Hey all.

My friend (whos name will remain secret for now) was recently banned by accident (not saying who by either), and appealed for his ban to be lifted, which it was.

However, because of the ban, he lost his Heroic status. To some, it seems like nothing, but you have to admit it would be annoying to lose a title you worked for. Anyway, I was wondering if this could be implemented:

When a user is mistakenly banned or appeals for a very valid and fair reason, then should their trust rating be set back to just before the ban?

When unbanning someone, wouldn't it be a good idea to have an option (for moderators only, duh) to revert their trust rating to before the banning? It would mean that, for example, if a user posted in a topic that was being heavily flamed, but their post was fully relevent, but they were banned and lost X title by mistake, then they could get that title back easily and fairly (which was basically what happened in my friend's case).

Obviously this would only be used for accidental bans, and for those which are appealed for a not-so-serious offense.

Thoughts?

A word (or several) from Foman:

Despite their joking around in this thread, every Forum Ninja I know is very careful about issuing accidental bans for precisely the reason that Dropship Dude posted in his OP, as well as the reason I posted above (the member title "prefixes"). But accidental warnings and bans do happen anyway, especially in very fast-moving forums and threads. We try to avoid them, and we correct them as quickly as possible when they do happen. But it is unfortunate that, currently, even an accidental ban still counts against a user's trust rating.

I would like to see this idea implemented at some point, but accidental bans are such a rare occurrence that I would not think that it is a "high-priority" item for the web team.

I'm sure that the trust system is automated. So I think your idea would mean giving moderators access to the trust system, which I think is only in the Superusers' powers currently.

Makes perfect sense.

No longer would the moderator's have to live with the guilt of bringing down an innocent user's trust rating just because of an accidental mouse-click or two.

I believe it is, but all this would do is send some form of data to the system telling it to undo the last title change. It sounds simple, but I'll bet it's not.

Sounds pretty simple, since the trust system is in number form and Achronos said when you are banned your trust goes down to -1,000,000 or so, so it at least sounds simple, but if it messes up we might have the big we did a year ago when everybody was Mythic. :P

OR the automated system could be altered.
Bans that are appealed could automatically return to it's previous trust-rating, or close to.

I, too, have had this problem. Only for me it is because of a few warnings which were apologized for because they were mistakenly issued or from a certain moderator, who I know on xbox live, who does it as a [drunken] joke... I used to be Legendary. =(

Unfortunately the general consensus on this sort of situation is that user titles are meaningless and are therefore not worth the trouble of manually correcting.

Though I completely understand "your friend's" frustration, I'd have to agree with that assessment. It really isn't a big deal.

I don't see an exact problem with it; when undoing a ban the Master Forum Ninja in question has the ability to undo the effects of that ban, along with the ban itself. Undo the ban, undo the bad effects, mistake completely undone.

It's not going to be some "oh my God, they've got access to the Trust Rating!!!" situation as I see things. I think the system could just remember their previous trust rating and, at the push of a button, that trust rating is substituted for their negative trust rating from the ban.

If the WebTeam's interested in implementing it, I'd be A-OK with having it.

I have seen this as an issue for quite some time and I don't think it merits webteam attention.

When it comes down to it why care about trust rating? It means nothing. Anyway, the ban fades overtime anyway, in a few months if the user behaves it will be gone and he could even jump straight to Legendary, it's effects will almost be completely undone, as if it never happened.

Accidental bans are not really that much of an issue on trust ratings so with this in mind I see no real reason for a change, they are also often short and unless they are soul bans they fade very quickly. Plus I'm sure it would take some editing of the trust system's code and the way ban history works, I don't think the webteam need the extra work.

The Forum Ninjas of Bungie.net don't give a crap about the hard earned forum titles of the regular members. They don't care for something that MEANS S00000O MUCH to the random B.netter. They think it's NOT IMPORTANT. AT ALL.

I don't understand why people care so much about their title bar? Although is does represent experience and gives them possibly more respect than others, it's not that big of a deal.

Forum Ninjas ban for serious reasons, and the person who got banned should not have broken the rules in the first place.

The OP said it was a mistake. Although I know that the moderators do a great job on this site i am sure sometimes mistakes happen. Be that as it may, I don't think any one of them would own up to it, lol.

It would be pretty rare though to see a mistake from a moderator. I'm sure it doesn't happen a lot, but when it does, a Master Forum Ninja can easily unban the banned user.

His concern from what I have read was his "status" and nothing to do with having a ban removed. Maybe I read something wrong?
