It's very possible.

The only time the Pelican's employed (correct me if I'm wrong) is to transport units from some ground mass to another ground mass.

I don't think it actually can enter-exit the atmosphere.

LOL

In this day and age of technology, no, a pelican cannot be made. Give us another few hundred years, a couple of wars in between, and a superior alien race hell-bent on genocide of all people...then yes, it could be a reality.

I'm goinig to make two assumptions with the pelican:

#1: it can close the rear hatch if needed and thus can pressurize itself.

#2: The ODST marines we see in those assume shots of the pelicans high in the atmosphere would have their helmets (and pressure suits) on.

[little tidbit]Above ~12,000 ft. oxygen must be delivered to make up for the high alititude. Commerical jets cruise ~30,000ft. High alititude WWII bombers flew ~30,000-40,000ft. U2's fly 70,000ft. And ~200,000 is the USA recognized edge of space. [/little tidbit]

Whilst reading "The Fall of Reach" and looking at all those screenshots of MC and ODST's in Pelicans above a planet's (i.e. Earth's) atmosphere, i was wondering whether or not a Pelican could actually be a reality in the future?

I mean, it has a fully open Hull, which is fine within a planets atmosphere because it has no immediate danger (except falling out of course, lol!), and provides quick deployment of troops onto a battlefield. But, when it exits a planet's atmosphere, the heat that it will conduct would surely melt/burn all the occupants inside. And also, the pressure exhumed from the speed and velocity in which the craft is exiting at, would surely cuase the craft to implode.

Now forgive me if my physics is not up to scratch - im not one for lecturing the laws of gravity and pressure etc. etc., but have Bungie made an ALMIGHTY mistake in creating a craft not possible of flying, regardless of any future technology we encounter??? becuase apart from this dubious vehicle on which my topic is based, all other technologies for the year 2552, seem more or less fathomable.............or

am i wrong and is there a simple explanation for this???

if you think about it they almost are a reality, with harrier jets

the problem is their engines take up so much space that they wouldnt have enough room for troop transport anyways
the other problem is that they still rely on flaps and flap trim to turn the plane while in the air rather than the movement of the outboard jets with the exception of takeing off
i do agree that it will be at least another hundred years because they have yet to make a plane that can actually enter and come out of space more than once or twice without having modidfications or rebuilding external parts just because of our limited material access (there arent materials that can resist that much heat and pressure for longer amounts of time or a lot of repetitions)
