Prologue
I couldn't feel myself. My head was aching so much that I thought I was dead. I heard people talking, but I couldn't make out their words. I tried to open my eyes, but they didn't want to. "Is this dead?" I thought to myself, but then something happened that I knew could not be dead. A rush of blood came into my head and my eyes popped open with searing pain. I clawed at my face as I tried to stand and see where I was, but my face was gone, or at least my chin. I fell back down, muttering pathetically, and my eyes closed. Where was I?
Hell.
"It's alright man, you're gonna be ok!" I heard someone say, I opened my mouth to talk and dust rushed in. I thought I would suffocate and die then, but someone forced a bottle into my mouth and forced me to drink it. It tasted terrible, and I wanted to vomit, but for some reason I couldn't. My eyes finally opened and I was being blinded. I mumbled something that sounded like "Turn down the light," but it probably came out as "Twunduntelii". Someone seemed to have gotten the message, I saw a face hovering over me, it was a woman's. "Are you awake?" she said loudly. "Yeah," I whispered. She told me to sit up, so I got up and looked around...
"Damnit, Phillips, get down! Get down!" the sergeant shouted at me. I dove for the ground as a searing hot green bolt shot over my head. Dirt filled my face, but I got back up and ran to cover. 'We're outnumbered, we cannot finish the operation. I repeat, we cannot finish this operation!" the sergeant grumbled into the radio. "The hell we can't!" I yelled defiantly, and ran forward stupidly, firing my gun at the countless Covenant forces. I thought about closing my eyes so my undeniable death would be quicker, but I chose not to.
I was doing better than I expected, I had managed to knock over a few lines of their forces and get a few grenades into their lines, but eventually they got me. A pink needle stabbed into my leg and I fell over, but I never stopped shooting. I began losing blood, and my vision blurred. I saw other marines follow my lead and charge, but they were being killed by the tens. "No..." I tried to say, "Stop!" but the words never came. I collapsed into a mass of limp body and watched as my own squad was slaughtered. There was nothing I do. It was hopeless.
