Introduction

Sol System- UNSC Destroyer The Afterglow
0610 hours, Februrary 21 2554. Captain Ron H. McCullen

Captain's Report

About 2 years after the end of the Covanent - Human war, not all is settled on Earth. Covanent left behind from the assaults on Earth are a major problem. All over Europe, North America, and Africa are multiple battalion strength strongholds. The UNSC has slowly been eradicating these positions, but it is taking a long time. After playing a support role for an operation in the former area of Paris, my ship was assigned on patrol of the Sol system. We came into contact with a Brute frigate. Luckily for us we got it with its shields down. It went to jump but then we ended that attempt. Due to a reactor malfunction we are en - route for Earth. We had to traverse via normal space to stop the risk of losing our ship from a nuclear detonation of power overload from a slipspace jump. It will take a few days to get back as we are out past Pluto.

3 days ago, Contact with Brute frigate

"Sir, slipspace rupture!" said Lieutenant Zorn. The burly man from Reach seemed fairly calm when he stated this information. Given he has seen space battles from the Harvest Campaign to the defense of Earth, Lieutenant Zorn would need an armada to faze him.

"All hands to battle stations." stated Captain McCullen. There was no urgency in his voice. The destroyer he commanded had a new linear drive for firing MACs and a fully functional energy shield, due to the Elite alliance. His ship, once out armoured and out gunned by the Covanent, was now an equal match for anything except a capital ship.

When the frigate appeared, he could only attempt to hide his laughter when his Nav officer, Commander Thrash, pointed out that the frigate had its shields powered down.

"Arm only our MAC gun, and fire two rounds, one portside and one starboard."

McCullen knew that the enhanced speed of the MAC rounds would go through both lateral lines of the frigate before the Brutes knew what hit them. Only the new MAC cannons were fast enough. An attempt to severe both lateral lines with old systems would fail due to lack of speed.

Two dull thumps sounded as the depleted uranium slugs rocketed towards the frigate. The first round hit the port line a split second before the second round hit the starboard line.

The impact of the rounds sent the frigate tumbling like a top, and with the addition of the streaming red plasma venting from the now ruined weapons of the Brute ship, the crew started to laugh.

"Hey who was working Weapons Station on that strike? I want to have a toast in their honour tonight when we get planetside!", called Commander Thrash.

"Ahh I'm not that great of a shot.", responded Warrent Officer Jake Dant.

"Bloody hell, cut the- that was not a great shot-bull! We all know that only you could have done that!", Thrash said.

Jake Dant was the youngest, and most skilled, man on the command crew. His knack for targeting on shipboard weaponry was recognized while training at Luna facility. Only he and a few others over the past century have been awarded the Golden Naval Targeting award while being a trainee.

The celebratory mood was cut short when Nav officer Lueitenant Sean Trice noticed the Brute frigate performing another slipspace jump.

"Captain, I advise we nuetralize the frigate so that it can't report back to its superiors.", said Trice.

"Good point Trice. Warrent Officer I want you to knock that ship back to where it came from, fire everything except our Shiva's at your desire."

After hearing the Captain's order, Jake had a few seconds of pure glee. Being able to utilize his favorite weapon always made him happy. He decided to light the frigate up like the Fourth of July to give the crew some enjoyment.

The first three MAC rounds hit the frigate right where Covanent bridges usually were, the dead center. Whatever was piloting the ship was surely dead as the third round went clean through the other side of the ship. This left Jake time to set up his fireworks display.

While the hundreds of Archer missiles were streaming towards thier targets, the automated MAC loader was loading a special MAC filled with Napalm liquid. This round went slower than the solid depleted uranium so it worked well for his plan.

The Archer missiles tore through the top of the frigate, sending metal up into space like streamers out of a party popper. When the slow MAC hit the reactors of the frigate, it caused them to rupture and react with the burning agent inside the round. The crew was glued to the monitor screens and window ports as red plasma and Napalm turned to a greenish liquid.

Green liquied raced across the expanse of the remaining frigate and ruptured it further, looking exactly like a classic Fourth of July firework that still goes on in the old D.C. district of North America.

"Captain my fireworks are over, and there are no survivors", grinned Warrent Officer Dant.

"I can see that Dant, I also see that my engines are offline to power bursts due to your slow MAC round. This means we can't jump back to Earth. We're gonna go nice and slow. Those technicians warned me not to use the slow rounds yet. I forgot to tell you."

The crew groaned as the Captain told Jake this.

"I am estimating 3 days. So until then, everyone just relaxe and pop a few vids into your holopads while on break. That's an order" said Captain McCullen.
