You might have heard this a lot, but it remains true: play on campaign and play it a lot. Occasionally, when you find the time, look up some tips and tricks on the various aspects of Halo on the many Halo websites out there, such as the ever popular http://halo.bungie.org. It's all about practice, researching tactics and tricks, and putting it into practice on campaign. It wouldn't hurt to hold a LAN party every now and then when you can, so you can get comfortable in a multiplayer setting. Hope that helped you on your path in becoming a Halo Master. I would sure welcome another challenge. ;-)

As mentioned before, you definitely need to play campaign. I couldn't kill anything before I started playing that, beat it on easy, then normal, and eventually on legendary. It is also very useful to play multiplayer a lot. Know weapon placement, where health is, and just the general layout of the level. I would also recommend (thought some hate it) that you use the pistol. I will be the first to admit that it is overpowered, but that's how you win.

As quoted from the Human Weapons section on Bungie.net:
"Newbies hate it, but pros swear by it and guess who wins in a fight?"

Everyone knows what they are talking about. Besides that, PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE. Try starting on Legendary. It may seem impossible, but after you realise what you are doing (and mainly what NOT to do), you will start to own on the Multiplayer field.

Yeah, legendary is good practice. It'll teach you what guns to use when, to asess the situation (which is important in CTF games), tactics, etc.

Also play people online that are much harder than you, you can learn from the tricks they already know and you can pick them up very quickly, and yeh campians good too.

Also, on your own, this may sound strange but on your own go and explore the maps like blood gulch, thats what i do from time to time before my lan parties just to find small hiding spots etc, it helps.

Yeah, I found a little hole in the rock wall outside blue base when I was alone one day. You can fit a hog in there perfectly! Another good thing to do when by yourself is scan the map's weapons. Knowing where the good toys are is crucial in MP.
