According to Merriam-Webster's online dictionary, firefight means:
1 a: a usually brief intense exchange of fire between opposing military units b: a hostile confrontation that involves gunfire
2: skirmish 2b
This could mean that there is rounds, similar to Forge I presume or any objective game, and you will be able to fight off enemies. Much like the craze that it follows in Left 4 Dead's Survival Mode, Gears of War 2's Horde Mode, and Call of Duty: World at War's -blam!- Zombies. Although the Xbox 360's apparent love for these arena-based bot massacres, I'm unsure if Halo 3 can carry that same finesse that other games happened to present. I'm sure Bungie can do it, I'm sure I'll enjoy it, but the redundancy of the gametype will get old, quick. It doesn't matter though because it's still another strong selling point in most games now-a-days.
The speculated Firefight Mode could be nothing more than part of a speech though. He might been playing that Halo 3: ODST Beta and referenced the gameplay as a "firefight," seeing as how you are with a whole squad of Orbital Drop Shock Troopers fighting Brutes in a war... If there is a Firefight Mode, I'm stoked because I know Bungie will deliver. :-D
Edit: I stand corrected, my second paragraph is flawed.
