Hi there,

Just wondering if anyone else has come across this issue before. It occurs under both Vista SP1, XPSP3 and even seen it on the Mac. Basically the issue is that when firing any gun (most obvious using the assault rifle because of the size of the flash) the muzzle flash from firing is sometimes just not rendered. I FRAPSed a movie showing the bug:

I have tried updating/down grading graphics drivers, clean installing, changing resolutions from 640x480 up to 1680x1050, turning on and off all effects (except obviously particle effects which need to be turned to full otherwise muzzle flashes are not rendered at all).

This issue only occurs when playing multiplayer, I have never seen it happen in campaign. I thought it might be because of my network settings in Halo but after trying every setting the same bug occurs under all of them.

My hardware is:

Intel Core 2 Duo 2.5GHz
2Gb PC5300
nVidia GeForce 8600GT 512Mb
Halo 1.08

Any one seen this before? Any ideas?

Thanks in advance!

Yes, I am a hypocrite, and I'm sorry. I really do mean well, but I'm not running on all cylinders.

Everytime someone buys a copy of Halo 2 Vista, a puppy dies.

Try changing your video settings between "30FPS", "VSYNC", and "NO VYSNC". If that doesn't work, set sound variety to "low".

Thanks n357! I'll try this and report back.

Hmmmm. Well it seems that "30fps" occurs more than v-sync or no v-sync, but it still happens on the latter 2 settings. Unfortunately, setting sound variety to low made no difference :(

Can't think of anything else, sorry. :(

Thanks for the suggestions n357. Out of desperation last night I went and checked out a few youtube movies posted by people of Halo PC multiplayer games, and I noticed the same thing on at least a couple of the movies I saw. Perhaps this is a longstanding bug that I (and others) just hadn't noticed before in multiplayer battles.......

I've had a lot of Halo PC problems, but this is not one of them. Sorry I couldn't find you an answer.

Looks like a lag-related issue to me, especially with so many explosions and particles going off already. It doesn't happen when you host a lan by yourself or play campaign right?

  • 03.31.2009 9:58 PM PDT

Yeah exactly. Campaign has no problem and hosting a game I see no issue. I do agree with you that it appears to be some sort of lag related thing. That's why I suspected the network settings initially; apparently the network setting that is selected affects what data is pumped to and from the client and my theory was this was causing the issue. Still, I guess it could be a lag related issue that is not being addressed even with changing up the network settings. BTW I usually get 80-150ms pings on the servers that I play on.

Lag might also explain why I see the issue across different operating systems......

your ping seems much higher than that at some points, as in the start, and later when you throw grenades. I think it might have to do with your latency changing, though i'm not sure why it seems more prevalent with the AR than with other effects.

Yeah the Assault Rifle just seems worse/more noticeable because the damn muzzle flash is so big compared to say the pistol or shotgun.
