Well, if you buy a yearly subscription, there's no monthly fee. Same with a 3 month but make sure you get a Gold account.

I hear that for Halo 3 (not sure if it counts for 2) that you only need silver and you can play social games. Is this true? I think my friend is just stupid.

Since organized communities are usually more enjoyable, you should take your time to read the forum rules to save yourself some trouble and help keep the forums clean :-)

A one year subscription to Xbox Live is around 50 dollars, which is the same as purchasing the service by months at a time. I personally like to use the yearly subscriptions, seeing as I only have to enter one code a year, as opposed to one every month. Entering codes isn't too big of a burden, but it's a nice thing not having to do so every month. With that said, I would probably go with a year subscription.

I'm unsure on the accounts that are allowed to play MM in Halo 2. If my memory serves me right, you'll need to have a Gold account to play online with others. Halo 3 allows you to play some social matches with a 48-hour/Silver account, but that was most likely set up so that users who can't afford a Gold account could still play some MM. It wasn't like that in Halo 2 as far as I can remember, so you'd probably be better off just getting a Gold account going.
