I am planning on having a LAN party tomorrow and i need to buy a system link cable. But i have heard that you can use the same ethernet cable people buy for xbox live to link the two xboxes together. Is this possible?

To hook two xbox's together without a Hub or Switch will require a crossover ehternet cable(same as the system link cable you can buy from microsoft) The "xbox live" cable you are refering to could be a straight through ethernet patch cable, and thus will not work between two xbox's.

Like klurejr said if you only are planning to link only 2 Xboxs together you must use a crossover cable and link them directly. If you wish to do 3 or more you would require straight ethernet cables and a hub. You do not need the Xbox brand Hub any old hub will do. You may be able to find the crossover or straight ethernet cables at your local computer store.

If you are just going to use this setup for xbox LAN parties. Here is what i would do.

Go to wal-mart buy the following:
1) router - at least a 4 port
http://www.walmart.com/catalog/catalog.gsp?cat=126296&pat h=0%3A394 4%3A3951%3A130474
2) network cables - for however many xboxs you are hooking up

this is the easiest way. plus if you ever want to hook up more than 2 xboxs you can. you don't need an expensive router if you are doing this for just LAN parties. just a down and dirty and cheap one. if you need any other help just PM me.

Adding on to the last post:

If you want a faster 'network' with your system linking for the Xbox's, I suggest that you use a switch instead of a router, it's quicker and more reliable. Especially for small networks.

true but honestly one small local network with only 4 xboxs you won't notice any lag with a router. even the cheapest one you can find. but if he has the money to spend he should go ahead and buy a dsl router/switch so when he gets xbox live he is all ready to go.
