Ahh its just a member title it really means nothing once so ever.

That's exactly right. It's just a long bar with your username, forum title, and changes colour.

I took a breather. Now where's my moderatorship?

Anyone but Foman. He smells like cheese.

I, frankly, disagree with disrespecting and disregarding other members' titles.

Despite the fact that none of this matters in the "real world," some users do place a value on their member title that influences them to follow the forum rules and contribute to this community. That is a good thing for Bungie, and it is a good thing for all of us who enjoy contributions from the community. And certain prefixes for member titles that depend on a user never having been warned/banned/banned for certain amounts of time cannot be re-obtained if a moderator accidentally bans a user.

No matter what you personally believe, anybody who thinks that the addition of Member Titles to this site has not been a positive influence on some members to follow the rules and contribute more to this site needs to have their head checked for stupidity.

Despite their joking around in this thread, every Forum Ninja I know is very careful about issuing accidental bans for precisely the reason that Dropship Dude posted in his OP, as well as the reason I posted above (the member title "prefixes"). But accidental warnings and bans do happen anyway, especially in very fast-moving forums and threads. We try to avoid them, and we correct them as quickly as possible when they do happen. But it is unfortunate that, currently, even an accidental ban still counts against a user's trust rating.

I would like to see this idea implemented at some point, but accidental bans are such a rare occurrence that I would not think that it is a "high-priority" item for the web team.

And I thought I write a lot...

I guess you won't mid if I add that argument to the OP, will you? Because I'm doing it anyway.

On the subject of the priority, I guess that the introduction of BuTube is currently taking one of the highest priorities, so until then we can't really expect anything at all.

Also Guns and Roses are the biggest load of pish-posh ever

So whats the process of banning someone? Is it a simple 'Ban' button, or is it a series of forms?

Completely agreed. I've noticed a lot more people trying to stay within the rules even if only to keep their member status.

I certainly think it's a great addition, and I can understand why accidental bans could be hurtful, or a bit of a downer for those who are sadly caught in the crossfire...but as you said:

I still feel as though some people may need to calm down slightly in regards to their titles.

  • 04.13.2009 11:56 AM PDT

Why would the titles matter? Just because you get higher titles does not mean Bungie completely wants to make you moderator, give you Recon, or other cool stuff. Quoting Yozzel, It means "that you know how to act on the forum and what is expected of you". I've seen regular Members become moderators....

Overall, no the ban system is fine and members usually deserve the ban.

Arbitrary forum title is arbitrary. That being said, the way the trust system works, it is not trivial to remove the historical entry of the ban. I justify it by pointing out that most accidental bans are the result of you being very near to someone else who got banned, and the moderator deciding you were collateral damage.

At any rate, the way titles work now is rather inscrutable - kind of like the old Halo 3 melee system. Does its job, but appears random to you guys even if it is anything but. I'm currently designing a replacement that will be more transparent and more interesting. Trust will still be a factor, but not the only one.

You really turned me on there. ;-)

I'll be thinking on what kind of design Achronos is going to make the trust system in the meantime.

The idea itself is good, but in my opinion it really shouldn't be a top priority. Yes the title bars are cool, but they aren't really a necessity for forum functionality, and I don't believe this should be a priority for the web team.

From what I have seen in groups there is an "unleash ninjas" button by everybody's post (for a moderator, at least) and when you click it you get a form to write what they did wrong and how long they will be banned for (3 days, 7 days, etc.).

There's a difference - I hope - between working for it, and feeling proud you earned that level. You can't slam anyone who feels pride because of their elevated level, that's not your place to judge.

Well I guess I better put some pants on.

I feel like I'm gonna break this thing!

What would you do if member ranks was just based on posts made, and if you get a ban it subtracts 100 (or something like that)? I'm 72% sure this is the case.

I'm not so sure how accidental bans can be made. Is it mis-clicking / thinking they broke the rules when they didn't / something else?

Alright, calling an idiot anyone who somehow worked for the title was a mistake.

On the other hand, there's nothing to be earned, ergo, nothing to be proud of. How did I earn a Mythic title? I'm not sure, but I suppose my join date -over 4 years ago- and my small blacklist history helped. That's hard work right there, I'm so proud of myself.*

I don't come here to try to achieve a certain title, or get a status, as some kids refer to them; I come to B.net to have a good read, check my stats and help other players.

*Yes, that's sarcasm.

=D... this is interesting. Any guess on the time when this will be put into effect? Jw. As for the OP, I agree with dropship. It would be awesome to see that implemented. Though there are so many people who say its not important, there really are quite a few members that seem to have turned a new leaf just to follow the rules and be active just trying to earn that blue bar. I don't care what others think, honestly, if I had a blue bar one day when I logged on, I would be ecstatic lol. Though, if I lost it, I wouldn't really be all that upset, it would still be nice to see a system implemented where that could be corrected. Would your new system be able to be altered like that Achronos? Or would it be even harder to implement lol?

Most likely it was one of those decisions that could or could not be considered a violation, but a fine line and well a judgment call was made. In the case of the OP's friend it just happened to be the wrong call. It happens, it sucks, but it happens.

Like I said before, accidental bans are very rare from Forum Ninjas, so this matter should not be a top priority to the Web Team. This thread really doesn't have a point anymore...

Makes perfect sense.

No longer would the moderator's have to live with the guilt of bringing down an innocent user's trust rating just because of an accidental mouse-click or two.

What is this "guilt' thing you speak of?
Good question. ;-)

Re: Achronos' new title system: Thank goodness. I'm getting a little annoyed with bobbing from Heroic to Legendary and back with no apparent change in my activity. Something more transparent will hopefully be infinitely less frustrating.
