On halo 2(and other competitive online games) It's come to my attention that people are learning how to boot others offline. I recently read a news article about it and Microsoft replied to it but I don't see them being able to help. Unfortunately I'm a noob when it comes to networking and all that stuff so I don't completely understand how it works.
Is there anything I can do to combat these nerds who wanna boot my team in the middle of a match?

that's really strange....I've never heard of that but now i'm kinda freaked out.

my advice would be to not sweat it.

chances are that if these idiots are booting people for fun, they are not going to come after you specifically, chances are one in a million halo 3 players :)

to the people who HAVE been booted, treat it like you would treat a normal booter, ignore them. this may be harder to do if they are "offline",(someone plz update me on how they can do this) but it says the same. just regroup with your friends and try your best to keep enjoying the game!

edit: it may be possible to put them on ignore list?

Your talking about IP flooding or ddos attack to knock out your internet or boot you from a game. It's a federal offense and if it happens you should contact your ISP. Otherwise your pretty vulnerable when you play online to these attacks.

There is only one logical explanation for this. HAX!

Internet Points: 4

It's called Host Booting. There are programs that can track an I.P. and kick it offline. In halo 3 when you are a higher level, you get Host Booted ALOT. there really is no way to stop them...

There really is not much you can do to prevent IP flooding. Basically how it works is the person doing it sends out massive amounts of data, usually spam data, it overloads your internet causing you to either lag out, or get kicked offline. The best way to think of it is like logs going down a river, under normal situations they flow nice and easy, when there is an overload things jam up and shut down. If you think something like this has happened contact your ISP or Microsoft and let them know. It might also not be a bad idea to avoid the player/players you think that did it so you don't have a problem with them again. Now it seems like it is becoming less of a problem than it once was, most people now would rather use lag switches.

if you have a secure connection(I'm referring to a router) shouldn't it take them years to hack it and overload your connection?

My understanding about is that they don't really hack anything, they just basically send more information that your internet can handle, that causes it to shut down. And because they are connected to you directly when you play (best connection hosts, all others connect together through host) it doesn't really matter how secure your connection is.

just wondering, whats a lag switch

  • 04.01.2009 10:13 AM PDT

A lag switch is something people use to force the online game to lag. Basically it disrupts the connection to everyone playing, except for the one using it. It won't disconnect anyone, but will cause everyone misery as the game will be next to impossible to play. Generally you can tell if someone is using one because they will be the only person that stays in the green the whole match, while everyone else goes in and out of the red or yellow.

What IP Flooding/DoS Attacks/Host Booting is, is basically when someone sends you a tremendous amount of data, causing your server to be unable to handle this much data, and shutting you off of internet. So basically this is how host booting works:
So when your gaming, your having a fun time and theres this guy, who is sniffing IP addresses.
Which means he is getting your IP addresses in the whole match. Once he has it, he moves over to the attacking application. He punches in your IP address and commands all the Bots to send info/data/packets to you. A Bot is a file that can hold server datas. Which is basically if you go on youtube and u look for keygens for microsoft live time and points, those are all fakes and lead you to bots. Also knowing how to host boot and those "all-in-on" programs are all bots. So basically DON'T DOWNLOAD ANY FILES FROM YouTube THAT SOUND TOO GOO TO BE TRUE.
Once he punches in ur IP addresss, you start lagging and you get kicked out of the game. Once you do, your internet will be down for a while, approx 10 mins at least. Depending on how many people/idiots are in his bot, he can take you out for more than 10 hours or more.
Once you get attacked, you'll know it automatically because your internet will be down for a long time. Best way is to pull ur modem or your router, not the LAN cable on the back of ur xbox, your whole router is the best way. People often think that having a secure wireless password will protect them, This is nothing close to this. Best way to protect yourself. Have Norton Antivirus Gaming Edition or Norton 360 v 3.0. Norton 360 has everything so a better deal. Also, If you know how to, try to change your IP address. What i mean by change is either to have a fake one/clone or make it hidden. If u change it, they would punch in the fake IP address causing you to not lag and you will have no problems. If you do get hit, pull ur router plug and contact microsoft and ISP, In Canada either like Shaw,Telus,Rogers etc. Not sure about Americans.

Good Luck and don't download files from youtube!
