Ok... first of all, not a bad effort for your first montage. You have potential...

But why in the world would you say "beautiful editing make it one of the best on the net!" about your own video?! No offense, but the editing was generic at best. The synching was way off in a number of places and many of the effects had no purpose. Also your camera work was shaky.

I don't say that stuff to be a jerk, but seriously... one of the best on the net? c'mon dude show some humility. Spend more time on your synching. Don't add an effect unless it's for a reason. Crossfades go a long ways. You'll get a lot more interest and respect as an editor if stay away from claiming your stuff is the best around... especially when you're just starting. In fact, I almost didn't watch your video because of what you wrote about your own work.

And please please please fix your aspect ratio! If you want widescreen footage and your card doesn't have that capability then set your xbox (in the console settings) to widescreen before you capture. Your clips will looked squished, but when you import them into your editing software change the clip properties to NTSC Widescreen... that will resolve your aspect ratio.

Couple of other things... if you're going to continue with the dynamic camera work, flying around for transitions and such, try slowing the cam speed down. It's in the controller settings and it will make things look steadier. Also, try to be original. I know it's your first video, but still, it's like all the other montages out there. BE DIFFERENT!

Now, keep editing. Watch some other montages, and work on a unique style. I'd suggest in your next project, tone down the effects and focus almost solely on the synching. If you nail the synching you'll be amazed at how well the montage flows! And don't forget about the audio.

Sorry if that came off as mean... just trying to give you some constructive criticism.

Peace,
Murph

And just so you don't think I'm making stuff up... here's the most recent montage I've edited!

Good advice, nice montage.... I didn't find anything to be "offensive", Sorry for the "best on the net:", just a bad choice of words I guess, as far as the aspect ratio my card can handle 16:9 I just wasn't paying attention to that, the camera speed will help a lot on the next one, which will have better kills. I just got the card less than 2 days ago, The spin Valhalla was meant to be taken out I just forgot....Like I said tho it's from old clips and I don't save every overkill-killtac I get, most of the clips I had were goofy/fails seeing how I submit clips to halo3fails. I in no way intended to make it sound like it was the "best" just decent editing. I tried to sync key points in the song with the video more than the beat as well seeing how I only had the few multi-kills to work with, only a few clips were newer, like the no scopes on blackout....

Thanx for taking the time to give good advice,

this is oO MURPH Oo

No problem man, glad I could help.

The one thing I would add... or emphasize... is the need for good synching. IMO it is the MOST IMPORTANT part to editing. It's not obvious when you watch a montage, but if you have great synching the video will flow well and have a great "feel".

Watch some other montages from different editors. Everyone knows Phurion, but check out stuff by Zola, Obscure Terror, and Pass The Word. Pay attention to how they use their synching, audio and effects and then try to emulate them... in your own way... in your videos.

The more you edit, the more you'll develop a personal style. Just keep at it. Also don't stress about gameplay... a montage is meant to be a "personal" highlight real and not everyone is a pro. As long as you are happy with it (or the person you are editing for) that's all that matters... not what the numbnuts at the MLG forums think.

Peace,
Murph

Thanx, I doubt front page tho I don't even know where to submit it to the font page It took me a min just to figure out where to put it on the forums lol. I'm getting ready to work on one for someone else I'm going to take my time on it. I made this one the day after I got my cap card and didn't spend much time on it, for my first I'm happy with it, except a effect I meant to take out and next time I'm going to upload it in a better format so it don't look grainy.

Awesome montage old friend =D
I thought it was really good for your first attempt, it was entertaining, interesting to watch and the clips were decent too :]

If you're working on another montage, I have plenty of clips that are worthy of a montage :p
Message me if your interested in using them or something :)
