Subject: War Within A Breath

We're not asking for more than this: help in retaining the atmosphere of The Maw. It used to be such a nice little place, no flames, not a whole lot of threads, peaceful. Now there's tension, repetitive threads [lots of them, too], many threads dealing with illegal activities - it's not the same, it's slowly transforming into the Halo 2 forums.
Here's news for you - NONE of the forum is the same anymore. Even The Septagon, once a lame, post-a-day board has been invaded. It's just a sign of the times.
I'd almost say that you have to allow a few off-topics in The Maw, and most have at least a semblance of relevance. We're a pretty close group of members, we all know each other, and there's not a lot of us. Many of us don't venture out simply because Halo 2's forums are way too chaotic and the others don't appeal to our interests. We like to talk with our small group, and we can't just talk about HaloPC all the time.
Same with here. But we wouldn't allow off-topic posts.
Ok, maybe it was posted in the wrong place even though I was talking about The Maw, but that still doesn't explain why things like THIS go unchallenged...
Thank you for reporting them. See what happens when you actually tell us that these threads exist? I can tell you that, in my experience, reports from The Maw are VERY rare.
Incorrect moderating. I have seen a number of posts recently that were just spam, and althought the guy was blacklisted, the 4 threads he created were still there, and unlocked.
What should of happened, is they be locked or deleted as there was no useful content in them at all.
What happened instead, you get teh inevitable people posting in them saying 'Haha, banned!' etc. Thus keeping them alive and on the first page.

When we see them then they are locked or deleted. However, the user may have been banned for another reason, and therefore said user's other threads may go unnoticed.
We posted the orginal thread about this, asking for help or some guidence on the issue. Not one mod responded. Im pretty certain a mod must have looked at it, because threads just before and after it had been got at by a mod.
The only guaranteed way to get us to notice something is either to PM us or e-mail us.

Reginko, I once was on the underground, and i DO know that you are an active, nice, pays attention person. You helped me install marathon! Agreeing with Mr. B, I do believe there will be a list of who to PM when we see stuff, and who not to.

Well the times can go... Well, lets not get into what the times can go and do. The times are what killed the Native American culture. The times? Don't get me started on the times. And personally, I don't think that's lame. It's better than what Zanzibar has turned into. And if the maw turns into that? The very thought makes me shudder.

Goweb, we did PM the mods that were once active in The Maw. It's rather odd that we don't see them anymore, but... I can't really do much about that. It's probably that you didn't get the PM's.

Alright, there's my rebuttal.

yout3

PS Do any of you actually play Halo PC/CE anymore?

It is the soldier, not the reporter, who has given us freedom of the press. It is the soldier, not the poet, who has given us freedom of speech. It is the soldier, not the campus organizer, who has given us the freedom to demonstrate. It is the soldier, not the lawyer, who has given us the right to a fair trial. And it is the soldier who salutes the flag, who serves the flag, whose coffin is draped in the flag that allows the protester to burn the flag.Father Dennis Edward O'Brien, USMC

The Septagon is still a safe haven for mature threads. Thats why it was reccomeneded that this post be put here.

And you say how the other forums have gone to hell, why Dont you have the power to stop it? Like drop a hammer.

Could you consider 20 threads aboout MLG spam? And just get rid of all of them?

Ps. Thanks for taking the time to talk to us Goweb, sometimes I dont think you guys care

Actually, the Septagon is a "safe haven" for threads which come under the following description:

Posted by: Sketchfactor
The official forum of the 7th Column and our Community. Go here to talk about community stuff, Bungie.net and world domination.

If you start a thread here about something other than that, it will be locked or deleted, no matter how mature the discussion is.

That would stop it.

And now a Toji rant.

ehemm.

I am not a Moderator on these forums

I do not know what it's like to be one in this situation

I spent alot of time trying to find out the proper way to go about things on this forum

I did not wirte the rules

I am expected to follow them

I don't not infringe on, or complain about Bungie.net staff's decisions [eg Chocie of moderators, locks and blacklistings]

Because I did not make the rules, I don't doubt wether they are correct or biast.

This is not my site

I don't own it

I don't pay for the hosting

I don't help Archronos service it

It is not m place to complain

People need to realise that this service is free. When the people who are lending there services decide to blacklist someone they have every right to. It's There's . Users cannot honestly say that the Moderators choices are wrong because they have NO say in the way the site is run. It is Bungie.net's staff who choose which way they mod. I think even the most respected users need a reminder of that sometimes.

Well, not really, considering it's volunteer work aside from our "real" paid jobs (or our "real" unemployment, as the case may well be).

It was a cold day near the southern base in Blood Gulch. Cortana and I were relaxing over a game of Go Fish, WHEN OUT OF NO WHERE 700 BANSHEES CAME FLYING IN!!! I GRABED MY SPARTAN LASER AND LET HELL REIGN DOWN UPON THEM. I HOPPED IN THE NEAREST WARTHOG AND TOLD CORTANA TO GET IN.

In the Code of Conduct-

Bungie controls everything. You have no rights. Play nice.

Cougar- He was joking.

Ahem. Stop complaining about the spam you're all creating. Advertising threads is against the rules. And what war are you talking about? A war to tell the mods what to do? That can hardly be called waging a war- acting childish would be a far better phrase.

And I'm not sure what you ment by threads about illegal CD keys. I searched back 4 pages and there wasn't a single thread about it.

Hey, I agree. The word 'war' was too strong, and it made us seem like we wanted to incite anger and fighting. That's not what I wanted...

Those threads might have been deleted recently in light of this thread or others, but the fact remains that there were many.

hey i'm back: anyways, i think it's just hard for us in The Maw because we're used to such a normal & basically mature environment without any flamers and spam, truly, even though we've been recieving quite a bit of spam lately we should be thanking our lucky stars that there aren't really any flamers present in our "small" forum. However though, with this inflow of new people recently asking just for "PC help" and the constant stream of Halo PC technical questions is pissing quite a few people off in The Maw.

Bringing back to mind Recon 54 saying that he thought our forum, containing mature members could take care of itself. But, the thing is, we try and keep our forum clean but we still need the help of mods to lock the bad threads and blacklist the spammers. So the thing was, is that because you guys (the moderators) were never present in our forum, we felt you weren't doing your job because it never seemed that u even came to The Maw. I guess all we really wanted is for u guys (the mods) to answer our thread on this topic (as u have done) to show you are actually there, and paying attention. Because lately we felt you guys were just ignoring our forum.

Yes, the fact that two in three threads deals with tech questions is annoying. Sometimes I want to do stuff other than answer questions like that in The Maw. I like doing it, but it becomes repetitive.

We're just in a confused and changed state, that's all. I'm sure that in a month we'll have our feet planted again, but until then, we're a bit unbalanced and in transition.

Yes. Banana eating monkeys are strange. And wierd. Plus they eat bananas.

In any case, I think a search feature would resolve quite a few things, along with just more involvement. what started this off was a feeling of lack of mod involvement, and an unexplained thread lock. It's kind of grown exponentially, and I admit, I got pissed too, but... If we let it die down a little, and cool off, it might be ok.

What also would relieve a lot of tension is if a mod posted once in a while. The only time I've ever seen mods post in The Maw was Recon's reply to war w/in a breath. A post once a couple days, a response or something like that would ease tension quite a bit also.

War, I admit is a little strong for what's going on here. It's more like... I dunno... a political demonstration? But in any case, there's a summary of what Jman said (I hope).

So you are complaining about posts that are on-topic, not spam and don't break any of the rules that are made by new members?
Anyone else say elitism?
Technical questions regarding the use of Halo PC weren't against any rules last I was aware.
If you all are such a close knit community that doesn't want outside interference, for the love of bob, use common sense. Create a group and restrict membership, you can moderate yourselves and ignore all of that "on-topic rubbish".
The mods have limited time on these forums, a large amount of this goes towards moderating the most active forums as they are the most problematic. They don't have to acknowledge the fact you sent a PM about a problem thread, they get the message, you know that.

#1 - We're not advertising threads, we're referencing them. If we didn't reference them, then everybody would ask us for examples. We've provided them. Kind of like when you write a term paper - you list your references.

#2 - If you call seeking to resolve our issues with the mods spam, then yes, we're spamming to hell and back.

#3 - The title of the thread was originally "War Within A Breath" which is actually a song by Rage Against the Machine (I'm surprised nobody caught it). It was not intended to be a war - it was an allusion - a literary reference - that was not meant to be taken literally. It was intended to address the mods ignoring us and treating us like garbage.

But whatever, whether you think we're all stupid or god's gift to mankind, we've accomplished what we set out to do - that is, get the mods to pay us some attention and dialogue with us. With this, we've figured out exactly how to handle future situations such as this. I don't anticipate that it will come to this again.

Honestly, what the forums become they become, what the mods do the mods will do, we just wanted to ensure that the mods are still with us and looking out for us. Thanks to all the mods who responded in any one of the numerous threads involved in this debacle.
