No, of course not. Very rarely is something fatal, since the windows 98/p3/really old hard drive days. Back then, I remember losing windows directories due to corrupt startups and bad shutoffs.
Anyway, the OS always keeps an eye for possible errors and stuff and will take the necessary measure to prevent anything even remotely harmful from happening. Of course, the most primitive form is the BSOD when instability occurs, but the runtime errors like the DirectX error you can get are really just XP being very protective.
Anybody here ever use Linux? That doesn't have anything like that, and it's very easy to mess up anything. I think we can all thank M$ for at least making it hard for us to screw up our system :)
