Last time I checked my media rights, it said that if you was to remake a picture making it look completely different you wouldn't steal it. In fact you would get new copyrights, since your pic is now unique.
Thats a bit iffy there, in the same way that if I was to make a halo clone by tracing over the images but then call it "Circle" I would still be breaching copyright. However I can't see anything wrong with the pictures really you're not selling them so you might just want that infamous phrase about created using assets from Halo copyright Microsoft.
Foman usually knows these things, see what he says if he appears
...stop using black outlines
I like the black outlines! Alien Hominid and Castle Crashers are both created with thick black outlines and they're awesome
About the copyrights:
You're right about the selling part. He is not making profit off of these pictures = no money lost for Microsoft (who owns Halo rights) = no problem.
On the other hand: copyright laws are per definition iffy. I am Dutch, Dutch copyright laws allow me to vectorize Halo images which gives me copyrights over the images I just made. American copyright laws are completely different.
Good example: Look at the Piratebay trials going on in Sweden I believe.
In the Netherlands, you could never be put on trial for what they did, since the copyright laws don't forbid linking to illegal files. Even Google could be accused, since they do the same thing as Piratebay did. Different copyrights per country make it an iffy issue, that's why there should be a global copyright law.
About the outlines:
Castle Crashers and Alien Hominid look good with black outlines, since they are an essential part of the graphic style. The the details etc in these pics (and many other "traced" images) outlines make it look sloppy. For instance, the Banshee would look better if the colors flowed into each other instead of being separated by black lines.
But this is personal taste. I think black outlines are fine as long as they serve the graphic style, but are not done when they don't contribute to it at all.
Example: this MR T piece I did last year would look like -blam!- if I would turn on black outlines.
But This piece would look a lot more flat if I would turn off the black outlines.
See what I mean?
