Reporting from the front lines.

We have sustained many casualties from the infestation. Flood forces have pushed us back by nearly a kilometer now. Requesting reinforcements, advised you bring heavy weapons and vehicle support. We are running low on our munitions as well as manpower. Wounded casualties are now a hazard to infection as flood spores are in the air. We must now use breathers in order not to be infected ourselves. Send help. We can not keep this up much longer.

I fear that even reinforcements will not be able to save this sector, but we must do our very best. We are in waiting for your support to our efforts. May our efforts not be in vain.

--Enroute--

We have lost three fighters and all aboard. Withdrawal from infection site was contained within one standard half-hour due to unexpected encounter with new influx of carrier and combat forms. Flood now occupy two-thirds of the west wall of the construct, and will soon move into the rest once it is discovered resistance there has moved out.

There is nothing left to fight with save our fists, and what we managed to steal from the Flood. What troops we have retained are in fair enough health despite conditions recently vacated, and we are following a heading tracking a last known calculated source of an encrypted message sent on this bandwidth.

ETA at current speed is fifteen minutes, twenty seconds. The Flood have proven resourceful in that they understand the placement and useage of ground-to-air artillery and hold a position between ours and the destination. Heavy damages expected, but there is nowhere else to go...

Be advised, all remaining forces. Our sector, Sector 6G, has been overrun. Do not send any reinforcements here, they will all die from Parasite controlled ground-to-air surface batteries. I do not know how they managed to get a hold of such equipment, we destroyed anything of value to them before they could take it. They have a large number of infantry forces, modest vehicle support from what they were able to salvage from the battlefields of past. Enclosed is an audio recording of the last battle's final moments we were just in. We are currently on the run, away from the north wall. I cannot stress enough that Sector 6G should now be considered a no-fly zone, unless you can bomb them from space.

Concerning the Flood advancement on the southeast border of Syria. Due to the Flood's recent cognisance on the use of Surface to Air weaponry, we cannot ascertain the flow hindrance that is plagueing the Euphrates River. It is certain that if the problem is not ascertained and rectified, the flow will become insufficient to provide any resistance to flood movement and will fail to provide water to our encampments.

I am afraid if the river's flow is not returned, our forces along the banks will be pushed south, as reinforcements from Kirkuk and Mosul just are not possible at this time. Our operations within BIAP will also have to be moved, possibly as far south as Kuwait. There would be unacceptable civilian losses should we try to relocate to Baghdad, as surely the Flood would follow. That puts our backs to the wall, to put it lightly.

We request that any available imaging be used to scan this area for possible signs of water buildup, and that a team would promptly be dispatched to reopen the channel.

UPDATE Final edits are being done to Level 13, I will perhaps post it this afternoon on FF.net. Level 14 is pretty much complete, and it is a fairly different story then the one you have all become accustomed to. This "small divergence" from the main plot will have a larger impact on the future of the story, and will tie in some things from the past.

A lot of you are not fans of the Elites, but man of you are. Some would prefer I stayed the course and not branch off this way. Well, this is mainly an intro into the coming "filler" chapters that I was talking about a while ago. During the last few weeks in July and all of August, I will be focusing less on the Battle on Earth and more on the Effects of the "Path of Reclamation".

Also, I was attempting to do something creatively cool with the PM's that most of you received. It was basically the idea of a transmission from Siren-Cortana, similar to "Fragment", yet this was to have more of a tie in to PoR. The website that was sent to you all (and I now realize that the link was sent to you incorrectly) was the original Side Trilogy website, yet it was taken over by the combined AI's. I will continue the updates and I will let you all know when the next segment will begin.

Sorry for the confusion.

Stay tuned.

Cool, I was a little confused there. I was going to ask if you were going to bring back anything from Fragment. That was a pretty cool little side... side story.. :)

Yeah. I am going to do this really cool layout for the website which will tie directly into Fragment. I'm still working on it.

But what did you think of the last section in Level 13? The part about the Queen and the Prime? Did it seem rushed, added on, or just unnecessary? I still feel odd about it, but I went ahead and posted it. It is also on FF.net now.

I will review over there as well. I don't know if it is because The Mirratord is still pretty fresh in my head, but to me it fit OK. I can see it being a problem for someone who hadn't read that story, though. Still, I don't think you necessarily have to spoonfeed readers on everything, and I think you can bring more detail to the situation between the Queen and the Prime as you go along. I thought of it more as a segue to that story arc, although I suppose if you have conflict with it you could leave it out and use it as an introduction to the arc in the next chapter.

Yeah, I had considered leading the next chapter with an intro, but as I thought about it, I felt that it would be too sudden for those who had not read "The Mirratord". So I opted for this little lead in at the end. The next chapter takes you right to the edge of a planetary battle, so I wanted people to be prepared. And even if they had not read the Mirratord, the next level is set up so that it is like an intro.

The one thing that was troubling was the idea that level 13 has this huge momentum going, preparing to attack the Brute ships, but then we switch suddenly. I did this because I needed to do a tie-in with the Forerunners "Path of Reclamation". I wanted to do this while the idea was still fresh on everyone's head, also, because and old friend is going to show her head very soon, and I didn't want it to seem too weird when it happens. The next three chapters are planned out to be very cool, and mysterious.

Thanks for the input.

No problem. I don't think there is anything wrong with switching gears for a few chapters. Vaseola and those under her are probably (I'm guessing here) going to become critical to shaping future events. I would think it understandable to dedicate time to her 'situation'. Giving the readers some insight there (I think) is necessary.

  • 07.06.2007 11:00 AM PDT

I agree. It is obvious that something critical is coming from her side of the story and it's better to put it in now, when it's clear, then to put it in later, when it isn't clear what si going on.

Actually while a was reading the chapter I was thinking what the hell had happened to her so for me it was good timing.

Soul tends to have lots of good timing. He's good at that. I just wondered when the timing was going to be good for her reinsertion.

PS- not a peep from the peanut gallery! Been waiting for something from you, Soul, what's the holdup?

I thought this was fascinating:

"Official Marvel Summary: The Eisner Award-winning team of Brian Michael Bendis and Alex Maleev unveil a new chapter in the Halo mythos. Master Chief is captured and interrogated by Covenant forces. While back on Earth, a star-crossed human couple tries to stay alive as every single thing they hold dear is taken from them. Earth is falling to alien invaders, and no one knows what or where the mysterious artifact known as “the Key” is. The human race is at the brink of destruction---can the bravery of a few turn the tide?"

Wonder if "the Key" is anything like the Luminous Key? ;0)

  • 07.09.2007 6:18 AM PDT

Lol, I believe the official key is The Index. If Soulguard's Luminous Key is the real Luminous Key (from the books) then he had one lucky guess there.

Hmm... I think "the Key" they are referring to is the same object that Regret was looking for, unbeknown to him, that this "Key" was needed to open/use the Ark.

Lucky guess? Nope.

Deep study and a bit of foreshadowing on Bungie's part? Yes.

Regret chose a location, oddly enough directly over or near the Ark. Fought with the full resources of his crew to defend the area, and then, without warning (and not simply because they lost one Scarab to the Humans), left the plan. I've been thinking that Regret took something for a very long time, but Bungie edited it out simply because they didn't want to spoil the plot of Halo 3. The biggest Plot hole in Halo 2 was why did Regret break the chain of command, attack without the aid of his other ships and then exit the system only a few hours later.

This, was the only reason I could think of , though I am sure there are other possibilities.
