did i miss that one sentence where it was mentioned that something was burying itself?

  • 08.03.2006 8:42 PM PDT

Phoenix is dead, long live Phoenix!
Is it?

Posted by: soulguard
Yes, it was the Ark.

I guess I should ask all of you, why you believed it was a Seed Ship?

~soulguard

Well we know for certain that the seed ship was on earth at that time due to IIWYH. But we didn't know where the ark was until the halo trailer came out. You yourself said that you would stay away from the location of the ark until it was known. Which if I remember correctly would have been halfway through the story.

Also I thought that the ark would have buried itself quicker than the time it obviously took to be buried. Since Elena wanted the ark to remain secret she would not have let the ark bury itself in public view for so long where it would be spotted. Unless she didn't realise how long it took to bury itself. (I presumed it would have buried itself in atleast one night.)

Yeah just the fact that I thought the ark had been buried for a long time before Elena met the grandmaster. Thus the only thing left to bury itself would have been a weapon or seed ship. Henceforth I presumed Seedship due to its tie-in with IIWYH.

I think so... here might be the stuff you missed.

Posted by: soulguard
All seems okay so far... I guess everyone is content.

Highland Brute: pretty good but how did the watchmen find the ark in order to bury it didn't elena send it away ? She did send it away. Yet, at the end of the story we find out that Narmer, is "somehow" manipulating things from behind the scenes. His grip over Egypt (mergeing upper and lower Egypt) makes him a powerful leader during this time period. He is also one of the Grandmaster's descendants. Under him are Jacob, and Michael. Michael was the Grandmaster's disciple and personal bodyguard, yet she was unaware of his loyalty to her son. The Ark was found as it was burying itself near the grandmaster's village. Michael knew of its location and since he survived the battle, he most likely told Narmer... and the rest is history.

More questions?

My busy schedule, and lack of free time has spawned a slow down in the edit of "If I Were Your Hero". None of the story elements will change, though I am working on an extended background story for Eric, Kim, Melanie and Rose. A look into their college days before they joined the military.

But again, I'm freaking busy. Hopefully things will slow down next week. The edit will be posted in PDF only. As will "Stand Five Feet High."

More info Soon.

“But I will for their sakes remember the covenant of their ancestors, whom I brought forth out of the land of Egypt in the sight of the heathen, that I might be their God..."

Hey Soulgaurd. Thanks to the recent "Search" function (THANK YOU BUNGIE) I can actually find this thread.

I was thinking about something that I think you alluded too, but purposly avoided regarding the difference between the Masterchief (or current Spartans) and the original Reclaimers per this story.

Aside from the scientific or Spartan specific gene alteration, one distinct difference between the Reclaimers and John is the race of each. Like I just stated, I think you purposely avoided even bringing this or this subject up in your story (since it trancends race greatly), but in terms of genetic differences on why John (the MC) does not share nearly the same level of reclaimer traits.

Along these lines, I really feel that we can conclusively state that Kelly, who apparently has original gene traits (perhaps more "pure"?), is of African decent!

Why is race important, well it is not directly, but it may inch open the cavern of mystery surrounding the Reclaimer history a half-an-inch more.

Thoughts? *P.S. To certain members, no one is interested in hearing any comments with racial in-equality jibes or slander. Keep your racism to yourself*

Rampant, long time no words.

Hmmm... good points as usual. The race subject was something that was in the back of my head. I never wanted to label Elena, though I wanted it clear that she was of Egyptian decent. Historically, they are darker.. not quite black, yet clearly not white. What this does hint at is that "Perhaps" the Reclaimers are darker in skin tone.

What I'm getting at is simply what Bungie has built this franchise upon. Everything seems to evolve around Africa. To say that humanity "restarted" in Africa, would mean that reclaimers were dark skinned. Highly speculative, but history has shown that humanity spread from Africa... and expanded outward.

The connection with Kelly wouldn't be this direct. The Halo novels have yet to clearly label her as black, white, hispanic, or asian... she is simply the fastest spartan. (Don't quote me, but I am re-reading them to be sure).
"Along these lines, I really feel that we can conclusively state that Kelly, who apparently has original gene traits (perhaps more "pure"?), is of African decent!" So yes. Now as far as skin tone, I'm not sure. I would love to say that Kelly is Pure African... but it is hard to do that. Simply because of how much mystery is surrounding Kelly.

In my story she is the last (recorded) Pure blooded Reclaimer. But in official Canon, we don't know anything about her. Looking back at how important Kelly has been to the Spartan Program, being kidnapped by Halsey, surviving an attack from two Hunters on Reach... and still shrouded in mystery.

In my story, yes Kelly has direct ties to the Reclaimers and, as you've labeled, would be African decent. Though, through thousands of years of reproducting, it is hard to say if she looks African. Though it would be really cool if in the next Halo Novel they give us a clear look into who Kelly is.

And as for the cavern beneath Camp Eden... hehe. You'll have to wait on that. Though it is connected to the Reclaimers, but I won't say "how" just yet.

Hope this helps. Anything else?

“But I will for their sakes remember the covenant of their ancestors, whom I brought forth out of the land of Egypt in the sight of the heathen, that I might be their God..."

It looks like our mystery regarding the cavern (if memory serves) will be filled in a little bit more: The Next Halo Novel: Ghosts of Onyx The announcement of the new novel also heralds the fact that (at least) two other Halo novels will be published by Tor, and those will have some very exciting news attached to them, but we'll tell you more about that much later. Two MORE books!

And yah, nice to hear from you as well. Not a whole lot of things going on in this world (halo) at the moment and in the ending's of GotLK I was in the middle of renovation and moving which took all my time and certainly is not a reflection of your fantastic ending. Great little inclusion of your story in your story! As to Kelly, no matter the color, I bet she's one big, buff hotty.

I guess now we (fans of yours) can look forward to December being a month full of Fanfiction from Soulguard! Quite a Christmas present indeed. Speaking of which, do you maintain a blog or something that can fill in some of the gaps between readings (besides inane threads like "the last greatest thread about easter eggs, glitches and halo7 weapons")?

Oh yah, just noticed Nylund lives 25 minutes from here. I wonder if he ski's at Alpental? Doubtful...

Homepage

Seeing that my thread is slowly dieing, and thanks to Rampant Truth sparking a need for me to do a little research, I am going to put together a little list of things that are need to know.

This is unlike Mr_Clarks little questionnaire, but more of a "Side Trilogy did you know". I will start in order according to timeline.

Pre-History
* The "Prophets" were called "Law Keepers" within the Forerunner Empire.

* The Reclaimers were made aware of the Law Keepers betrayal during the final days of the Flood-Forerunner War.

* After the war, only two human/Reclaimers were left: Litran and Bitran. They, with the aid of the Ark, recreated humanity.

* The Seed ship was activated, and thusly repopulated the universe with all "selected" members of the Empire. The Law Keepers adjusted the Seed ship so that their race would "retain" their memories.

* The Ark was preprogrammed to land on "Dessaranth", the onetime home of Humans, it had been destroyed when the second moon crashed into the planet. The Ark repaired the atmosphere making it habitiable once again. Litran and Bitran renamed it,"Earth".

* The Ark was used by the Reclaimers as a training ground. Only one Reclaimer was allowed to train within it every generation. They not only learned combat, but they also learned the entire history of the Forerunner Empire.

* For several thousand years, the Reclaimers guarded the Ark and kept it secret from "normal" humans. It's secret was never revealed. The last reclaimer to protect the Ark was Elena. The Ark had been moved 3 times in the course of a hundred thousand years. Elena did not train any of her children to be Reclaimers, but the soldier gene continued throughout her decendants. Only female could pass on the gene, men could display the gene's traits, but they could not pass it on to their children.

Pre Halo Timeline
* One of the selected children of the Spartan II program is Kelly, a decendant of Elena; the last true Reclaimer. Doctor Catherine Halsey, Project leader, declined her as a candidate because of her families lineage and political influence. However, to her surprise, her family requested that she be placed into the project. Kelly's mother dissaproved, but her family found them and Kelly was trained as a spartan.

Halo Timeline
* Kelly meets John at the Reach training facility. They share a common bond, unknow to them both. Doctor Halsey is aware of their unique genetic makeup, and that they are "special". It is unknown at this time, that most of the Spartan's are in some way connected to the Reclaimers. Most are off branch decendants of Elena. (or some of the Watchamen)

* The combined intellect of Siren and Cortana, find a way to travel back in time and upload themselves into a Military ship. They force the ship to jump to a nearby Halo, hoping to stop the Covenant from finding humanity and saving John and Eric Raynord. They're attempt to destroy the lone ship is a failure and the Covenant learn the location of Harvest. The Human-Covenant war begins as the ship finds Harvest.

* Young Eric Raynord, Kim Peters, Melanie Peters, and a group of their friends, enlist in the UNSC to help fight the alien threat to humanity.

* A world wide draft is begun on Earth, after several colonies are wiped out by the Covenant. Everyone who is able to fight is called into the military to begin prepping Earth for it's defense, in case the Covenant somehow find Earth. The "Cole-Protocal" is created. Roselyn Santos is drafted, but thanks to her father's political connections, she is rejected from the military and told to continue her Lacross Career. She becomes world famous but feels that she has to do something for humanity besides be a destraction from the war. Using her Engineering degree she joins a Weapons company; "PCI Industries". The company is selected by ONI to build the MJOLNIR Mark, V battle armor.

* Eric, Kim, and Melanie enlist in the “Enhance Marine Program” or EaMP on Troy. It is actually a coverup program for Colonel Ackerson's Spartan III research grant. They survive the surgical portion though a lot of their friends do not. They are then elevated to the rank of ONI Special Operations; Codenamed "Black Ops". Under the ever watchful eye of ONI, the Black Ops run secret spy missions on the Covenant. They snuck onto human worlds that were "glassed" by the covenant and watched as they dug up forerunner artifacts.

* Releasing that traveling in time was a big error, Siren and Cortana create a new path in History by altering certain events. Cortana unknowingly takes the Pillar of Autumn to Halo, and with the aid of the chief they find a way to unleash the flood, after realising the the Covenant had found a way to contain them. Cortana is unaware of these acts, but somehow conscious that she has done this before. She knows that sacrifices will need to be made if humanity is to survive the events that are about to transpire.

* Troy is attacked by the Covenant. The Black Ops are in range to assist in the evacuation. While attempting to protect hundreds of civilians from the Covenant, severall black ops are killed, including Senior Chief Petty Officer Kim Peters; the squad leader.

* The Chief arrives at Alpha Halo.

* The Black Ops repel boarders after escaping Troy, and then seperate in Eric's attempt to save his last friends. They are all repositioned on Earth within the Marine Core. Eric is stationed at a desk job overseeing the security measures for the MJOLNIR Mark VI. He is once again reunited with Roselyn Santos.

* Alpha Halo is destroyed. The Chief groups up with the few survivors and return to Reach. They meet up with several surviving Spartans, including Kelly and Doctor Halsey. Halsey and Kelly soon go missing, as the Chief and the others discover that the Covenant have found Earth. They encounter the "Unyielding Hierophant", the base of operation for the Prophet of Regret's fleet. They destory it and slow down the Covenant's attack on Earth.

* The Mark VI is approved by ONI after several tests by a retired Spartan.

* The Chief recieves the Mark VI armor.

* Upgrades to the Mark VI weapons systems are demanded by ONI, after the Chief does several "Field missions" to see what the Covenant are up to since the destruction of the Hierophant. The Master Chief returns to Cario station after the quick Mission and finds that a ceremony is about to begin.

* Halo 2 begins.

--More coming soon---

Let the speculation begin. ^_^

yeah, I saw that and nearly wet myself. ... nearly. I was actually hoping it would be closer to September, but November isn't too far away.

*Looks at calender* sigh

The title has thrown me for a loop though. "Ghosts of Onyx"? Generally the title has referenced something in the Halo verse, so if this is staying true to the cause, what is Onyx?
-Fall of Reach
-The Flood
-First Strike
-Ghosts of Onyx

"Ghosts" would mean something of the past, returning to haunt the present. But Onyx? Is it a world, a ship, a crystal... a worn out shoe?

I currently don't have a straight Halo blog, unless you count this thread. I had thought about it, but seeing that I don't get much activity here I haven't been able to justify a blog. I do have a myspace site... but then again, who doesn't. lol It's mainly for my random fussing, nothing great.

Ghosts of Black? What the hell?

I can't imagine anyone in their right mind naming a planet Onyx, or a ship, or even a crystal. So I'll cast my vote for a shoe as well.

Haahaa... that's actually pretty good Mr_Clark. Don't fall into the trap like everyone else. Avoid Myspace at all costs.

And since everyone agrees... Onyx is a worn out shoe. By the gods, how can the Master Chief defeat something that can not die!? A worn out SHOE shall be the end of hte chief and the covenant and the flood.

Oh well.

Well that stinks.

(great rundown of events. It helps to have you do this sort of run through since you have it all right in front of you in mind and on paper. For the rest of us, lest we take a course in "Late, Great Halo (fan) Fiction" it is hard to combine a few of the details and facts, IN ORDER! This should be referenced in your first post of your next chapter / book in my opinion. It will certainly help the theorists and fans alike.

As to a "Dieing thread", I am pretty sure Clark would trade all of his posts in his thread with your in a heartbeat.

glad you liked it.

The chief will always have a special place in my heart, yet he isn't going to be involved in the Side Trilogy. The chief was present in the last 3 chapters of "If I were your hero", and he will also be in the first 2 chapter of book 3; "The path of Reclamation". But that will be about it.

The Halo side Trilogy focuses mainly on the effects of the Chief and Cortana's actions. The stuff that we don't see in the games or novels; humanities recreation, the oppression of the grunts, the political effects of the Covenant Civil War, and the reason why the flood spread. It is my hope that the Side Trilogy would be enjoyed by everyone that loves the novels and games and ponder the deeper mysteries of the Haloverse.

For now... the Black Ops, The Mirratord, and the Grunt Messiah will be the true stars.

well for the total ghosts of Onyx mabye this has to do with the 2 spartans who were to far away to get the armor with the rest of the spartans in the first book. IIRC Onyx was a planet so mabye they were stationed there and survived the glassing that took place... Or Onyx had forerunner artifacts so the cov didnt glass it, and the two spartans are acting in guerilla warfare.

A possibility, Bingbat. No hints or suggestions have been made as to what the story could possibly be about, but lets hope it deals with Spartans, Halsey, Kelly, Arbiter and the Chief.

On a side note, has anyone else felt this erie sensation after watching the Halo 3 announce trailer + the images of the H3 chief?

This eerieness spawns from the new "Hand/Wrist gauntlets" that the chief gets upgraded upon arriving on Earth. That was made clear, but the Bungie crew won't say why he needed the upgrade.

NOW.. I ask you this. Have you guys read the openning chapter of IIWYH? I'm just curious if anyone else noticed this ... "similarity"... or is it just me?

aeroadidas: Sometime following the release of Halo 3. Book 3 "Path of Reclamation", will parellel the chief and Arbiter's battle to save the universe.

LaiTasha: Yup, I have to think that as well. lol. But it is pretty cool that I got the same idea as the Halo writing staff. In order for the chief to use new weapons, and have them work with his HUD, he had to have the registry in his gauntlets updated.

In my opinion that is the only reason why they would only change his hand and wrist guards. I don't know of any other reason why it is the only change made.
