Subject: Interesting Data on Swordflying and the Scarab Gun

This is more for long time H2'ers who remember swordflying with the original Xbox. This thread is about sharing some info I recently discovered.

I like to swordfly while wielding the Scarab gun, it's just fun for me. I also like to know why things work the way they do in H2.

Discovery: Once you grab the Scarab gun, swordflying is deactivated.

Discovery: If you are swordflying while grabbing the gun, you can then continue to swordfly throughout the level.

This is weird for me. Why would the Scarab gun deactivate swordflying? Why would the act of swordflying negate the deactivation? So, the only way possible to swordfly while holding a Scarab gun is to pick up the gun while swordflying. HAVOC is a crazy engine!

Of course, all this is not important at all but I'm just curious. There was no way for Bungie to discover this gun/swordflying relationship. I do wish they had never taken swordflying out of Campaign.

PS; I'm not talking about a sword-lunge

This is swordflying

And this

Does anyone even read these?

Sword flying is when you lunge at the enemy and press X right? I have no clue why it de-activates after that.

No, a sword-lunge is not a swordfly, per se.

This is swordflying

And this

If you swipe at an enemy with the energy sword from a passenger seat, then get in the driver's seat and drive away, when you stop and get out you will fly like a bird.

Yeah, that's why I wrote the first sentence. You had to be there. If you have the gun, you can't swordfly at all. However, if you swordfly to pick up the gun, you can still swordfly while holding the gun. The gun itself has something in the coding that takes away swordflying.

Thanks Sonic! I figured you and a few others around here would understand what I'm saying. The Scarab gun acts like a switch, pick up the gun and swordflying is canceled. It's kinda like Blackeye being used as a switch for turning off and on the snow in QZ and SI. Only with the Scarab gun it never changes once swordflying is canceled. Even if I drop the gun I still cannot swordfly.

You know how swordflying can work better with long ranged guns? My guess is that the scarab gun has absolutly no range (technicly, not actually lol), and that therefor you can't swordfly with it. I don't know why this would be changed if you're already swordflying though.

Damn i wish i never got that swordfly-killing updata.

Vic, where have you been? Haven't seen you around this forum for a while.

Update: I've since learned that it is the passenger seat sword-swipe from the Hog that is affected. I had parked it under the Scarab spawn and somehow when I got set up to swordfly after getting the gun it was useless. So I went and dragged another Hog up there and I could swordfly out of that Hog, while holding the gun. Go figure!

I thought it could only be done with a Rocket launcher and sword. The last time I did this was in 2004 though so I don't really remember how to do it.

Yes, that used to be the case until I discovered ways to get an enemy close. If the sword reticule turns red then you only have to sword-swipe (no weapon switch). That's why I like to use a Phantom, it's always red and never dies.

You can only swordfly on an original Xbox without updates. If you don't mind losing saves, you can get rid of the updates by deleting everything related to H2 on your HDD. I keep a separate Xbox and never plug the Cat6 cable into it, that way I can never get updates.

*saves thread* Good stuff :]

I used to do Sword-flying all the time in Halo 2, back in the day. I used this trick to get to the highest pipes possible in Headlong :]

Edit: And actually, Halo 2 didn't use the Havok physics engine. Havok was adopted (and heavily tweaked, too) in Halo 3.

I used to sword fly all the time. Mostly in campaign to get out of maps.
