I think so...

I mean, tree's don't have a brain. How would they know whether to have sound or not?

This is one of the oldest and stupidest questions ever. Like sound waves can sense when there are ears close by and if there are not then they say "oh there is nobody around to hear us might as well take the day off."

Yes, it makes a sound, because sounds are waves, and whether or not we here them, they are still there.

Anyone here familiar with the Schroedinger's cat theory? This is a part of quantum mechanics that deals with the fact that if no one perceives it, then is it really there? Do things only come into existance once someone sees it?

That phrase is a metophore, or however u spell it. No one is there. You don't hear the sound if there is any. Then how do you know the tree made a sound. METOPHORE!!! Are you reading Tao Te Ching perhaps?

That's true. I'd like to see someone prove the tree made a sound.

Ok, it's kinda hard to understand. I have a very hard time understanding it as well.

Here's another one...There is a river. A child could crawl across it, but an elephant would drown. Also a metophore.

But that's the point. You don't know that the made a sound. How can sound exist if no one is around to here it?

there's another answer... the elephant is so heavy it sinks into the mud at the bottom... :)

But the child can't walk across the water, it would also drown.

It is human nature to assume that humanity is central to the progression of time and the flow of fate. This world is far more vast than the influence of man can maintain. We are only a microcostic portion of every moment of this earth. Therefore, why should sound take precedence only for us? We are not that great. Not yet.

So yes- it does make a sound.

But the question we all can answer is Halo! If a grenade explodes and Master Chief isn't around to hear it, it doesn't make any sound at all. In fact, it probably won't exist unless the MC is around.

The sound waves pass through a medium, properly displaying all that a sound is and or does. Completely bouncing off trees, and whatever the forrest has inside of it, all the while decreasing in strenth. Again just as a sound would act. Just because it doesent end up in the final human "perception stage" does not mean that the sound does not exsist in a whole. Do the little bones in your inner ear controll the fate of the universe? I think not. As the wise excomminicado said, we are nothing and we are no one. Time flows and the world is as it is, Regardless of who we think we are. You are much like obbiquiet, an intelligent fool.
