That is correct sir. The Forerunners were named such by the Covenenant.

all that we know about forrunner, is that they vanished. We don't know if they are dead.

And he is "grateful to see that some of them" (now refering to the Flood) survived because, as he says, he and the installation were built, "specifically to study and contain the Flood." So, if there's no Flood, he is obsolete.

343 GS always refers to the Flood as the Flood... not them, their, or fill in the blank:)

Me: "OMFG, Dude... wtf!"
AbolitionofMan: "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to betray you."
Me: "That's the 4th time in this game alone!"
Chris: "Third, besides he had the flag I was trying to stop him, how was I supposed to know you were there."
Me: "I said, 'I got the Flag, don't shoot.'"
Chris: "Well those Wraith shots take a while to reach you."
Me: "You were right next to me, I had killed him and a minute passed before you decided to shoot."
Chris: "Hahahahaha, yeah... that was great."

"The installation was specifically built to study and contain the Flood. Their survival as a race was dependent upon it. I am grateful to see that some of them survived to reproduce." (343 GS in the Library)

"Their" refers to the Forerunners, because if the Flood got out, it'd be like releasing smallpox today - mass plagues and death, plus zombies to boot.

And he is "grateful to see that some of them" (now refering to the Flood) survived because, as he says, he and the installation were built, "specifically to study and contain the Flood." So, if there's no Flood, he is obsolete.

I gotta give you props for imagination, but Eagle 117, you're going out of your way to find insane ways to interpret things at this point.

As was already pointed out Draerden, that is inproper English. You cannot go from talking about the Flood, then use a pronoun to describe the Forerunner, (unless he just used the word in a sentence before this one and after the Flood), and then go back to the Flood in the form of a different phrase. That would be one hell of a confusing conversation because you have no idea what the person speaking is talking about.

But does he do it all the time?

He does. I can remember very well in the game and in the books that 343 GS always says the Flood, instead of using a pronoun. Also, it speaks of them like a virus and something that should be well-known to all of whom it would concern. (the Forerunner).

Oh ok i was just trying to spark up more debate anyways

How come 343 never refers to the FR as what they called themselves?

Perhaps because he thinks MC is Forerunner and so should understand what he is saying.

Oddly, since 343 considers himself a Forerunner he uses pronouns to refer to them. A smart way for Bungie to keep the Forerunners true names to themselves.

If you don't like our theories then don't read them. At least we try to expand on the game and it's storyline.

Perhaps he's talking about the OFFICIAL Halo 2 Speculation Thread.

You know... the thread that BUNGIE PUT UP that encourages us in the fan community to come up with theories:)

Eagle, I agree with your theory, but not with your classification of the Flood as a virus. In First Strike, page 243, Dr. Halsey describes the Flood as a sort of meta-organism.

Is that a thanks?

If so, then you're welcome:)

I told you I didn't disagree with your theory... just your attitude towards some in the community.

Eagle, he describes the Flood repairing the PoA in third person, talking about underestimating the intelligence, I don't know the exact quote, because I am at work and don't have the book in front of me, but If he was talking about Forerunner, wouldn't that mean that the Forerunner were fixing the ship, by your argument?? I don't think 343 GS has a specific issue with referring to the Flood in the third person...

You know what.... you're right on that point:)

If anything, though, this helps to show that the Flood isn't a distinct race; but rather, a changing, morphing organisms that takes the form and shape of whatever the host (an actual race) has to offer.

 • 07.15.2004 5:45 PM PDT

Here is 343 GS's description of the Flood:

"You can see how the body's been transformed by the genetic restructuring of the Flood infection. The small creatures carry spores that cause a host to mutate. The mutated host then produces spores that can pass the Flood to others. It is insidious and elegant. As long as any hosts remain, the Flood is virulent.

The last word used to describe the Flood in virulent as in "able to cause a disease by breaking down the protective mechanisms of the host."

With B.B. gone, the passion of Bungie.net has lessened.

<Grins> I knew Chaplain was going to chime in... if he wasn't, I was going to tell him about this.

Anyway, lets look at this, shall we?

-If 343 Guilty Spark was referring to the Flood (which, in English, seems like he would be), why the hell would he, an AI with a duty to activate Halo so the Flood will inevitably die, be greatful to see them survive and reproduce, hmmmm?

-If talking about the Forerunners, where does he get that from (another hint at the human/Forerunner connection that I still don't believe)?

-If talking about the Flood, why would their race's (they are a race) survival depend on the captivity, hmmm?

-If talking about the Forerunners, why would their race's survival depend on the captivity of the Flood (you may think its a dumb question, but think harder)?

Think on those.

Please note that I am rushed in typing this, and I will edit this post, fix it, and add things in later.

I answered the question on the flood needing to be in captivity on the first page

The host is not the Flood but just a husk for them to use more as a tool. Think about the Goa'ould from Stargate, they take over the host but leave intact their original beings thoughts and shape. The Flood however suppress those for forms that suit there purpose.

GS "Its parasitic nature belies the Flood's intelligence." That is not how you describe a virus, but instead a distinct race.

I also believe that the Flood is very similar to the insipriation they are derived from that is the Vang created by Christopher Rowley. The Flood is an omniparisitic lifeform. The Flood is very intelligent with distinct forms that it uses as the times call form them. If you read Starhammer series you will know that the Flood is a distinct race with their own gods, desires, and home world.

The Keyes form is a Host Master and has emmoitions similar to our own. There will be new forms in Halo 2.
