Do volunteer work and charities, especially through companies like Honeywell.

A positive letter of recommendation from the boss of a division of an important company for charitable volunteer work looks great on a resume.

That's 100% correct. You gotta give a little, to get a little.

I think you're right.

But I'm thinking more along the lines of 'Target' here. That's just overkill.

Edit: Also, that's more helpful for one specific field, or people who even KNOW who the foremost is.

My charity work just proves I'm a hard worker. And if I can impress the boss of someplace like Honeywell, then I'm set.

Yes. Volunteering does look good. But leadership also looks great.

One reason I got my job was because (well not only do I have a 4.5 GPA in the IB program) my employer was impressed with the fact that I went to a hostile part of Mexico (extremely poor) and rebuilt houses. I said it was a rewarding experience, even though it sucked hard, and that really caught they hirers attention. Make sure you hand the interviewer your resume when you go in, even if they don't ask for it. Include that you aren't afraid of working hard and will always show up on time (whether you will or not).
And you can't go underdressed to an interview, no matter the job.

And I want to go to Harvard, so anything and everything look good on your resume.

And I have leadership skills with that letter of rec too!

I lead a group of some 5 middle-aged employees at the age of 17 because he was aware that I am used to working as a team lead.

He was very impressed with my leadership skills.

Plus, I do things like section leader and stage manager for all sorts of events. I have the leadership stuff down.

That is the completly the wrong reason to do charity work. Although i cannot dissagree with the fact that it looks good, i feel that its wrong. You should do this out of your heart, because you want to help the less fortunate. Its like you benifit from the misfortune of others, its not right. But hey we all have our all morals, and some people are evil self absorbered dweebs. Dont get me wrong your doing a good thing, but for the wrong reason. Like finding the cure for aids, to get rich. Im sure a few of you fool find this acceptible. But when your lying on your death bed, and you have nothing but your fancy resume to keep you warm, ill walk by and -blam!- on your head. AHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!! was i too harsh?

Do you have a problem with ambition?

And see the darkness thread. That could explain my response to you -blam!- on my head. I work my ass off for my resume. I do what is necessary to get where I want to go. And in this case, how is it any different than doing your homework to get good grades? The intent is the same thing, but with external (and positive) ramifications.

I have no desire to be a nun, but a rich and powerful capitalist, and eventually absolute dictator of this wretched world.

And yes, I am that ambitious.

Doing things with an eye towards the resume is simply the reality of today. With today's power parents, overachievers, and everyone striving to get into the top colleges', often every step you take must be carefully planned and calculated.

(its no fun, but its the reality of the situation).

Yeah wether or not the outcome is good, Its all in the intent. If i blew up the world trying to save it, well atleast i meant well. Charity work is good, regardless what your doing it for. But maybye you should do charity work for charity. Or to get a job at target, its your choice really.

Someone's gotta stop the cycle of viciousness. Were the next generation, We are the future. Lets make it one where we do good for good, not for self benifit.

Charity really doesn't do much in the macrocostic scheme of things. If we focus on the betterment of mankind as a whole rather than an individuals (or an individual groups) problems, then we can actually achieve progress.
For example- don't give that money to the hobo- send it to the government to fund research oil extraction techniques. We are nearing a dire time without the need of oil (as our infrastructure cannot yet support other fuel sources), however, Canada posesses over a trillion barrels of unexcavated oil. We just don't have the technology to effectively extract it- and add the necessary fillers to meet the rediculous amount of different demands.
For environmental reasons, almost every state has its own type of gas it can recieve, which is a strain on our oil refineries- thus high gas prices.

With the rapid expansion of the worlds population, all of our resources are going to be consumed anyway. We need to put forth all the energies possible to research creating a source of energy that isnt reliant on the earth. Same with all other resources. Or else we need to leave.

These worries of the misery of the few are microcostic to the massive scheme of things. We must put aside our compassion and live with a certain degree of guilt to truly do what needs to be done.

A few of today- or all of tomorrow? Not that hard of a decision. Plan ahead. Thats what this thread is all about. Always focus on your goal and prepare for all possible straights that may come your way.
Sacrifice now is essential for a better tomorrow.
Work is not fun. But it will pay off.
Suffering builds strength.

Eye the future. Never look away, you will miss something.

What if, to play devil's advocate, i said that i did charity work only to boost my resume so i could go to the best college and get that job as the greatest scientist in the world, so then i could invent the ____fill in the blank___ that will save the world. Then, technicallly, in doing charity work, i actually was doing it for the charity?

Well no you did charity for the resume, and as a result you created the amazing ___[u]fill in the balnk[u]___ with all that crazy ___[u]fill in the balnk[u]___ stuff. But you did good. Both times, But the first time it was for the wrong reason.
