I've beaten the game on Legendary and am trying a more challenging thing now, which is to try and keep as many Marines alive as possible when I can on Legendary. If anybody has any tips or strategies on how to keep them alive that'd be great.

Some areas that seem almost impossible to keep Marines alive:

1.) Just when you arrive into The Truth and Reconciliation by the gravity lift on your mission to rescue Keyes. What a slaughter. The Elites with the swords...I gotta stay in good position to knock them out with the sniper rifle or my marines get hacked real fast. Part of the problem is my slow graphics card which really bogs down here with all the action...

2,) The beach drop zone of The Silent Cartographer. Part of the real problem here is bad AI the Marines have. They just advance right into their death. I can't seem to clear the area out ahead of them fast enough for them to live through it. It takes just one grunt with a grenade and half my platoon is gone. I usually have 2 Marines left when I reach the last 2 Elites and they promptly kill my Marines faster than I can say "SLOW DOWN!!!" Grenades seem to be key here, but my darn card is so slow that I'm usually lobing it at an empty area by the time the throw is completed when there is a lot of screen action...grrrr...time for a new card.

So if anybody has kept their Marines alive, in these areas on Legendary, I would be very curious as to how they were able to do it. Thanks. :-)

I'm usually left with four or five marines after the Silent Cartographer beach mauling, but they're all usually in yellow health. The key really is to get a plasma weapon as soon as possible (even a pistol) and get the shields of any elites you see down. As soon as the shields are down, whip out the pistol and shoot them right in the head once or twice, they should go down pretty quick. It's also key to keep throwing grenades behind enemies, because they run backwards quite quickly so chances are they'll end up right where you want them to be when the grenade detonates.

As for the TnR lift room, you're just as -blam!- as I am.

The first time I tried legendary Silent Cartographer I didn't have any marines alive, and I was on my last red. Read the bungie guide. Coordinating strategies with what the computer does really helps more than rushing in with them.

For the most part, I leave the marines for dead in order to make it though on legendary. But I can usually keep 4 marines alive once I'm inside the ship. They usually dies when i get to the big hangar tho. that sucks. and I've neveer gotten by the beach landing with more than four. another tough spot is the first group u come across on level 2. I just want to scream at them to stay hidden in the structure...I hop ethe marines are less retarded in H2. They end up as a liability more often than not in the first halo.

I had two marines alive on legendary. One had a full health bar and the other was on yellow. They made it thorugh the whole level of Silent Cartogaphoter. (missed spelled)

Truth And Recoliation my Marines never had a chance.

Thanks for that good advice! I'll try that and see if I can get more of them to live. :-)

3.) Another spot that seems real tough is with the Flood just before the entrance to the library after leaving the underground complex in the swamps. Everybody just gets plain slaughtered here. Anybody have any luck in this area at all?

Actually, I saved a marine in that area for quite some time. I was up against the wierd brown thing that you meet 343 GS on, desperately waiting for the game to checkpoint. It never did... until after the Marine died. Literally, it should have checkpointed and didn't untill all the marines were dead.

I could be proven wrong, of course, but that is how I think that level is programmed... creepy, eh?

I seem to recall that I was able to keep a lot more Marines alive on an easier setting before 343 GS showed up and the game checkpointed. It did seem sort of hit and miss when it would checkpoint though. Sometimes it seemed to happed right away when I ran up closer to the structure there. Other times it seemed like you say, that everyone had to die first. Or maybe everyone did die and I am wishfully thinking, heh.

How did you keep even the one Marine alive? I can barely fire my shotgun fast enough, much less keep the flood off of my Marines...

I have to admit i to have beaten it on legendary and its no easy task. You should try to collect all of the grenades as possible and frag there ass.As some that you use one try to have grenades next to ya to keep the c4 flowing. Now with hunters and elites with swords then u have to put ur self at the head and take one 4 the team. Now the black mearines the hell jumpers for sure could take care of them selves but they come out in halo 2.Just have quick wits a fast trigger fingger and u should do fine. The only other tip I have is u would need to by a modding chip and somehow find a mod 4 invinsible marines. The smart thing to do would start on easy and practice and work ur way up on the difficulties. Good luck!!:)
