Star Trek on the brain, Snakie?

Meh, it seems to be a common theme. But it seems likely- those Spartan numbers were also higher than they should have been, as MLG Cheehwawa pointed out. No Spartan with that high of a number has ever been reported as canonical, and less than that number of potential children were reported in Fall of Reach.

Unless they also made the Spartan's number completely inaccurate, I think this is either an alternate reality, or something in the future.

Does sierra have to mean spartan? It seems like a no-brainer, but theres always the possibility it stands for something else.

I think it's possible -- though not necessarily likely -- that the trailer switching from bright side to dark side was also a way of showing the travel of time; from first contact to the first bombings.

As for the way that Spartans were announced to be on the ground towards the end of the invasino in the trailer rather than the beginning, that was probably for dramatic effect. If you have a problem with that, that's totally fair. Not much one can do about your opinion though.

It's a Teaser Trailer, Halo 2 and Halo 3 didn't play out like the original trailers now did they?
Nope.

I knew that, but they are assuming the S meant spartan. After looking at the trailer again, it probably means spartan because "Sierra XXX" says "we have spartans on the ground."

The Covenant glassed Reach, and I am guessing what all of us saw at the end was the glassing of Reach. So the whole part of armies going to the ground was skipped. The Trailer went from Covenant arriving and to the glassing of Reach.

Actually, thats very likely. As you hear about the orbital perimeter being breached, you see an orbital structure of some sort float ominously by as it vents atmosphere.

Sierra is the common designation for all Spartans in the field. It's not necessarily a Spartan, but a "Sierra" designation followed by numbers is almost always a Spartan designation.

They were announced as jumping below the defensive line in the beginning, however. That's my largest issue. If you look at it with the eye of a theorist, you're going to see the inconsistencies, and most theorists have a very, very keen eye for what happened on Reach. The inconsistencies here just don't seem to add up to a time shift, unless the voice is 100% separate from the video.

Don't get me wrong, I'm going to love it. But I'm a theorist by nature, nit-picking is my thing....

Forgive me for any fallacies, but wasn't the Spartan II project in development before Reach? Maybe they were using Spartan IIs?

I was speaking of Spartan-IIs. Unless otherwise stated, those are the "generic" Spartans. Whenever the designation "Spartan" is used, it's usually referring to a II.

I had an error in my post. I meant Spartan I.

Note to self: Re-read your posts Josh!

We really don't know how many waves of "Spartan-II"s were trained, honestly. I don't remember whether another wave was ever confirmed by the novels, but they did say that they embraced I Love Bees as canon, in which we learn that Yasmine was originally a Spartan-II candidate in a subsequent wave.

Can anyone confirm?

Either way, as others have said, could just be the inconsistencies put together by whoever was in charge of the trailer. Whether in video games or not, trailers always tend to misrepresent the final product in some way or another, though that's usually with the company siphoning off the trailer production to someone else.

The entire Halo universe is "fiction". The novels are confirmed as canonical content.

Dream, for when the dreamers stop dreaming reality will go mute with color and all will fall into a silent blackness.

OP you have no idea when the trailer story started it could be refering to exactly when the fleet got through and it never said that the spartans were heading on ground it said the had been on the ground which will agree with your statement. So, don't nit-pick at something irrelevant considering the Novels are Canon and the actual game is the storyline you should be following. So I could easily say whatever Bungie says in this game is the real story and Nylund will have to get over it. Shut it and have a nice day.

Yes, it was referring to exactly where (I'll assume you meant where and not when, because when is rather unintelligible) the fleet got through, which is below the defensive line, which is not agreeable to canon. Thank you for playing, please try again.

OP's been updated with a bit of new information. I'm trying to get all the inconsistencies and possible explanations mapped. Any further inconsistencies or explanations would be lovely!

How do we know this? As far as I know the only reference to Sierra was with the Chief.

I was a bit taken back by the apparent inconsistencies too, especially after having loved The Fall of Reach so much. My hope too is that it merely a trailer.

The one thing I did love about it, was that it means more Halo. Now I merely hope Bungie is gonna make it feel fresh again. I wasnt disappointed with Halo 3, but it certainly didn't feel and play as well as the previous iterations in my opinion. The additions were amazing however.

Hopefully this will be more of the same but also spice it up.

I also LOVE the font. Its more like the original Halo:CE writing style and makes me feel as though its meant to look a bit older than that too. A sorta nod to the fact that it is a prequel merely in the font. It reminds me of Valve's Left 4 Dead cover featuring a Left Hand, obviously holding up four fingers while also being dead.

The only fact I know is that I will definitely be re-reading Reach soon haha.

Simple military code, Burrito. "Sierra" stands for S, and "S" followed by any 3 numbers is likely pointing to a Spartan. "Sierra-259" is equivalent to "S-259", which would be an abbreviated "Spartan-259."

Oh I completely agree that it's highly likely. In fact, I don't doubt that it does represent Spartans.

I'm just saying... we don't know is all. Could stand for 'Stallion', new (/really old but since Reach was glassed...lost it) high tech vehicle. Who knows?

...But probably Spartans, yes.
:)

The Risk Is Worth The Reward.
Cry Havoc And Let Slip The Dogs Of War.

My guess is that its just hype trailer. Something to get everyone talking about the game.

Well I never said definitely, ye Mexican Dish, I said most likely... or something like that that was almost 100% likely but not really.

Quick as a razor, sharp as a bullet.

You know what? This trailer is very reminiscent of the first Halo 2 teaser. Personally, I am now thinking this trailer wasn't meant to fit into the canon but to remind you of all things Halo.

The lettering is very Halo:Ce like. The planet itself with the detonations is like Halo 2's teaser with Master Chief about to jump out the cargo bay. The mention of Sierra and the addition of the glare is a nod to the Halo 3 Legendary ending.

I like what they did with it even if it doesn't fit the canon completely. Hopefully the actual game will, but for a trailer, it was a nice homage.

There are people that theorize that the portal sent the Chief through time or dimensions to return to Reach, causing an alternate timeline either way. While I personally don't buy it yet, I think it's at least possible. Don't speak too soon, perhaps a mere 3 years after Halo 3's release Halo: Reach will unveil the answers!

I agree that it gives good homage to the series, but I still think that the trailer might have more meaning hidden in it than just an homage to get the blood pumping and the die-hards ready to rock. I hope it does, anyhow.
