inspire made two impressive and meaningful posts..
bungie is NOT gonna look back at halo and give us an update
or patch ... people dont u realize... instead of then having the
power to change halo and etc.. thay gave it to us thru HEK and HCE
like inspire said its OUR game now.. people.. learn to mod, do it and have fun.

I can see the ambition present in other modders to keep Halo alive, especially if Halo SE comes through. Who knows, that could come out incredibly well. It has taken them a long time to make what they have so far, and from what I hear it is coming along really nicely.

I'd be willing to devote a lot of time this summer to some modding, if anyone else is interested. Currently, my schedule is impossible. I get about 4-6 hours sleep, maybe, every night, and I'm in a bit of a crunch with too much going on. If we can get a plan going right now, and we all devote a bit of time to getting better at HEK and 3ds Max, we could all produce something pretty incredible.

To keep this alive, we need to stray a bit from the 'just another ce map' path. The flood of simple download->unzip maps can get monotonous, granted many are great. I'm not suggesting embarking on an SE-sized adventure. That has taken experienced modders months and months. We need to do something just a bit different. Vietnam. That project flopped with my last group because people got lazy. but it was going places. We had the helicopter as the banshee, and had some awesome weapons. All we needed to do was edit those more, get a larger map with the tunnel system we had devised, and thicken the foliage and add some new elements like rice paddies and such. It had potential, and I may still have the bitmaps, textures, and level geometry.

Any other great and original ideas? I will say Recon did not jack this thread at all. Like I've said, no more updates will come, at least in my mind that's an impossibility right now.

What does everyone really want out of Halo right now? Technical fixes, new maps?

True, the only place to get a full CTF game is HaloPC, if even that, because CE has so few players...

Ya know.... Natural Selection has over 25,000 unique players DAILY.

Remember that CS was just a HL mod..... NS was just a HL mod.... TFC was just a HL mod..... DoD was just a HL mod..... ESF was justa HL mod......

If people aren't willing to invest a little more to improve their own gaming experience, I say screw em.

And believe me, guys, Valve has Nothing on Bungie.

Mr. B- do you think an online stats program that ran server-side might help CE?

I'll have a go at it.

Hordes of enemies laugh at your feeble attempts to survive in alien tongues. This is suicide.

BTW - nobody really played HL online - the mods for it were more popular than the original game. Your point still remains, of course, but I would say that we're not doomed. The people who try need both your advice, Mr. B - and your support.

I'm new to halo pc so help me out a little. Uh, what exactly did gearbox do? Also, how do I get started modding? What do I need to know to mod? What software do I need?

Gearbox converted Halo Xbox to Halo PC. They also released Halo CE (custom Edition. Only available for PC because MacSoft is a bunch of lazy bums), and HEK. They left it open for the pubilc to mod. This whole thread is about the history of modding etc.

Anyway, the best place to ask and learn how to mod is http://files.halomods.com .

Software for modding HPC is available here for PC users, and here for Mac users.

A tutorial for modding is available here .

CAVEAT: Modding is a long, complicated, and frustrating process for beginners. However, if you trudge through that, you can make some truly cool and unique things.

Anyway, have fun, and don't pull out TOO much of your hair.

Someone mentioned this earlier, can we make our own patch? If not, maybe bungie or gearbox could change the message of the day at the bottom of the server list to include something about CE.

SLD: I like your idea of not-too-SE-sized but not-too-Cell-sized content for Custom Edition. I'd like to see a few projects like that in the future.

As much as I like the idea of Custom Edition's comeback, I don't think it will ever happen. To be realistic, it is fairly obvious that although Halo CE is better, Halo PC is the favorite pick partly because about 50% of Halo PC players have no idea what CE is. Community awareness has risen, but hardly anybody has an interest in CE (they seem to be content with PC). Custom Edition seems to be a strictly-fanboy thing now. Most players on Halo PC say they've heard of CE and don't want to download it. I've fed them a few purposely leaked SE screenshots and stuff (can someone say Enflamed?), but they still don't seem to have interest in CE. It's like the weird kid at school: the teachers force you to play with him, and some people start to like him, but everyone else just points and laughs. Sad as it is, I think CE's glory days have already come and gone. We are now forced to sit and watch as it dwindles away.

Good while it lasted, though.

G'night from,
Stewart

If you'd like to quit and watch as it dies, I suppose that's your business. Because I have likewise quit -blam!-ing for a patch, and I'm watching the fix-all patch that will never come die.

Meanwhile, I am doing something to rectify my situation. Check out the Halo CE stats project that is stickied in this forum. Why do people play Halo 2 so much more? Better weapons? CE's got it. Better maps? CE's got it. No, friends - I think its because they love to log onto Halostats and witness a detailed record of their own personal pwnage.

Call it dead, call it too late, call it pissing in the wind - I don't care. While your support is welcome, your criticism is even more welcome. Its fuel either way. The stats project will be done and I think it will change CE, maybe not much, but I'l sure as hell play more - I want my pwnage chronicled....

You get out of it what you put into it.

It's not dead yet... but if melodrama's your thing...

Thanks, Mr. B - you say you have a CE dedicated server on? Once the program is near completion, I'll need some beta volunteers. I can't do it on my box - it starts lagging after 4 ppl get in.

I'd like to know some more about this stats program thats been made already. I've spent a few hours on Google looking for something and I can't seem to find anything on it. Right now, my current algorithm would only gather stats off of a single server. And to do that, you'd almost have to be running the server yourself, because it is its own program - not a patch. Ideally, it would be fully integrated into the game via some kind of patch and it would gather data from different servers and compile it onto a single site.

I'm keeping all this in mind, while also realizing that with any programming task, you have to focus on the basics before you add the bells and whistles. Only with the support of many, many people will it ever get mentioned ina magazine - I've done some programming here and there, but I'm a mathematician, not a programmer. I'm doing this because I personally think it would be fun. I spent hours looking for it and decided 'hey why don't I just do it myself?'. I think it will enrich the Halo CE Community - maybe not revive it, but it will make it more fun for the people who still play, if nothing else.

I do think if I could make compile all stats from all the CE servers on one site and run as a patch on CE, that it would seriously kick ass.

You guys have been really great about supporting the project. Please keep it up - I'm also getting some support from the guys on the Gearbox Forums for Halo CE. Hopefully, this thing will snowball, but if nothing else, it'll be fun.

I'm sorry for jumping down anybody's throat in this thread. I really would like whatever advice and criticism you guys have for this project. If you have any ideas, Mr. B., lay 'em on me.

Well I am assuming they will have to get permission from Gearbox. If I was going to use the maps, I would get permission just to be safe. Make it appealing... I can't think of much now. Maybe make a flap thing with Halo 2 on one side and CE on the other and then... I dunno. There would have to be some good screenshots. Good user created maps. It will take some thinking.
