Last night there was a Gearbox/Modacity reunion party of the Halo CE community. It was the first time I played for real in about two years. But enough about that...

I was shocked at the numbers of the 1.08 community. Only about 200 people were on (which isn't bad for a holiday, but still). Just for the hell of it, I switched the version of Halo to 1.07 to see the population, and then I switched to 1.00 (or 1.04, whatever). I was shocked by the results.

I remember some saying the population of 1.00 was greater than 1.08, but I never believed it would be so dramatic. 1.00 was pushing 700 players. Now I'm still in shock as I'm wondering "WHY!?"

Is there anyone here who plays the outdated, vulnerable version instead of the updated 1.08?

Does anyone know WHY people play the outdated version instead of the new one?

I really can't understand, and I've been thinking of an answer for hours. I doubt it's largely because of piracy because you can't have two of the same CD key in any server. And it can't be related to no-cd issues because the 1.08 patch doesn't require a CD to play. So what motive is there for people to want to play the outdated version?

hi jcap, it's needles from modacity.

It's because people torrent version 1.00. They can use keygens for CD keys too. Many people just break their CD and don't want to get a new one for only $20, so they torrent the first version with a CD key. Some people stay in 1.00 or go there instead of to version 1.8 just because it's bigger, they just don't even have a CD-key anyways, people they know play it, or they are too lazy to update.

But that's where I get lost.

When they pirate the game and use an illegal CD key, they're using only one. If they use a generator, they're pulling from a bank of like 20-30 keys. But the problem is that you cannot play in the same server if two people have the same key. So if the population was mostly piracy, I think the numbers would be much lower.

Also, you cannot even join a server unless you first update the client. The 1.08 update must be applied, and then the 1.00 exe can be used again. But why would they go back to 1.00 if 1.08 doesn't even require a CD? The same "one CD-key per server" piracy protection is in place.

I don't really know. I know the cracked version bypass updates, that could be something. Again, some people lose the cd, like the bigger population, and to get 1.08 they would have to get a new cd (i think), since cracked/ special exes bypass the updates.

Actually they don't bypass the updates. You need to apply the update and then overwrite haloce.exe with another copy. This is why I'm so confused why they would do that.

Halo is really weird. You can have all other files up to date and then have one different, and it will think the game is updated.

I play 1.08. Fixes and Patches really help gameplay.

Sorry but how do we access this 1.00 version once we have updated to 1.08? I cannot find that original file anywhere, so how do we run it?
