What sets it apart from the other two games is that you are mostly on your own and on an object you know nothing about... and it creates an eerie atmosphere comparable to Alien because you know that there is only a handful of Marines to support you. Unlike in the next two, where you have nearly all of the earths military behind you.

Anyone else get this?

EDIT: The feeling was somewhat recreated in H2 during the Delta Halo assault.

yeah, now that you mention it, in the campaign I'm just at the beginning (the first time your in the snowy area). but, like I said, now that you mention it, that is true. especially when your on dead island going up the hill.... although, the worst time was when you have to walk though all those chambers in the snowy level, before you make the mad dash for the pyramid look'n thing ^^;

The whole environment has that feeling too. Even though there are covies, it's so eerily quiet...

  • 04.24.2009 7:41 PM PDT

It was meant to feel that way, and they did a great job of it.

I enjoy it a lot, even if the isolation creeps me out a little.

Yep, as I have said in another post I think Halo lost its charm when it was set on Earth, you didn't feel like you were the last few alive and that it all had hit the fan...

I get a weird feeling when I play halo1, because I know that online gameplay wasn't made yet and I just feel lonely. But the Halo campaign is awsome!

The OP makes a good point.

I get a very eerie feeling while playing Halo: CE.
The game is just outright creepy, and has a menacing atmosphere to it. I miss that because it is not present in the sequels. It gave the gameplay a greater sense of urgency and realism. It made you wonder what you would encounter next on the unknown fortress world.

Absolutely. Ontop of that my most favorite element of the game was the tremendous amount of mystery. Why was Halo built? What are these weird Forerunner symbols everywhere? Why do the Elites wear them? Why do these buildings shoot balls of light into the air? Why do the Covenant want to kill the human race? What does Spark mean when he says "once the others fall suit..."? So many questions for the fans to speculate and debate upon. What is there now? To much was revealed in my opinion...

I know exactly what you mean. It's just you, your marines, your enemies, and your weapons in a mysterious alien world, wether that be the perple hallways of the T&R, contrasting grey interior of PofA, or the desert plataus, lushoius vallys, ancient forruner hallways, or, my favorite, eerie rainforest swamps or Halo.
I do get a little bit of the feeling in halo 2 on quarintine zone and delta halo, but none in halo 3.
I think it's one of the things that makes Halo ce awsome.

Oh, and about the alien movie similarity

I would agree on this,

Custom game nights? Contests? Great staff? Active members? What are you waiting for, join The Human Military.

I think the other two Halo games have too much bgm playing. Halo CE had moments of utter silence so all you heard were echoes and the clatter of your footsteps when you ran. The errie silence made the flood seem alot more terrifying.

Yeah , the Pillar of Autum did remind me of the Nostromo . And you its dead obvious the marines in Halo came straight out of Aliens . Sgt Johnson was based on Apone , i mean come on this game was legendary .

  • 05.02.2009 1:12 AM PDT

I agree. Especially when there was Camo Elites. You don't see them at first, but you know they're there. So you slowly itch yourself around the corner to find whatever's lurking in your path.

343 Guilty Spark was just plain creepy. It felt as if you're being watched, but there was nothing there! And the creepy music mixed with no music moments, seeing those slaughtered Covenant, finding some of your Marines dead was just evil.

Si they don't veneratio mihi they vadum vereor mihi

I especially like the section in AoTCR, after the part when you can get the Banshee, instead go forward through the door where the Hunters come from, A Walk In The Woods starts playing, and you're up against a LOT of elites.
That is simply beautiful

I wouldn't say that. There wasn't really a way the games could continue that way without making them downright confusing.

I enjoy the second and first a third, but they are very different from the first in terms of campaign. Not in a bad way.

I was dissapointed that after Halo: CE, the other 2 games had no focus on the rings. Sure, you went ON them. But they didn't really matter. There was no mystery.

Halo: CE was great for its mysterious feelings.

Yep, I know what you are talking about. Definitely one of the better things about Halo:CE over the other 2 games.

yeah it was good. I liked the fact where it wasn't just hand to hand combat and the guns were actually useful. It was a lot better music too.

I also agree with whoever said "too much was revealed."
The lack of mystery and creepiness very much reduced the epic experience of the sequels.

  • 05.17.2009 11:04 PM PDT

Halo: CE > > Halo 3 > Halo: Reach = Halo 2

Good points. Everything about H1 was very unique and special. I didn't get that feeling with H2 and H3.

There's a word for what I am, but I can't pronounce it.

BFA, CCS - olde and bony & one minute musings.

Although a handful of people have said the same thing, I'll have to agree. That's what made Halo CE's campaign my favorite compared to the other two games.

Imma such a n00b today!

Honestly, Halo CE have better pictures... It's really bright and when you look, you're like: OMG!!! But well... it's not really the same at the outer games.
Also, gravitty should be set lower. Warthogs in halo ce are like flying and alwais on handbrakes, which is funnyer to control!
