He watches every Hodgetwin video they put up...on ALL their channels. He calls them the Hodge Triplets, and considers himself the 3rd triplet. He's started talking and acting like them now. Every other line out of his mouth "Thaaas some BULLLLLL**** maaayne" or "Gotta make dem gainzzzz". He calls his biceps "gains". When he eats post-workout, he talks to his biceps, "Don't worry gains, I'm feeding you. Daddys gonna feed you, gainz *kisses biceps*".

OMG SOULGUARDZORZ!

Lol, been a while. Damnit, why do I always forget about these fanfictions? Oblivion has truly consumed my soul, mind and body. And I mean the video game... not the actual place.

I was skimming this page and saw that you wouldn't be releasing your next fic until H3 is out, which could very well be late 2007. Naturally, it makes me very sad to remember this fact. Maybe I should read some of IIWYH again...

Just checking in :)

Hey Uberdawg, it has been a while.

Well, hopefully Halo 3 will be released early 2007... but of course, I am going to work on another story between now and then. I'm thinking of something Halo 2 based, but not Side Trilogy based. I have to write something, especially with the Halo 3 announce trialor, Graphic Novel and book 4 coming soon, all this media is screaming "write more stories", but that will be a few weeks away.

I have been sort of tempted to stop writing Halo fiction as everyone seems to won't more chief stories, and like Mr_Clark and Scorptank discovered, it is extremely difficult to write about him. This, and the fact that I am looking to publish my Original works, has left me somewhat torn.

I love the Haloverse, but if "HaloGen" has taught me anything, is that MS is very strict with their product licensing. HaloGen was an RTS being done by fans and distributed online via download (much like Halo Zero), I think it was free but I'm not sure. Anyway, what I've discovered is that people are taking this "Halo Side Trilogy" very seriously, and though I want to continue it, I'm also looking to move on.

Don't panic, I'm merely ranting, but after reading Eric Nylunds interview I've become somewhat driven to do something that stands out.. (even more so than this Trilogy). I guess, the true problem is recognition. The readers have always kept me writing, one of the reasons I even started working on IIWYH was the support I recieved from Clark, Highland, Scorptank, LE and numerous others upon the completion of "Stand, Five Feet High". But now that I've involved more then 600 pages of writting material into this story, I find the idea that it will simply "VANISH" into the growing depths of New Mombasa... somewhat frustrating.

Will i push for publication? No, not hardly. I want to entertain all of you halo fans with this story, but it just saddens me when I think to the future. Unlike "The Fall of Reach", I don't think anyone will pick up this story 3 years later.

Did I make this too big? Not sure. SFFH was basically an introduction into the Human-Covenant war, and then the hardship of the grunts and their plee for change. "Path of Reclamation" will no doubtly follow this style, but the story will be nearly as big as IIWYH. I love to write, but again, will I be remembered after such a task? Should I be? I'm not one to beg for readers, or for people to remember my name.

Mainly, I'm just ranting. I'll finish the story, without a doubt, but it does make me sad that once all 3 books (and the 2 side storie) are complete, people will forget it ever existed. Will Bungie recognize some of us FanFic writers as being the one who began to give them an "Expanded Universe" similar to what Lucas did for Star Wars? Not sure, but it is something to think about.

One day in the not too distant future, I'll return to Bungie and find that their Forum for Halo has been "cleaned" and added to their classic games list. All the Fanfics, not just my own, will be gone and lost into the depths of cleared memory; reformated and waiting to be used for another purpose. My lone paper copy of "The Halo Side Trilogy" will sit nicely next to the collection of Halo books and action figures as I move on to my other projects. The official Halo books will be remembered, but stories written by Scorptank, Mr_Clark, Sir Brillant, and all the other fanfic writers will be forgotten... frustrating is all I can really say.

I'm way too overdramatic today.

“But I will for their sakes remember the covenant of their ancestors, whom I brought forth out of the land of Egypt in the sight of the heathen, that I might be their God..."

All while reading your overview of your writings and the halo brand, I got the feeling that it NOT the grandier or the adventure or the characters (sans the MC) that is "missing". You make light of the need to make something that really stands out. Frankly, you already have done that.

Now, don't make me the one keeping you from kickin' it up a notch, because surely we all would enjoy it that much more. However, I doubt it is your writing style, concepts or content (such as character choice) that are keeping you from taking it to the next level.

I would first relate this to the challenge musicians face. Ask yourself this, why is it that 75% of the music you see live in your city is better than 90% of the music you see on mainstream MTV, VH1 television and the like in radio? I highly lean towards, #1. Promotion, #2. Circumstantial being the main contributors. In written "Art", circumstantial situations may be more rare, although I get the feeling Nylund is somewhat of an exeception and is a team player with additional talents and interests. Nonetheless, I have seen first hand the difference in a given artists popularity and public awareness when he or she has been promoted by a manager or music contract.

I am not sure what the writers comparison is to such "promotion" (also given the nature of non-approved "Halo" fan-fiction). Unfortunately I have to leave this one in your court. But, I can tell you this. It is nearly a crime that you and a few other select authors are only publishing in an active video-game enthusiast forum. Like you stated so accurately, it is only a matter of time before it disapears in the archive. It is not a reflection of your work, only the format.

Format, this is what I am focusing on. Aside from some kind of paid publishing deal you work out, you are going to have to find a more broad audience to share your writings with. The average 14 year old on a forum that until just recently did not have a Search function is not going to cut it.

I doubt it would be video-game or halo based in form. I can only relate to a few examples I give you below, all of which have lists of "top contributors" and "best new art (weekly)" which bring you a broad spectrum of art and photography. Alright, see these links so you can follow with where I am going.

http://www.photo.net (note: Not all content Work safe)
http://www.deviantart.com (note: likewise)

Click throught the "best of" or whatever the terminology is. From there, I have found artists whom I return to their album or website on more than one occasion, primarly thanks to fan-review and the attention given to each artist.

I am not exactly what format is ideal. I can say that your writing often steps outside the need to know the given universe. I think if content and stories were organized well, a person off the street could dive in and become enthralled with your stories (as well as the under-appreciated Halo universe) without having to be considered a "fanboy" as most are here. You might call it "Curb Appeal".

Now, go drop an 8000HP bomb on the world while you guard our souls. ;)

may I suggest "Lord of the (insert halo-ish name)" as your next title... no reason why.

I've actually venutered to those sites before, Rampant, and they are filled with talent. I have a few friends that post on "Deviant art" regularly. Getting to the next level mainly costs money, and of course a lot of luck... getting approval from a publisher/editor is HARD!!! And despite how i sounded, I love this community and the readers, and your 100% correct about this not being the best locale to get the recognition I'm looking for.

I guess a switch was tripped when a "trusted" friend of mine requested to read my novel. Immediately this friend became quite busy in Law School, and my Novel took a back seat. This marked the 4th attempt by my circle of friends to get my work read and get an honest opinion of it ... which is non-halo related.

The feedback I recieve here and on FF.net have been incredibly helpful, but like you said, it's not enough. As a writer, I love feedback, I need criticism (good and bad), and to continuously write. But aside from that I need to know that my work is acceptable. While I value the feedback, comments like "gr3at work soulGuard, you r roxors! can not i wait for you NEW chpters" make me feel good, but doesn't tell me anything.

Well, I won't go into it any deeper. I have no plans of backing away from B.net or stopping Book 3. But surely, I have big plans for the future of my writing. And to comment on book 3...

"The Path to Reclamation" update
Book 3 will severly change the flow of what is going on "behind the scenes" of our favorite universe. Somthing I've been trying to figure out is how to include Kelly (spartan 087) as a major player in my story, without jeopardizing her action within the official books.

With the news of "Ghost of Onyx", there is little doubt that Kelly and Halsey's adventures will be answered... this has become a HUGE problem, as you can guess. While I did leave their introduction into IIWYH "open", meaning that Kelly and Halsey had been together for several weeks prior to meeting up on Dorenth with the Black Ops, surely there will be no mention of my segment in Nylund's official telling.

So how to solve this problem? Surely, Kelly and Halsey will make it back to Earth and do SOMETHING to help the war efforts, and it looks like Nylund will make it crystal clear as to what that SOMETHING will be. Now I have to solve this issue. Kelly and Halsey pretty much stand out in IIWYH around chapter 14, and from their on they play a large role in the progression of the story. This means that I have no choice but to wait for Nylunds book before I do anymore work to edit "IIWYH". And of course this means that changes will need to be made. Kelly and Halsey made need to be dropped at some point in the story.

That's all for now, fellow believers.

“But I will for their sakes remember the covenant of their ancestors, whom I brought forth out of the land of Egypt in the sight of the heathen, that I might be their God..."

You know, even friends might deviate from the honest opinion you desire.

If I recall, your a TA at a university no? Do you have any students and or professors that would be willing to read it? How about getting in on the campus newspaper. Get a chapter per paper published!

Aside from that, there has to be many resources for review. I think the most successful responses will come with a little organization and focus on a set group of questions. Asking a general response "did you like the story" might only supply the "Dude, it was sick", which aside from ego stroking, does not get you anywhere. In game testing at MS, they usually will focus on very select and narrowly focused questions when reviewing with a particular reviewer. Your questions might land somewhere in the middle.

I am surprised there is not a peer review website for writers. How about reviews from other authors (than those on here)?

------------------------

Back to the SG Halo Story, Re: Kelly, how about a brief interlude about the (greater)connection of her "blood" to the bloodline of the original reclaimers. Something different than gotLK in timeline, written in a fashion that just brings up more questions for us to slather over. Don't actually go down the line of commiting yourself to a particular hardline theory, just alluding to it. Perhaps the notes and memoir's of one Dr. Hasley? ;)

Yes you have gotten yourself into quite a pickle. But do not give up hope yet soulguard. You might just be lucky. Indepth honest reviews is in my opinion the harder of the two to solve. The first one is all about hoping that it will work out ok.

This story has created such a hardcore fanbase, it is hard to post a negitive review. I am struggling to find a way to have reviews done. Are you able to create a questionaire on your website? If you are it might be a good way to get feedback about the specifics. Failing that you could always post one on bungie.net.

Wow. It really is pretty sad, when you put it that way. My fanfic finished up a very long time ago, and no one remembers it but me, now. Some kind of fanfic appreciation by Bungie would rock my socks off, but from a realistic point of view, how likely is it? They're bigshots now, up there. Seven million people bought Halo 2. That is a lot of people. And God knows how many of us wrote fanfiction. I mean, I dunno what kind of a setup (if any) they've got over there at HBO, but would it truly be fair only to recognize one site's (say, B.net's) fanfic over another?

Nonetheless, I think it would be AWESOME if Bungie hosted some kind of a LAN party/get together for the more prominent fanfic writers (you, SB, Clark, maybe some folks over at HBO). While there, they could give you swag and plaques in honor of your service to their organization and the community.

As for your fanfic in particular, Soulguard, I'm sure you'll always remember it as something neat and fun you did. And you kept our feeble attention spans occupied for many hours (which is harder than it sounds, and maybe you kept a couple of us out of drugs, lol). I'm sure I'll remember it myself for some time, though I can't say that my last words will be, [Old Geezer] "God damnit, son, Soulguard's fanfiction was the bomb!" [/Old Geezer].

People remember your FanFic, its just noone knows where in the hecks to get a copy of it?

Even Clark make light of the fact that HE could not get a copy of it any longer. Once again, like Soulguard, its not a quality problem but a distribution and availablity problem.

Now, go do us a favor and link us to your story(s). Kay? K.

If I had more than a few hours sleep, if it wasn't minus friggin' three degrees, and if I didn't have to go to work in ten minutes, I might be able to say something more impactful.

I always looked at fanfiction as a way to grow creatively. Obviously I've never believed publication of fanfiction has ever been possible, but despite that its still something worthwhile to a degree. Your under no actual time restraints when it comes to writing, and you get instant criticism (albeit sometimes not the best, it IS the internet afterall) on your work.

I started the fanfic route at a innocent and misguided age of 13 years, and seven years later (oh my god I'm old) I'm still doing it. I like to think I've grown, though I would say that growth has come minimally rather than exponentially. All the stuff I wrote when I was younger has essentially been forgotten, even by me. Its an unfortunate fact. Fanfiction doesn't age well. Universe's get bigger, stories end, and fanbases move on. A series is only popular for so long. Then something bigger comes along and snatches people up, like Halo did to me.

Granted I've decided to cut away from this world, simply because I've procrastinated far too long on doing actual writing, but overall I'd say that if I hadn't gone into fanfiction I might still be writing fragmented sentences and having stories about super-powerful characters (oh -blam!-, forget about Cyriacus for a second) that have hot sex every chapter (never happened).

I might have more to say, if I had the time, but I stayed up too late watching that crazy Wii stuff in Japanese, and my brain hurts.

Cheer up and keep writing.

Well we all know how important sleep is, Mr_Clark, but we also know how important the news of a new console release is. Catch 22, sleep or Wii... hard to juggle.

Thanks all, and Uberdawg, Rampant is right. You should leave the link of your story inside your Signature. You'd be amazed at how many people see and click it.

As for the story, I think it has left a small footprint in the eyes of a few readers. And I am happy with that. But as for the story, I'm going to stay away from Halsey and Kelly for a little while till we get some solid facts.

But if you ask me, it looks like Bungie is planting the seeds for something bigger... beyond Halo 3, but still in the Haloverse. As Frankie said, "3 more books and at least 1 by Eric Nylund" and that will put us well past Halo 3. I don't think the movie will be the last of Halo.

I read that book at work today. Haha, oh the irony is painful.

I'm almost 100% certain Bungie is going to eventually explore the history of Halo. They've already got the future down with the Marathon games, so the past is the next logical step. Or so I think, but I still have no sleep, so chances are I'm more wrong than anything ever before.

Totally agree Mr_Clark. But I think they may get away from Halo for a little while, and then come back to it... after they've worked on some different titles. Put out two non-halo games so that they can get a breath of fresh air, then come back with a new Pre-Halo game, without the Chief, non-FPS, perhaps about the Survival of humanity or something.

Lai Tasha, I doubt it will happen. Like I told scorptank, it isn't that I don't "want" to do it, it just wouldn't be the same. I hope Scorptank didn't feel slighted in any way about me not working on it, but after the first atempt, I simply gave up. The History of the Sharqui, according to Scorptank, was very deep and twisting. A very interesting tale none the less, but hopefully it is something that Scorptank will come back and work on in the future. I think it would be better recieved in his own words. I think he needed to get away from Halo for a while, and that I understand. If it wasn't for my side projects (comic books, and novels), I probably would have burned out on Halo as well. But I do love it here.

~soulguard

PS: IF anyone is a member of "the Mirratord", I have begun another short story within the group. It is non-Side Trilogy Related, but it is connected in some way, just not a mandatory read. It is titled simply.. "The Mirratord". It will be final contribution to the Mirratord group. More on that later.

That depends wholly on the way you view the life of writing... Fanfiction is basically... well... without the reward of wide-spread recognition (in a professional sense) but I read in a magazine that this kid who wrote a Harry Potter fanfic on fanfiction.net got praised into the heavens by J.K. Rowling for writing something very extraordinary in a very pedestrian way. That's the way it was written down anyway.... But if you're looking for professional recognition... well... fanfiction the way to find it. Especially since it's all supposed to be fun anyway....

I know a guy who got me in touch with a publisher, but then I saw I had a deadline to make, and all sorts of editing processes to go through before actually getting a novel near publication... really boring... I'd have to write more than two hours a day, no way. I think I''ll put my chances with the interpreting/translating business... they seem to need Arab speaking people....

Who? Me? Yes, I'm alive... how are things down here?

No Mr_Clark, there is no quiting. You're not allowed.

Scorptank! Sup? Your ears must have been burning, cause you've been quite the topic the last few posts. Things are okay, Bnet hasn't changed, unless you count the search feature, but I'm sure you've seen that. The same crazy people are still around, writing all of this stuff for other crazy people to read. Clark, Sir_B, RegOmega, myself... still crazy, still writing.

Whoa! that's actually really good news... sorry that you weren't interested in pursuing it, but that is the norm of the industry. I have a friend who recently had his article published in a magazine... a great first step, but he informed me of all the hassles of actually going to press. And that was for a 2 page article in a small local magazine. So I can imagine what a full blown novel would mean. Yeah, quite hectic.

So have you dropped all your writing plans to pursue the translating stuff?
~soulguard

  • 09.19.2006 6:50 AM PDT

I feel as though i've been summoned...probably not, but i'm here anyways.

Soul, been reading the last page of posts. MS Licensing is being a -blam!-. I can tell you from first hand experience. I've spoken to eric (nylund, drr), his editor (offhand, who works for TOR) and an agent. MS, for whatever reason, is not interested. And it doesn't matter if TOR is, was, or would ever be, because its MS's call. Unfortunately.

And I have to agree with what Clark said about fanfic, that its a great practice and growth process for writing. I've really learned alot from it, especially on the editing side (i paid enough money...ugh, now i've got a job...back on track...) and it is great stuff to know. To know that the writing industry, like any form of entertainment, really sucks and is hard to get into, regardless of talent.

Truth be told, I'm almost over fanfic's entirely. I have an entire sequel planned out for The Ark, and I know it is a much stronger and more powerful story than The Ark ever could be, but i'm still debating whether I want to pursue that or writing something else. The something else isn't any definite thing, but the fanbase on bnet is like a pool with a hole in it, and its been like that for awhile.

Still, the main thing is that now that you have a fanbase, you can start writing your own stuff and then try to publish it, and let all the people in your fanbase know. They'll go out, and if they like it, spread the word. Like a very easy and exceptionally fast method of advertisement.

Altight, i've got to get back to work...

Man, I feel I should almost leave this page alone. Its like being at a BBQ with the presidents of the 5 largest countries on the planet while listening in on conversations about what it is like in that role. Wow, I agree Rampant... It's like a convention of Halo Fanfic writers. lol.

Sir_Brilliant Same here. Fanfics are good practice, outsource to test writting styles and what not, but to see if people will follow our writings into the novel realm is a different story. It would be great if the folks here would pick up our books if (when) we ever publish. I know I'd buy anything from the great minds here.

Rampant Truth "Land of the Titans" indeed. But we're nothing more than fans of the Haloverse, and our stories have been runing the longest... so yeah, It is a monument to the Bnet community that all 4 of the big guns are on one page in one thread.

As to whom would be "Dubya"... dear god, I hope none of us. But we'll stear clear of that.

Scorptank A black out you say? Well, I can understand that. There are times where my mind is racing with ideas, and I write down as many as I can. But then there are times when I can't think of anything at all... hell, I even missplace my keys and can't remember where I put them (even if I'm looking right at them). When those days happen I have no motivation to write, read, or talk about writing. So I understand. As for Al Qaeda... I won't comment as I don't want this little thread to be locked. lol.

Fanfic's are fine so long as you don't get an inflated ego. Then when the bubble bursts, and a publisher looks at what you just placed in front of him, his face slowly twisting into an angry scowl as he flips through it, you realize internet praise only goes so far. To the edge of the internet, and no further.

But I'm a self-hating Canadian with a severe personality disorder, so no one should listen to what I say.

I've had that same problem before Scorptank. The way to solve it is to immediately never write anything ever, and just fool around for as long as possible. That might not sound like a strategy, but I swear it works, or maybe it doesn't. If I ever start writing again I'll let you know.

Mr_Clark, I am beginning to wonder if I should start taking you seriously. I worry that something has really upset you. But I won't go into that here.

Dark Spartan117, thanks. I'm glad you've enjoyed the story and welcome to the fold. There are more side stories over at FF.net, and they give a little bit more info about my side trilogies history. Again, thanks for reading.
